Susan Stoker has complete control of my emotions in this 5th installment of The Refuge series!
In Deserving Lara, book five of The Refuge series by Susan Stoker, Susan once again plays my emotions like a fiddle! Excellently written, Susan's words evoke laughter, tears, sighs, and more than a few "Hell,Yeah" fist bumps! Deserving Lara is a roller coaster of "feels" with an underlying current of slow burn sexual tension of a new romance, and all the suspense I have come to love in a Susan Stoker romance novel. Deserving Lara is sure to be another best seller!
This story involves Lara, who was rescued by her best friend Cora, the co-owners of The Refuge in the previous book, and the most notable owner to Lara, Callen "Owl" Kauffman. Owl, unlike the rest of the owners, is not Special Forces but an expert Night Stalker helicopter pilot. He is no less of a hero than his friends, but like everyone who seeks healing at The Refuge, his personal demons bar him from recognizing his strong points. It is those demons that make him the perfect support person for Lara. Lara is a strong survivor, but only through Owl's patience and caring will she ever believe it. Their journey is so lovingly documented, the characters so well-developed and three-dimensional, Lara and Owl become real and believable. I was more than a reader, I was a like a back-stage observer as their adventure and love story enfolded. Again, Susan Stoker's flawless planning and execution created an edge-of your-seat suspenseful romance story.
I especially love the dual themes of "found family" and recognition that PTSD survivors are "bent not broken!" Throughout the series, I have been grateful for Susan's awesome sensitivity and empathy for my military brothers and sisters who have seen the worst that men can do to one another and struggle to rejoin a society far removed from the one they fought in. Susan brings their stories alive while giving us all hope that a happily ever after ending is possible for all of us. After reading these books, I pray that men and women of The Refuge are out there somewhere building more sanctuaries and treatment centers dedicated to holistic healing for returning veterans.
Well done, Susan! I can hardly wait for the next two books. Meanwhile, I will continue to read your other series while praying all goes well with the drafting of Deserving Maisy.
