A selection of writings from Friedrich Engels. Socialism, Utopian and Scientific; The Principles of Communism; The Part Played by Labour in the Transition From Ape to Man; Ludwig Feuerbach and the end of Classical German Philosophy; and The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State.
I have been a critic of capitalism since 2014. This book contains the basic writings of Frederich Engels. The one that draws me in the most is the one about science. He said that science and nature cannot exist without evolution. An another thing I take from a part of this book is that science is the key to liberation of the working class.
I FINALLY finished this book! It only took 3 months🙃 Engels was a contemporary of Karl Marx and coauthor of The Communist Manifesto. Socialism: Utopian and Scientific was a very interesting read, and I recommend everyone read it. The Principles of Communism was also very good but was written in a different format. It was sort of a Q&A but for communism. Overall, great selection of writing, I enjoyed it, it was a little difficult at times, but not impossible. I think it’s important to think about class consciousness, how capitalism operates and it’s harms, and alternatives to the current social order.
As billed, the Red and Black edition of Engels features the indispensable works - "Socialism: Utopian and Scientific" and "Origins of the Family" along with the primer-like "Principles of Communism," and an essay on Ludwig Feuerbach which traces the analytical trajectory from Hegel to Marx. Engels affirms repeatedly that German philosophy in particular provides tools for a rigorous analysis of how societies develop, fall, and rise.
