[#342 Siren Everlasting Classic Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, werewolves] Maverick Brac has formed a pack of his own, naming them the Brac Pack. With fourteen men under him, they all have one thing in common, the preference for men. Cecil Walter was living a life no one would wish on their enemy in an abusive relationship with his partner with no way out. Getting away from pack problems and a migraine, Maverick indulges in his one secret love, Chai tea. While in the coffee shop trying to forget the world outside exists for five minutes, Maverick has found what he never thought to have, his mate, his very human mate. Rescuing Cecil from his abusive boyfriend to finding out who in his pack is trying to take Cecil's life, Maverick has his work cut out for him, but the largest challenge is getting Cecil to come out of his shell and be the man he once was. ** Each book in Lynn Hagen's Brac Pack collection features a different romantic couple. Each title stands alone and can be read in any order. However, we recommend reading the series in sequential order. ** A Siren Erotic Romance
Lynn Hagen loves writing about the somewhat flawed, but lovable. She also loves a hero who can see past all the rough edges to find the shining diamond of a beautiful heart.
You can find her on any given day curled up with her laptop and a cup of hot java, letting the next set of characters tell their story.
Gods damn it. I had a lovely review that clearly delineated my multitude of problems with this "book" and I lost it. Excuse me while I break something.
Ok, short version then. Avoid at all costs. The plot was thin-to-non-existent, the characters were flatter than my singing voice, the conflict was cringe-worthy, the sex was either highly disturbing or laughable (often both), the pairings made me very uncomfortable, the writing made me want to cry and take a large red marker to fix all the mistakes, and I cannot, for the life of me, fathom how this got published.
When the main character (I refuse to call him a hero) stalks a stranger to his home, puts him in a trance, then fucks him and drinks his blood to "mark him" (ostensibly for his own safety), that's not sexy. That's rape. When the guy is not conscious and did not give consent for that little backdoor visit, it's rape. When you leave him with no knowledge of the act, even if he was turned on while he was asleep, that's rape.
And when another character is mentally impaired, do not keep calling him retarded. We are not in grade school and there are much kinder terms to call him. When a 200+ year old wolf shifter decides that 18 year old impaired person is his destined mate, I get all kinds of red flags. And guess what? They're all centered around that consent issue again.
This read like bad fanfic written by a teenager with no concept of proper writing skills or what is and is not sexy. I can't even go into all the fails as far as character development, motivations, growth, conflict, continuity, none of it. There simply weren't any. Why did I keep reading? I honestly don't know. I can only say in my defense that this was so bad I was only waiting to see how much worse it could get. I can only pray Amazon gives me my damn money back.
I cannot begin to describe how bad this book is. Maverick is an A$$hole for at least the first half of the book and not much better for the second half. The first chapter has him hypnotizing his mate and fucking him/biting him without his consent and without him knowing (while he is asleep).
(this begs the question of how Cecil couldnt feel that he had got bitten and reamed out the night before but apparently he felt no twinges the next day)
I have to say Cecil is the most bazaar name I have read in ages. Dont get me wrong it was my Grandads middle name and I think it was popular in the 1920s. But it just didnt fit the story.
After you get over the tragedy of his name I am sorry to say Cecil never really grows on you, one minute he cries the next hes strong, one minute he is getting bashed by ex human boyfriend the next SECOND and I mean right then and there he agrees to mate with Maverick a 6ft 9" scary looking werewolf.
Seems like a great idea huh....I really felt like Cecil might be bipolar.
The ending (which I am amazed I even got to) was the worst part of the whole novel. The house full of scary assed werewolves all cry...yup...cry over Cecil getting injured.
This is one of those books that makes me think...how did it get published??? Then I find out there is 11 in the series and I become SPEECHLESS....who knows - maybe the author gets better, but to tell you the gods honest truth. I am to scared to read another one.

Prett soon I'm going to stop buying any books put out by Siren Publishing because they seem to all be cut from the same cookie cutter. This book's plotline was signature Stormy Glenn and Joyee Flynn if I've ever read any books of theirs(and I have, around 30 total). It's like they write for straight profit and not pleasure.
After careful consideration, I have edited this review. I believe the author has strong promise to become better, but this book (and I blame the publisher as well, for lack of editorial vigilance) could have been much, much better. The author is free to contact me privately for my reasons why I thought the book could have been a better product. I tend to shoot from the hip rather than carefully consider my actions, so in that respect, after some time to think, my review was indeed harsh and should be removed. I apologize. Still, it does bother me that quantity over quality seems to be the norm in many areas for this genre' and when I see promising talent flung aside for such a reason, it is a peeve of mine and I *DO* speak out.

This is one of the worst books I've read this year: plot non-existent, characters not well developed, poor editing. In the first chapter Maverick hypnotizes his mate and claims him while the other man is sleeping... mate or not, this scene is really disturbing!
Okay! Before all my friends start throwing rotten fruits and vegetables at me, hear me out, okay?! ROFL.
This story wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I mean, it takes some serious, and I do mean serious, shit to make me hate a book enough to give it less than three stars and to be completely honest, it wasn't so bad. There's one word to describe this book and it's fluff.
My best advice to anyone looking to read this one is to not expect much. If you're looking to read something with an extravagant plot, with the best characterization and dialogue, you might want to look somewhere else because you won't find it here and that's exactly why I liked this book. After reading big time, long angsty books for the past week or so, I needed a break from anything even remotely connected to realism. Maverick's Mate gave me exactly what I wanted and was looking for.
It was fast-paced to the point that everything kind of seems rushed with an abrupt, over-before-you-know-it, ending. You have the expected 'You are mine!' overly, large alpha werewolf, Maverick, and the 'Please don't abuse me like my ex-boyfriend did!' smaller, and much more human mate, Cecil. We only get the barest hint of their personalities but from the start Cecil puts life into Maverick's pack, lightening up the atmosphere in the house. I found it enjoyable. It was a quick read that gave me everything I expected and predicted of it.
The only things that rubbed me the wrong way was the beginning and how much sex there was.
All in all, not everyone is going to like this one especially if you put some high expectations on it. If you're looking to take a break from the long books that make you actually have to think about the plot or make you cry, or wanna cry, then I think this would be a good book to read. Just don't expect anything from it. If you're looking to read something with substance then skip this one because you won't find it in this book.
Oh, and in no way is this book bubbles-safe (although I think the rest of the series is). The beginning will most likely put so many people off this series it's not even funny but I've heard they get slightly better. Just... give it a shot. :D
The one star is generous...This was pretty bad and I can be pretty forgiving of poor editing, strange plot twists, etc., but this went beyond that and into the realm of - formulaic plot, forgettable characters, bad dialogue and the list goes on...
This was so bad I actually bought the 2nd book in the series because I thought it was a fluke...the 2nd book had to be better...give the author a chance...maybe it was just 1st book inexperience.
Ha...what a joke that one made my eyes bleed - it was even worse that the 1st one and contained main chgaraters with the nicknames of Pretty Baby and Daddy...just think of my dismay when I realized there are 19 books in this series...
So, this was...interesting. Unrealistic characters reactions (who sleeps with a dude in their dream, realizes he's REAL, agrees to bind himself to him, and then freaks out when said dream lover wants him to move in because that's a step too far?), unexplained insta-love, terrible leadership, terrible "guards." Cody's and Cecil's relationship was cute, though.
Someone tries to kill Cecil and Maverick suspects it's someone on the inside, but does absolutely NO investigating. He just keeps asking himself how it could be happening, lol
As much as I shit on this book, it's not absolutely terrible. The storyline has potential.
This was a short quick read that was the first book in a new series too me. Maverick Brac is a 300 year old wolf-shifter who formed his pack. Maverick's life has gotten boring. Cecil Walter is living in his worse nightmare he is in an abusive relationship that he doesn't know how to get out of. When Maverick goes to a café to get Chai tea he smells his mate when he looks around he sees Cecil he follows him home Cecil thinks that he dreamed the sex that he had with Maverick. When he goes to his boyfriend Jeremy house he knows that he is in trouble he is late and when he sees the mark on his neck Jeremy flips out I hated him bullying Cecil. Cody one of Maverick's warriors stops Jeremy from hitting Cecil. When Maverick takes Cecil back to his apartment he tells him about being his mate and about him being a wolf-shifter at first Cecil doesn't believe him he doesn't want to go from one controlling relationship to the next but he agrees to be his mate. This was a good read Cecil didn't want Maverick to spend a lot of money on him when he went shopping with Cody to buy a gaming system. When Cecil gets sick they find out that someone poisoned him and then he was beaten and kidnapped turns out Maverick's assistant was in love with him. The sex scenes in this book were good. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am glad I bought a bundle with the first four books of this series. I can't wait to read the next book.
I was really set on liking this entire series. 33 books, oh yeah! But I can’t do it.
I have no idea why the author thinks RAPE is okay. And yes, I do consider it rape when wolf shifter, Maverick, has sex with Cecil while Cecil is asleep. They haven’t met, but Maverick knows Cecil is his mate. He follows him to his home and has sex with Cecil while he is asleep.
I have no idea why this scene was even included because it’s not important to the story at all.
And Cecil, who has been in an abusive relationship for the past 2 years, just lets Maverick yell at him and act like an abusive partner himself. All because he wants to protect Cecil. Protect him, my ass!
“You will never turn your back on me when I am speaking to you, do you understand? You will take what I offer without complaint. I will not tolerate this behavior from my mate.”
I had to work on a mind numbing project for work so I wanted something to listen to that didn't require a whole lot of brain power on my part. Maverick's Mate fit the bill there. It follows all the clichés of this trope to a "T" with a healthy side of cheese.
That being said I did have a hell of a fun time listening to it once I embraced the cheesiness. I liked it for the same reason I LOVE SHARKNADO. Not that this was SHARKNADO level awesome, nothing can be, but I have to respect something that embraces its trope and goes with it. Go. Man. Go.
I liked the narrators voice when he was just narrating or doing just a "regular" guy character. But I snickered ridiculously when he did the alpha voices. And there are a lot of alpha voices. He sounded very Shatner-esque as he Spoke. In his very. Deep. And Commanding. Alpha voice. Those are Shatner-esque pauses there, just FYI.
Cecil was your basic damsel in distress, Maverick was, more often that not, an asshole and the villain was an idiot. Dude, you had two prime chances to off Cecil and you failed. Both times. Miserably. Idiot. He was too busy twirling his mustache (in my head) and monologuing to do his one job.
But, by the end I was doing the same stupid shit I do when I watch SHARKNADO, grinning like an idiot and cheering on the cheese.
Maverick: I want every wolf to bear up - grrrrrrr Me: Yeah, bear up! (wait, what? bears?)
Maverick gets after Villian: . . . with his other hand he ripped his claws across the wide eyed traitor's chest, blood instantly blossomed across his torn sweater vest - grrrrrrr Me: Yeah, rip those claws! (wait, sweater vest? heh heh heh)
Maverick at Villian: He growled, warning him not to breach the formation - grrrrrr Me: Yeah, just try and breach it bitch! (he said breach *snicker*)
Maverick: I will not tolerate betrayal among my own pack - grrrrrrr Me: Yeah, show 'em who's alpha! - grrrrrrr
Maverick: Just dump his carcass far enough away . . . Me: Yeah, dump that carcass!
Maverick after dispensing with the Villian and ordering the carcass dumping: Maverick stormed into the house (FYI, Maverick doesn't just walk anywhere, he storms and thunders and stomps and whatnot) getting straight into the shower to wash away the stench that clung to his skin. Me: Yeah, clingy stench! (ewwwww)
So, that was super fun, I enjoy doing that muchly. Embrace it for what it is and enjoy!
Segunda lectura: Agosto 2017 Simplemente no tengo suficiente de estos libros. Los personajes me encantan, la historia me entretiene mucho y a pesar de ser cortos, me tienen pegada de principio a fin.
So essentially this book is what you get when you try to reduce what might have been a good 100k+ word book into a <30k word book, a rushed disconnected mess. It's like all these scenarios were tossed in just to add drama, but it was all magically fixed within a chapter or just glossed over. You have abusive ex-boyfriend (who appears just once after the confrontation), you have a rape (glossed over), ripping human out of normal life (he adjusts within a chapter), running away (glossed over), and injuries from a murder attempt (fixed within a chapter), and more injuries from a kidnapping (fixed within a chapter). As for Cecil, the character development was off - he starts out as abuse victim scared of being hit and unable to trust who jumps into bed at the first opportunity and within a month he's the vibrant life of the house, kept man, and sex kitten. You just don't 'get over' stuff that fast. Plus for such a short book there was like 5 sex scenes, all very mechanical and unemotional imho.
I was surprised at just how disappointing this one was.

typical lynn hagen serial romance. nothing fantastic, nothing so bad it can't be finished. what is typical lynn hagen? imagine a shorter harlequin romance but with no t&a (see, i was going to write no surprise pregnancies, but... yeah.).
out of sheer laziness, i will be using this as my template for all books by : lynn hagen stormy glenn scarlett hyacinth carol lynne gabrielle evans
unless otherwise noted. i'd apologize, but i'm not sorry. i figure it's about as much time as they put into their books. dammit! well, i made it all the way to the end being rather moderate in my assessment. that's a win.
This was a little too superficial for my liking. The mate claiming was very quick and Cecil accepted it almost without question. The story got a little better in the second half...and I'll still continue the next books.
This is more a statement on the whole series than this one book.
The reason I keep giving this series mostly 2s:
1) Plot inconsistencies. Huge, gaping ones that you could sale a catamaran through. This is probably what drives me craziest because they're so blatant.
2) Things that are never explained. For example, it works one way for all the members of a species but a totally different way for the one member living in Maverick's house. Why?!!? I get the feeling the author wants the characters to live in the Den and get along and if there's something that makes that impossible or difficult and she can't explain it reasonably in the book, she just ignores it.
3) A very bad sense of time. The whole series feels like it happened in a matter of weeks and months. Every once in a while the author mentions that years have gone by. You totally don't get the feeling of time passing at all from the books.
4) Most of the time it feels like the author's working backwards. She's come up with what she wants to happen in the end, and then she has to figure out how to get her characters there. I get the feeling that this is why there are often plot inconsistencies and things that just outright don't make any sense.
5) Bad editing. I can't forget a "blew a tuft of air"...
The reasons I read this series:
1) Despite the things that make me crazy about the series, there are some characters that I really liked. Mostly because of their personal quirks. A good example is Nero, Gabby or Alex. The characters are likable and interesting, even if they don't always make sense.
2) There's a plot that runs through the entire series. It moves at a SNAIL'S PACE!!!!!! But it's interesting enough that I want to see how it gets resolved. Probably somewhere around book 70 or 80 of the series.
One last critique, but I doubt that author has much control over this. The covers: Why don't the covers reflect the characters? Gabby in Montana's Vamp is supposed to be pudgy. The cover's got a really cut, muscular redhead on it. I WANT to see a pudgy Gabby on the cover! That's not the only cover guilty of completely misrepresenting the characters, but the publisher could at least make an effort. I like characters with flaws and quirks.
“Maverick’s Mate” is the first installment of the author’s Brac Pack serial. Each “book” is really more of a novella. The writing is low quality and the installments are overpriced. I don’t recommend.
It’s just entirely skipping events. These sorts of things are irritating because they destroy the plot. Points of impact are skipped entirely. These are what would have made interesting scenes or plot elements.
Instead the only thing that saves this loose array of crap from being offensive is its stupid amateurishness. Otherwise I would take great exception at the rape and the lack of sexual safety. Seriously though, these things are more stupid here than annoying because they line up with a myriad of utterly stupid scenes. I can’t even begin!
The ending is the biggest joke of all. I sit here and just go what is this I don’t even…
But of course I will continue with this long, long series. After all, series have gotten better with practise before, so we shall see.
2012 Re-read Project:
I went and did it. I re-read all the connected series by Lynn Hagen, this time in order of publication date, as recommended, which sadly does not ensure actual chronologicality. That’s twenty-nine books of moderate length, spanning three series (with more to spin off).
I’ll put my thoughts in spoiler tags since I plan to paste this into the end of each review covered here. There are no actual spoilers, so feel free to read this for a general idea of the series.
If you’re wondering whether or not you should read… THE ANSWER IS YES‼️‼️

This was the first book of the Brac Pack series I read and so I was pretty much a blank slate back then. I doubt that I would read it again since it wasn't really interesting. Furthermore I already thought back then that the whole mate-warrior relationship is rather romanticized and Maverick's attitude towards mates rather abusive (demanding his mate to be standing next to him and be silent), which makes me think how the average mate is actually treated in this universe. Sure it was stated that they are cherished and fiercely protected (time and again in the series) but on average it seems rather like being in a golden (or not so golden) cage then being an actual partner for life. So I don't really get what is so great. Especially since it was obvious that these "wolves" are rather common chimps or human. There is barely any wolf in them and they act like stereotypes of wolves not actual wolves, not to mention that the Alpha (a stereotype) has to be the biggest and "strongest" (also a stereotype). Would they ever meet an actual wolf of human intellect, they would be in for the shock of their lives. And what is with the biting stuff (also a stereotype and a definitely false one)? In so many stories of gay shapeshifters there is always this biting stuff and Alpha and Omega cliché. Why? So overall: not a good story.
This is what my mother calls a vegetable book. When you don't really want to think about anything, just escape with something easy, and fun. You don't go in expecting literary genius. Just escapism. If you came to this book, expecting an amazing plot, with twists and turns and depth, you came to the wrong spot. If you came to escape the world with a fun little fluff, that doesn't make you examine anything...then you might enjoy it.
I'm not going to repeat what I already wrote while reading the book. However I'm going to add thatthe fact that Maverick rape Cecil and it's doesn't seems to bother him and add to that that it's never mentioned again, it's not something that I can accept in a personage.
No terminé de leerlo. Me encantan los libros de cambia-formas, pero este estuvo super aburrido!! Historia aburrida y personajes aún más aburridos. Sentí todo muy forzado. Esa autora nunca me convence.
Un libro muy interesante. Reconozco que me he leído todos, varias veces. Está muy bien escrito y es de lectura fácil. Un libro cargado de romanticismo, erotismo, celos, adaptación y superación
Keeping in mind that this series was started over 10 years ago when MM was just a baby and had very little support in the world of written word... this could have been worse! *grin*
Yes, it had POV's all over the place and dang was the storyline choppy, but it got the job done! I was entertained and I have a fairly clear picture in my head of the upcoming MC alphas, so I look forward to moving quickly through this series! ;D
