On The Edge
By K.G. Ruess
How did I feel when this book ended? Wrecked and ready for MORE! There are SO MANY questions left unanswered and have already planned a re-read to look for more Easter eggs KG likely dropped that I missed the first time I read this book. She’s known as the Queen of Cliffies, and this book is on par with this moniker.
Alright, so On The Edge (OTE) follows up from As We Fight (AWF) and it picks up right away. Rosalie (“Rosie”) and her guys (Enzo, Cole, Ethan, and Fox … + Anson???) are still navigating their way through their relationship as college students, managing classes, extracurricular activities, etc. The guys are still insanely jealous of the time Rosie spends with Anson. Enzo becomes more involved in the “family business” which creates worry and anxiety for her guys as her safety is paramount to them, yet they can’t walk away from what they agreed on – working for Enzo’s father – even though they know this is ultimately the only way to ensure her safety long-term. For this reason, Rosie is “permitted” to continue to be friends with (read: escorted around by/protected by) Anson. As expected, the more time Rosie spends with Anson, the more she questions her feelings for her friend – is it more?
We learned several key plot twists in AWF that continue in OTE – most notably the discovery of a change in a family tree that would create quite the stir in the Mayfair mafia world if publicized. Guess what? It happens again in OTE and after I picked my jaw up off the floor, I was living for it! It’s not who you think, and for me, came from LEFT FIELD! KG with the rollercoaster – hands up, time to hold on & scream!
In OTE, we see more of the Bolten and Chapel Crest crew crossing over. If you keep up with KG’s fan page on FB or her Discord channel, you knew this was coming. I was wondering how everything would intertwine stories and KG put it together quite nicely. Anson is more involved in the Chapel Crest story than I originally realized, and I found myself pleading with him to be careful with all of the folks he does business with because they are some crooked folks! I am looking forward to seeing how this progresses through Into The Fire (ITF, book 4).
Everett Church and Alice Landry are literally the devil incarnate. I am predicting Everett is going to end up being the cockroach that NEVER D!ES, despite all of the figurative sprays with poison, stomps, and traps set. Ugh!
Some quotes from the book (no spoilers, unless you speak Sylar’s “language” as these come from him) that had me reeling, and I know there’s more to them than what immediately meets the eye – this is what has me literally ON THE EDGE waiting for ITF to drop!:
“Foxes are tricky beasts. Cunning and sly, there’s more than what meets the eye. They hide in forests and mountaintops high. And before long, the hand which is held joins another. One man. One woman. And now. . . a new brother.”
He backed away. “Attend the party tonight. Make the move. Seal your fate. And when the fox comes out from the hole he’s hiding in, it will be your duty to spread those demon wings of yours and do what you do best.” “What's that?” I asked, my heart pounding hard. “Fight.”
We know in the upcoming books, there is going to be a significant death (funeral referenced in Jamie’s book, Double Dare You) that will break us, the question is: who will it be, and can we survive it?!
