I've lived six lives in one and it all shows up in the books I write, one way or another.

I was always a risk taker and broke mustangs at thirteen years old in Oregon. I learn to break them with love, not threat or pain.

At 17 years old, I picked night-crawlers (worms) out in our Oregon orchards from 9pm to midnight, every night. I earned enough money to buy my school clothes and book. I also plunked down $600 to a flight company at the Medford, Oregon airport and asked them to teach me...a girl...to fly. I soloed in 12 hours, which is average. From that time until I left for the US Navy at 18, I had accrued 39 hours of flight time in my Cessna 150 single engine airplane.

I was in the US military and was an AG3 (weather forecaster). There was no airplane club, so I couldn't fly when I was in the Navy. But I could look at the clouds in the sky ;-).

Later, I flew in a B-52 bomber for a day and night mission (18 hours total), a T-38 Talon jet, USAF, where I was riding in a "chase plane" on a test flight in a Dragonfly jet.

I was one of the first AFLA (American Fencing League of America) women fencers to fence with epee and sabre. These weapons were closed to women because they were too 'heavy' for a female to handle. I said baloney and fought the males and won half my bouts. I was part of a surge of women fencers on the East Coast in the 1970's to push for equality in the sport. Together, we changed the sport and changed the mind of the men. Today? In the Olympics? Women now fence in foil, epee and sabre, thanks to what we did as a vanguard showing the world it could be done.

I then became a volunteer firefighter when I was a civilian once more, the first woman in an all - male fire department in West Point, Ohio for three years. I became a local expert not only in firefighting, driving the engine and tanker trunks, but also had training in hazardous material (Reynoldsburg Fire Academy, Columbus, OH).

My books always reflect what I experienced. If you like edgy, gritty, deeply and emotionally intense love stories with sympathetic heroes and heroines, check out my newest series that will be available mid-Oct. 2015, and it incorporates much of what I have lived.

Buckle up, this is a lllooonnnngggg review.

Okay, well…it started off promising enough. An abused woman fights for her life and gets away from her abusive high ranking drug cartel husband in Miami. Her recovery and his trial that lands him in jail is all super glossed over (read: mentioned in passing later in the book). So is how Susan/Rachel and her mother end up in witness protection, how they ended up in separately, and exactly why the authorities weren’t overly concerned about the brothers, who decided not to leave their lives. Just gloss over that. No problem. We don’t need to know. We might LIKE to know though.

Rachel/Susan ends up in Jackson Hole, a cold place that apparently has a growing season less then 5 months…so kinda like home. Fair enough. She arrives Christmas Day, gets a job Christmas day…everything conveniently happens Christmas Day. Cade becomes guardian of Jenny after her mother dies, her father dying just 6 months before, Rachel is instantly hired moments after the incident, she gets a place to stay that wasn't where she planned to, etc. The grandparents don’t protest in the slightest and you never hear anything about them save Cade contacting them about needing to arrange a funeral for their daughter. All very very weird.

I would say if you adopted a child, raised that child, watched that child get married, bury a partner, have a child, then pass in a crazy accident, you’d at least care enough to call occasionally inquiring about the child’s wellfare and requesting a visit when the weather gets nicer. Five month span and there’s nothing. But I’m crazy?

I know I sound like I’m nitpicking, but these things bothered me and it wasn’t just one or two that I could ignore, it was a book full. So continuing, where did Rachel/Susan's stuff end up at? the FBI say they are packing and sending it....and you never hear about the apartment worth of stuff again. The near instant love thing from Cade was annoying, but at least he kept that under wraps because the author recognized that mutual confessions of insta-love are not an acceptable thing…at least to me. Instead there is a five month dance between the two where literally nothing happens in the book other then the dance and occasionally bouts of Payson’s point of view just to remind the reader he’s out there and sorta trying to find Susan/Rachel.

Cause honestly, if you think about it, if you escaped prison and could go anywhere cause you had all the money, wouldn’t you just leave the country? And if he was so set on revenge (premises of this book), he could have A) hired a hitman or B) have had her a lot sooner if he had been smart and just paid the hacker to actually hack in the first place rather than do surveillance on the brothers (I'm frugal). Which he would have known not to bother with because witness protection means zero communication with anyone from your past life according to all the limited knowledge I have about witness protection. I mean, come on.

Speaking of stupid. Why did no one on the ranch think for a second that someone could easily walk or ride onto the ranch from any location? They only assumed someone would drive in…and drive in through the gate. How you move your cattle about dudes? Horses? Yeah…two and two. Put two and two together. Four, not three! Ahem. So, they put an alarm on the gate and thought “Perfect!” and have a part time security person drive up and down the driveway every hour then knock on the door…you know what would be more effective and less costly in the long run? An alarm system hooked up to all the doors and windows of the house. This book was written in 2010. Alarms have been a thing for years, decades even. You could even get a cheap one that just hooks into your phone to let you know if there is a security breach. Good thing Cade has his gut!!! Same thing apparently…

Susan/Rachel is an abused woman. She repeatedly says she sees Cade as an intense and powerful man, yet not once does she think he would hurt her. During the love scene she’s not hesitant in the slightest. Maybe it’s just me, but I would think someone who was attacked so badly by the only man she ever had experience with would be slightly more gun shy. Susan/Rachel doesn’t flinch or hesitate once. She repeatedly says he is the opposite of Payson in every way, and I mean repeatedly.

Okay, so another thing that annoyed me a bit that I was originally going to leave out was the author repeating the same thing over and over and over again in practically the same words. If you are going to bash me over the head with something, I humbly request you change up the delivery. I get Cade is the opposite of Susan/Rachel’s husband. I GOT IT!!! I lost track after 5 times the author says this. This thought directly attaches to my thoughts that toward the end of the book the author may have pieced together several different drafts and said SCREW IT, I'M DONE! I found tons of overlap in certain areas in regard to the fall out of Rachel/Susan confessing to Cade and conversations after that. It was almost like a book stutter…if that’s a thing.

Phrases/events I couldn’t handle:

Her words were like sunlight flooding into his entire being - Do boys think things like that?

Cade deposited her on the bed. - This just made me laugh because I automatically thought of a bank transaction and then envisioned him just lobbing her onto the bed and her giving a little bounce. Yeah, I’m mature like that.

Next sentence from the one above…
The beautiful quilt over the top had been an heirloom from his great-grandmother. It was old, well-worn, much loved, and she absorbed the love that had gone into its making. - Uh…what?

she was built to have children - Now that is a manly thought to have if you are a man obsessed with having prodigy. I instantly was reminded of a book I read set in the 1800’s where a guy was assessing a girl that could be his potential wife when arranging an arranged marriage for personal gain.

Finding you was me finding myself. - Do people actually talk like this? Am I the weird one?

This sequence of events…
96% of the way through the book - first love confession
96.4% of the way through the book - first love making encounter
98.3% of the way through the book - declaration of wanting to get married.
99.3% of the way through the book – it’s May, he wants a June wedding

Other Randoms:
It’s cute that Rachel/Susan thinks 2 or 3 kids is a large family. I know several people with 6+ kids. When you need a small bus to transport your family from point a to point b, that’s a large family. Not a big thing. It gave me a laugh.

BAM!!! Moral of the story fully declared in the last paragraph as blatantly as can be. Live life to the fullest and be grateful for every day you get to have. Uh, thanks. I totally would have missed that (sarcasm).

Summary

The long and short of this was this:
This books was peppered with so many things that bothered me, I actually skipped some to shorten this review. I was disappointed with the rapid fire events that started cascading at 95.8% of the way through the book. I disliked that climax being pushed back to 78% of the way through the book. It was 78% of the author filling the time line without anything actually happening. There was very little suspense building till 78%.

BUT I did appreciate the author’s attempt to prolong the romantic feeling build up despite the two main character basically being instantly attracted to each other. 5 months of almost constantly being in each other presence and working together to better the life of an infant is plausible enough not to annoy me.

Susan was married to Dirk Payson, who was an abusive drug kingpin. He beat her so severely she lost their baby. He was caught, she testified, and now he is in prison. Susan is put into witness protection, as well as her mother, as Dirk had threatened to kill them. When Dirk escapes from prison, Susan is relocated and given the identity of Rachel Carson.

She winds up in Wyoming, and comes across a car accident in which a woman is killed. Lucky for Rachel, the woman had a baby and guardianship is given to Sheriff Cade Garner. He offers Rachel a nanny position on the spot. She basically winds up moving in with him and doing all the housework, cooking and caring for baby. Lucky for Rachel, that's all she has ever wanted out of life. But how long until Dirk tracks her down to threaten her happiness?

Well, duh, not until the end of the book because otherwise we wouldn't have one! And, boy, is it one tough slog to get there! This is one of the most flat, boring and repetitive books I have ever read in my life. McKenna's writing reminds of what I find in a book by Marie Ferrarella or Linda O Johnson: all telling, no showing; zero tension; and zero spark to the proceedings. Rachel and Cade come with the standard haunted pasts (Rachel's abusive marriage, the loss of Cade's wife and daughter), but they still feel like cardboard cutouts. They have the most boring, inane conversations imaginable.

Absolutely everything here is just so repetitive and banal. Rachel and Cade talk about boring things. Rachel's chest will flush with warmth. She will comment on how masculine and handsome Cade is in his sheriff's uniform with the holster. She will feel guilty about lying to him and his parents about being in the witness protection program. Cade is such an ill-defined character that Rachel is frequently left wondering why he's avoiding her all of a sudden and whether he is upset at her about something. I wasn't feeling a single thing between these two!

The suspense is dead in the water. Dirk has to hang around in the shadows while we spend an eternity with Rachel and Cade going, "I like him/her but I'm too afraid to make a move because it might be inappropriate!" It goes on and on and on like this. It's endless. Once he finally makes his move, I didn't really care anymore. None of these characters felt like real people and I was completely indifferent to what happened to them. I was able to skip chunks of this and not miss anything (e.g. Rachel going to the quilting club and learning gossip about people that has zero bearing on the plot and is never mentioned again.)

Seriously, this was the absolute pits. Making things worse is the fact it's not a category romance. It was a proper book, that, back in 2010, cost $15 to buy new. I got it for $2 bucks in an op shop and even that was probably paying too much for lifeless, boring storytelling such as this.

Mungkin lebih berasa emosinya jika diceritakan dari sudut pandang Rachel dari pertama bertemu Dirk, pernikahan yang ditentang keluarga, abuse, kehilangan bayi, Dirk dipenjara & kabur, masuk perlindungan saksi, begitu pula Cade yg kehilangan istri & anak karena kecelakaan sehingga di satu titik mereka bertemu. Jadi tidak terlalu panjang lebar menceritakan rasa tertarik jg kekaguman fisik. Padahal temanya lumayan menjanjikan. Minimal Rachel dibekali beladiri & pistol apalagi jetika ibunya tewas ketika keduanya sedang melakukan percakapan telepon setelah Rachel dipindahkan ke Jackson Hole.

A bit too much angst...Dirk Payson, deputy sheriff in Jackson Hole, lost wife and infant in car accident, then best friend (accident?), then best friend's wife in accident - but her infant survived... and into his tragic life comes Susan Donovan aka Rachel Carson, in witness protection - her drug lord husband beat her and she lost the fetus she was carrying... five years later, he escaped prison and she knows he'll come for her... so she is relocated to Jackson Hole, where she witnesses the accident, helps the sheriff retrieve the baby, and goes with the sheriff to his home to care for his goddaughter... and 5 months of attraction never spoken of... of peace and joy - but not deep personal truths... until she decides to tell him the truth... and in a nick of time, as her ex-husband has found her, and Dirk gets there in a nick of time to rescue her!!!

But they are friends, they both have patience to wait...

My Review: I have a tendency to read anything set in Wyoming, I love the small towns and ranch life. I found it a little odd that this is the second book in the series but didn't really seem to have any connection to the previous book in the series. I was curious about the continuing story from that book to this one, but this read more as a companion novel, simply sharing the setting. The suspense element was a little predictable, as a result the fear factor didn't really come into play at all for me. I also found the relationship roadblock to be rather weak, other than the whole identity secret. I did enjoy the little details about quilting and the way the town gossip was introduced, setting up for the next book. I am sure I will quickly forget Rachel and Cade but it was a good stepping stone.

Jackson Hole Series Buku 2

Tebak aja lah lanjutannya 😅

Sorry to say , this book was just ok for me . I kind of felt more like I was reading an idea for a story rather then a finished book , the characters had no depth there was no in depth conversations. The main couple had no chemistry that I could feel , and it seemed like Cade showed very little feeling for his friends situation or any love for the baby , patting her on the head one or twice is all he did no hugs that I could determine from the story I read . Rachael was the only one that had any emotion that showed what she was going throw. I just didn't feel enough emotion through out this book for my taste sorry . I do like other books from this author so I do recommend her books over all .

Rachel Carson is in the federal witness protection program and she has been relocated to Jackson Hole, WY, after her ex has escaped prison. Her first day there she meets deputy sheriff Cade Garner at a wreck and helps him with the baby who has survived. He hires her as his nanny after doing a background check. Naturally love develops and Rachel has to tell him who she really is. He tells her he and his family will keep her safe and when her ex breaks into the house, Cade comes back home and arrests the ex.

McKenna has done another great job with this story.

Lindsay writes a wonderful book no matter what the subject is. Anyone in Rachel's position would be frightened, esp. since her husband threw a punch to her abdomen when she was 6 to 7 months pregnant. She lost that child but she got away from Dirk, who was her husband for about 5 years, but he was heavy with his fist. She hit him with a cast ironed skillet.
She was found in the road and turned over to the witness protection. She was moved around a lot in 5 years, but Dirk escaped from jail and they had to move her again. And I can't tell you how it ends.

This story has a great beginning; suspenseful and tense. Then almost the rest of the story is long-winded, repetitive, overly sentimental, mental angst churning. All that left me time to wonder about things: Where are the baby's grandparents? Does Rachel still dye her hair to hide her blonde; if so, how does she get & hide the dye from Cade? What does she do with all her old burner phones after her monthly calls? I got bored with the situation that never gets resolved until the rushed ending.

This was an okay book but not much happened to be honest. The "action" happens at the beginning 25 pages and end 50 pages...even the smut portion. Everything else was people caught in their feels and not talking to each other. Middle 250 pages only slice of life, serial tension, and mild angst.

As the book begins, we meet Susan who is battered by her husband Dirk. She just barely escapes with her life, but her unborn daughter is not so lucky. Her husband is caught and put in prison, but Susan is still in danger from the rest of the members of the drug cartel that Dirk is a part of. She is placed in witness protection by the FBI and her name is changed to Rachel Carson. It is 5 years later and she is being relocated again...Dirk is on the loose and could find her at any moment. Her FBI handler Brenda tells her whe is going to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, somewhere Dirk would not think to look for her. When she arrives, she immediately meets Cade Garner, the local sheriff, at the scene of an accident. His friend was involved in the accident and she dies as a result, leaving her daughter Jenny in Cade's care, as he is the appointed godfather. Rachel gets involved right away, wanting to help, but also trying to fill the void in her own life. As she gets to know Jenny, Cade, and Cade's family, she can't help but fall for them. She finds that her and Cade both have known loss in their lives and have much in common. But she wonders if she will ever get to live the life she wants knowing that her ex-husband could find her and kill her and everyone she loves.

My opinion: I had very high hopes for this book by reading the synopsis. The story really sounds intriguing, a woman on the run from a man who has caused her unimaginable pain; learning to trust again and start her life over, while the threat of her ex-husband still looms over her. However, I really could not develop a connection with the characters. Background was given on Rachel (Susan), Cade, and Dirk of course, but it did not help me connect with them. A lot of the details were inserted numerous times (the fact that she was originally from a farm in Iowa, for example), which I didn't feel was exactly necessary. Also, the conversations between Rachel and other people (Cade, her mom, Brenda) were almost the same every time; it gave me a serious case of deja vu. For example, when talking to Brenda, it was always along the lines that she felt that she shouldn't stay with Cade because it put his whole family in danger; Brenda always assured her she should stay there. That same conversation happened about three times (or more) throughout the book. The same is true with the other characters. The story line skipped months at a time also, which was frustrating...what happened during all of the time we didn't get to hear about? There also were not a whole lot of meaningful conversations between Rachel and Cade, so it was hard to believe that they were in love with each other. I just didn't feel it, besides the fact that their internal dialogue kept indicating that they were falling for each other. I guess by the brief synopsis I also assumed it would be a little more suspenseful, but the few sections that were specific to Dirk and what he was up to were too few and far between and failed to get my blood pumping. I was very disappointed because I had very high hopes for this book but it just fell flat.
My rating: 2/5 stars

Dibandingkan seri pertama "Shadow From The Past" saya lebih menyukai seri pertama.

One bad decision changed Rachel's life forever. After her ex-husband killed their unborn child, and nearly killed her, Rachel testifies against her drug lord husband and lands in the FBI's witness protection program. But now he's escaped, and Rachel flees to a small Wyoming town where she falls in love with Sheriff Cade Turner, his adopted baby girl, and the entire small community. But when her past finds her, the consequences can be deadly.

This is my first time reading a McKenna book. In honesty, the dialog, both internal and external, felt forced and unnecessary in most places, as well as repetitious. The family took to Rachel way too fast, and so did Cade. And the ending was wrapped too neatly without feeling like the tension built to a peak.

In saying that, McKenna knows how to lay out the setting and landscape so you feel like you're right where the characters are. There was also a lot of sentiment and emotion in this story from the character's history, which made you root for them. *SPOILER* I also like that she had the mother assassinated, instead of going the easy route and saving everyone. Unexpected and well-done on that front.

Susan was abused by her husband, Dirk, and subsequently lost her baby as a result of him punching her. He was sent to jail after she testified against him and she was put into the witness protection system.
She had to change her name and move-then Dirk excaped the prison so she was on the move again known as Rachel, this time. On her way to Jackson Hole, she came across an accidnet that took the life of a young mother but the little baby survived only to be the godchild of Cade, a member of the sheriff's department. He has lost his wife and infant in an accident so he needed someone to take care of his godchild. Rachel became the nanny. Dirk was still looking for her.
Will Rachel ever be happy again? What will dome of Dirk? What a great read!

while this was a fairly decent book there was to much about they way the 2 charachters boh wanted to hae se wth each other, but couldnt let the other one know...it was like the athor had 500 ways to say the same thing to fill up the book. i would liked to have a little more ( not much, but a little) of dirk stalking the mother or something more to sink my teeth into. basic story was good, but could have been better. (even if they left some out some of the sexual tension and just had less pages.)

Lindsay McHenna's early books kept you interested while telling a good story. In her later works, she emphasizes her characters goodness and dedication to saving our natural resources so much that the story is almost lost. The first two thirds of this book are boring as the characters keep questioning themselves whether they love the other person (duh, it's a romance) and how they could have put the other person in jeopardy. The last third of the book picks up the pace..

Do you believe in fate? Rachel Carson did not either when she met Sheriff Cade Garner after a fatal accident in Jackson Hole, Wyoming that left a tiny baby orphaned. She was running from her past and he was faced with being a single father of this little baby. Rachel was a nanny looking for a job and Sheriff Garner was needing someone to help him with his God Child. Fate stepped in and the mystery envelopes from her past. Good story

Slow suspense romance novel about a abused girl in the witness protection program hiding from her ex husband. Susan gets placed in a town called Jackson hole and meets a man,Cade,in which they fall in love and fight their feelings for one another. Wasn't my favorite book but I finished it so that has to count for something.
