"Sometimes people just need a little bit of luck to come their way. To make them see what's possible. To give them a bit of hope, so that they have the power to change their situation."

I loved Helen Rutter's previous book 'The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh', and I loved this one too, about a boy who thinks he's useless at everything but finds the possibility to change his perspective via his being given nine wishes.

It’s a great book. This story is about a boy who was lonely, brave and positive. He had a lot of problems with his family, he tried to fix them by himself. With the help of a fantastic opportunity and a marvelous friend they reunited his family.

Archie Crumb is not good at anything and his life consists of looking after himself and feeling that he doesn’t fit in.
That is until he finds himself with nine wishes that could change his life!

Helen Rutter isn’t afraid to write about the harsh realities of life. This book takes a hard and honest look at the life some children experience when their parent/carer has depression. The daily struggles to provide for themselves at a young age and the feelings and emotions that go with it. Archie’s mum doesn’t get out of bed, she won’t talk to anyone and is clear that he mustn’t tell anyone.
Archie is left to fend for himself, not easy when the B-B gang are constantly teasing him, his own dad and step mum don’t want him around and he isn’t good at anything.

The one thing Archie clings to are his football stickers - most importantly the Lucas Bailey ones. Lucas Bailey is a local boy who turned things around to become a star. Could he be the key to Archie turning his life around?

When Archie suspects that his wishes are actually coming true he enlists the help of his best friend Mouse. He knows he can’t change people and he has to be clever - but what do you wish for to make you happy? As Archie makes his wishes (not always making the best decisions) he starts to realise that maybe he can change his own life. We all need hope and without hope nothing will happen.

This is another funny yet heartfelt book from Helen Rutter. Highlighting the importance of asking for help when we need it and the life of young carers.

A must read book ideal for year 6 up.

he Boy Whose Wishes Came True is a gorgeous story of Archie Crumb by author Helen Rutter.

Archie is an eleven year old who lives alone with his mother. His mother has become very sad since Archie's father left home, remarried and now has another child. She spends most of her days upstairs in bed, crying. Although Archie visits his dad every other weekend and adores his baby sister he doesn't feel like he belongs to this new blended family. And home is not really home anymore with his mother locked in her room and Archie having to fend for himself.

Archie tries his best to keep going but he wishes he could find something that he is good at; everyone around him seems to have a special talent. Then one day Archie bumps into his football hero who grants Archie nine wishes. This comical part of the novel find Archie in a few predicaments as his wishes don't always turn out like he had hoped.

This was such a heartwarming read. Archie's life is far from perfect but with the support from his one true friend Mouse, Archie discovers that in order to achieve you must believe. I got caught up in the character of Archie Crumb and felt everyone of his emotions as he journeyed on through the book. A must read for children aged 8+. Expect laughs, perhaps a few tears (only if you are soft like me) but above all a truly memorising book about a realistic and likeable character who faces many challenges in his young life with grit and determination.

I adored this book, a 5 star read from me.

This book is the story of Archie Crumb, who feels his luck has run out. School is tough, he doesn’t have many friends and is always the last chosen on teams, he has a difficult home life, his mom often in bed feeling unwell. He has had to fend for himself pretty much since his dad left. One day after a fall, he sees stars and his favourite footballer appears before him, granting him 9 wishes. Archie thinks of all the ice-cream, X-box, football cards he will get with his wishes, he will literally wish his way to happiness. But will he learn that only he has the power to change his life, that things, no matter how amazing, won’t ultimately bring him true happiness? And how can he harness this power?

This book is a delight. Again I read it with a group of 9-10 year olds who also really liked it. Archie Crumb is a great character. He really has it tough but doesn’t give up. He is resilient and has a strong spirit that makes him keep going, aspiring for a better life, and has a softness too that makes us root for him. He has only love for his mom and the book doesn’t shy away from the mom’s mental illness and the impact of this on Archie who becomes her caregiver. There is sadness in this book but lots of humour too. As Archie digs deep, he finds resources within himself he didn’t know he had and what began as quite a bleak life, becomes filled with hope, potential, possibility.

Thank you to Scholastic children’s publishing for an early copy of this book. I took it home to read and my little girl (just 11) started bouncing up and down when she saw it. She’s a picky reader but absolutely loved Helen’s first book and has promised to read the copy very carefully over the weekend so I can return it to school! (Honestly, this is high praise in itself!)

What a great story, as with her first book, (The Boy who Made Everyone Laugh TBWMEL) it tackles tricky issues with gentle wit and humour and isn’t afraid to point out injustice. It’s written once again from a child’s perspective which keeps the story light hearted and accessible.

This time, the book is about a little boy called Archie Crumb, who is living a ‘small’ and hard life. His parents have split up, his Mum is depressed and unable to look after him and his Dad and new family are (not purposely) pushing Archie away from their ‘perfect’ normal family.

Archie is a massive football fan and when he falls and bumps his head he (hallucinates?) his favourite player giving him 9 wishes. He can’t wish for people to change on the inside but he can have fun with his best friend Mouse changing his world in small ways.

As per TBWMEL it isn’t just what is going on around him that Archie needs to change, it’s also how he deals with it, which is obviously a massive part of growing up.

There are plenty of students I can recommend this too, particularly those who like funny books with footballers. I am sure it will be a great hit!

I have to ask if the famous footballer, Lucas Bailey is modelled upon Marcus Rashford? I could be totally wrong, bear in mind that I don’t really ‘do’ football but I did wonder!

This book raises the issues of loneliness and diffidence which are really acute, especially when it comes to teenagers. I really like the straightforward way how some valuable ideas have been formulated: that you don’t have to deal with everything on your own and it’s OK to ask for help; that you may be horrible at something but telling yourself this again and again just makes it only worse and leaves no room for improvement, etc. It’s a nice, heart-warming book about an ordinary boy right in the middle of the family crisis. A pinch of magic makes it similar to the fairytale therapy, in my opinion.
As a person who is seeking for logics and realistic characters even in fantasy books, I must admit that this book is pretty much unbelievable at times (I mean, the way people change their behavior and attitude for no clear reason). Anyway, it’s not the point here; you just kind of let it go this way.
This book simply has to be made into a film! While reading, I could imagine all the events so easily, as if I’d already seen the film. I think, it's because the book doesn't have many descriptions and looks a bit like a film scenario. I’d love to see it on the screen!

this is a nice read. i brought it along with me to work yesterday and as i was reading it, during my lunch break *wink wink*, there was a part in the book that made my heart ache. it was when he used a wish for his little sister. he wanted to make her happy on her birthday, the happiest girl ever. and he did, all the while enduring the pain of everything he was going through. archie needed love and to be taken cared of, and not having those things did not make him angry and bitter, he still had a good and genuine heart, albeit full of sadness. i loved mouse and everyone who looked after him. i loved the ending. it was perfect. it's simply written, no cringey parts, and NO LOVE INTEREST which i v much appreciate. i think kids and parents, especially those who have separated, everywhere should read this. it'll help them look at life differently. i love this. i hope it gets a netflix adaptation. probably one of the best 50 pesos purchases in my life. thank you booksale for hooking me up with this! lmao

This was a great story about a young football fan, Archie, who meets his hero, Lucas Bailey. Lucas tells him he can have 9 wishes. Archie doesn't believe it, but inadvertently makes a wish, which comes true! Then follows a series of wishes, some funny, some leading to adventures with his friends.
This exciting story has a more serious background as Archie's Mum has serious depression and he has to fend for himself. It also contains bullying at school.
This is a great read - even better than Helen Rutter's first book "The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh". I recommend that you read both.
I read it in one big gulp!

Really good for upper Key Stage 2. Funny and heartwarming but also sad and stark in places. Important for children to see that not everyone has a lovely secure home life. Really positive messages throughout.
