Yu has finally started her journey towards becoming a true cultivator. As a member of the prestigious Black Dragon sect and the disciple of the infamous – and possibly mad – sect leader, she is in the perfect position to finally achieve her goals.
Yet despite her newfound abilities and enviable status, the sect holds challenges and dangers far greater than anything Yu faced in her rural home. Her sect is a brutal place – where power rules all.
And such power can create monsters.
Thrust into the spotlight – Yu once more finds herself the object of disdain and prejudice. She is a competitor to be crushed, a verger girl daring to rise beyond her station, unworthy of the gifts she has been given. Her enemies are everywhere, and they will stop at nothing to see her fail.
Despite the many daggers aimed at her throat, Yu must climb her way through the ranks of her new home, grow her cultivation, and reveal the true depths of her power.
Hey readers! I'm author D.I. Freed. Thank you for looking into my books. I'm a computer and gaming geek who loved epic fantasy, sci-fi books from the moment I could read. I've also loved playing video games and that got me into the LitRPG genre. And so I decided to give writing it a shot. I hope you enjoy my books. I wish you the best. Stay safe and healthy!
I love the cultivation in this and seeing Yu getting stronger. Some of her experiences can be triggering as it is only mentioned here and there, but still it can be triggering for some who've experienced sexual abuse so keep an eye out for that. Otherwise, this was a truly epic book to read.
I absolutely love it when LitRPG authors write strong female leads! Freed has created one of my most favourite characters by far and I cannot wait for the next book to come out. I honestly love the relationship betwee Ai and Yu and my little lesbian heart seriously wants these two to fall in love as they struggle through their own personal demons, leaning on one another and just BAM... they fall in love along the way.
But meh... it's RARE for authors to write strong female mains, so I highly doubt many are willing to write their character as Queer too. Oh welp...

The school politics was a bit much, but It had to be done in order to build the world our main character is going to be in for the next decade or more. I suppose once she learns to “Step” she can be anywhere but for now it’s all about school.
What is really Frustrating is All these plots to kill her is getting to be ridiculous. It’s seemingly from everywhere and everyone. From Emperors and High end assassin guilds to teachers and shop keepers. It’s effing ridiculous. Worse yet…The people who can kill her easily keep fumbling about like clowns making intricate plots that fail, when they could just walk up to her and kill her without repercussions, while those who shouldn’t be able to touch her with their power or position, just attack her. They have better results but still fail. They keep getting within inches of doing it but fail for one contrived reason or another . It’s reads like a bad kids cartoon series.
Then there is the MC she is good if not great. I like how “mostly” competent she is. Some may call her a Mary Sue, but what she really is, is born on the higher end of potential. So what she is capable of doing will be a breeze for her while it would be a struggle for all most everyone else. Should she hold herself back because other characters you’ve read somewhere aren’t capable of handling those similar situations as efficiently? I don’t think she should.
Speaking of handling situations. There are situations that the character should be able to handle easily but the author wrote some contrived nonsense that introduces unneeded drama that counters everything he wrote about the character and her capabilities. He would put her in life or death situations then inject her with a large dose of moral crisis. In other cases he would give her all the ability, skill, power and talent to handle a situation, but don’t let her use it until the bitter end of the battle when she nearly gasping for her last breath. It’s all reads fake af! That last battle in this book… good lord did that read as contrived! Roll my eyes to the heavens that was some b s right there. The girl could pause time… yet keeps forgetting that, and allows herself to be beaten within an inch of her life while monologuing …roll my eyes.
I am writing this so that the author STOP doing all that fake contrived nonsense in the books to follow.
Anyway… Bai is a great addition, too bad he immediately became a background prop that gets a honorable mention every now and then. Smh. Just another thing the author brings in that the seemingly doesn’t know what to do with. Like most of the abilities he gave the MC. It’s all there except for when she needs it the most. Smh. I hate it when authors do that. You can’t have it both ways, either she has that talent and can use it or you shouldn’t have given her that capability and shouldn’t be trying to write ‘around’ the ability! Smgdh
excellent storyline, likable, female, MC, a little bit slow on progression.
First of all, if you like this genre, you’ll like this book. The only problem I found was that the MC, who is female, which I like, is a little whiny, you forget thshe’s only 15 at times and when the wine comes up, you remember. Her cadre of side kicks seem to be a little out of touch to be in this environment. I find the progression a little bit slower than it should be. There should be some time jumps as we see the character progress after all she hast to open a lot of meridians. There are times in the book when the main character seems indecisive when she shouldn’t be, no spoilers you’ll see what I mean. Good book go ahead and read it. Can’t wait for the next release.
In book two Yu starts her new life at the Black Dragon academy. The rules are harsh, and breaking even one of them gets a person expelled. It's not enough to not break rules but Yu is tasked by her master to fight until she reaches the top twenty thousand competitors in the outer sect, along with taking classes for each of her elements.
Book two does have it's up and downs. The story drags a little when the author is describing what is happening instead of us seeing Yu taking her classes. There really isn't much of a plot except to not die, don't get expelled, and try not to make the big and powerful clans angry. She fails at this last task, and not by a little.
The editing is good but not great here. I found a few errors but I enjoyed the book enough that they didn't matter. Yu does progress in her classes as she begins to gather people around her. There aren't any stats per se, but we do see Yu make progress in every facet of her life, from healing, to fighting, to killing demonic beasts, and much more. This is a busy book and it is sometimes hard to keep track of it all.
Overall, I think I enjoyed book one more than book two. Then again, book two was necessary to get through until she is an inner sect member. It's there that I think we'll start seeing more story lines.
A recommended series for those who enjoy Wuxia. 5/5*
What can I say? There's not a lot of ground-breaking world-building here. What it does have is a compelling central story with sympathetic characters. I could happily read this series all day.
This second book goes deep into academy genre. Very light litrpg elements, but many parts wonderfully remind me of an xbox kung fu mmo I used to play (9 dragons, Black Desert, etc).
Solid continuation and just as filled as the first even with a more static setting.
In this sequel we get more of a structured growth in our new school setting. Freed has constructed a brilliant world filled with strife and dark plans but Yu is growing into a hero to tackle them all. I really like how Freed constructs his conflicts and entry of new characters into the narrative; the story never feels slow or forced. The writing itself is solid and allows for enough of an imaginative setting without going overboard (except perhaps in the schools original description but I could skip passed that).
In terms of cons, I believe some characters do fall flat. Her first friend for instance while I understand she's had a traumatizing experience she's basically been described as a pet(or bond) and hasn't added much to the story. And on that note, as Bai is a core partner for her and part of her power I hope we are more of the pair working together than as has been written. And in some conflicts Yu's personality does seem to drive many easily avoided situations- but even as perfect of a prophesied hero can be, she certainly has her flaws which makes her a bit more believable if still too good to be true.
Overall though I am thoroughly enjoying the story and can't wait for the next installment. I haven't read Freeds other work yet but he's got a guaranteed buyer for the foreseeable future if the quality keeps up at this level. From what I've seen from just these 2 books id say he is certainly still improving. Well done sir and thank you.
Only a few weeks ago I rated the first book of this series as my best read in 2023 so far, and then book 2 of the series lands flat on its face. A real hefty disappointment.
The simple stuff first, despite editing the book still contains several glaring grammar and spelling errors that even grammarly would have found and autocorrected. Whoever edited this book needs to get their shit together.
The content.
The story continues with the protagonist being sent to the sect, where she is supposed to "join like a normal person and not getting any help from the sect leader".
This premise is straight away kicked out of the window when the "AI Formation Testing Center" of the sect grants her a chance to fight for extra rewards, which others cannot do, just because of unexplained reasons. The author even forgets to explain the rewards until many chapters later where it seems he remembered that he forgot to do so. (This should have been caught during editing and fixed)
I enjoyed book 1 so much because it was playing a bit with cultivation novel tropes and subverting them by more or less pointing out how idiotic the societies in these stories are and that they would collapse if people were left unchecked to behaved like lunatics.
Book 2 just completely dismisses that idea and creates a completely stereotypical sect that could be copy & pasted from any random cultivation novel. Glaring nepotism, classism, strong abusing the weak, theft, rape, abuse, murder between sect deciples and the "law enforcement" is basically like "nah, why should we do anything?" It is so moronic I wanted to smash my Kindle against a wall. It hurts your brain.
So how does the author address this issue? He creates situations in which the MC, still protected by her Master because she is the Sect Leader's only deciple, gets blackmailed and beaten up by a senior sect member, then someone of a higher cultivation level wanted to rape he, but she was saved by a random conveniently appearing female desciple.
So the MC goes on a massive rant against all the law enforcement elders, the vice sect leader and the sect in general, AT THE FUCKING TABLE WHERE THEY ARE EATING, and basically lays down human rights because that is EXACTLY what a random 15 year old girl would be doing in the face of Elders who could squish her like a bug by flexing a finger.
The whole story is a chain of events losely added after another without sense or overarching plot. It is all random garbage and when the author runs out of ideas how to ACTUALLY write the story about her cultivation progress he adds a timeskip.
This book is a massive letdown and basically killed the series for me.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS NOVEL.

Once again I just devoured this story, and enjoyed it very much.
It's one of those stories where, if I listed the flaws before reading it I would assume I would find the book deeply mediocre, but actually reading it was super enjoyable. Like, the main character has: uniquely good meridians, uniquely many meridians, the best possible category of body strength, all three magic types (unique), six different affinities including an uber rare one (that allows her to teleport and intermittently have her make the correct choice due to sensing the future), is gorgeous, has an eidetic memory, was gifted an uber rare spirit weapon (and incredibly good armor set and hook swords), bonded with a tiger cub from uber powerful parents, and is incredible at martial arts. And yet, I really enjoy following her adventures and watching her learn and both crush her peers while still able to be crushed by those levels above her.
I also appreciated that the inevitable sect members to hate the MC for no reason actually had a reason! Even if it was kinda excessive. The family had a grudge against her master, who was too powerful to go against, so they went against her instead. Also she did have some anger issues and blow up at some people to an unreasonable degree, which made sense that it would turn some people off.
I liked the friends she made well enough, though I hope Ai experiences some growth because I think it will get old if she just continually clings to Yu and refuses to cultivate because trauma.
The kidnapping caused some very legit tension, as well as the reveal that two of her friends had been coopted just because of her proximity (though they forgave her ofc).
Looking forward to the next!

I didn't grow warm with MC as i didn't find her especially likeable. On the one hand she is immature, prude and shy on the other, she is cheeky, quite full of herself and blabs a lethal secret. Somehow, her being that special and the chosen one made her less interesting and her antagonists obsession with her didn't improve the matter either.. When i compared the heroine with the hero of a similar plot the "a thousand li" series, i found her lacking. It is hard to believe that a girl that only turned 15 is so proficient with swords already. She is just too op and special to make her struggles intriguing as there is no hero's story, just like in modern Hollywood it is more of a her-o's story..
Sadly, the pacing of the story makes it very dull at times. I skimmed over a lot of pages as i really didn't care about school tedium and girl small talk.
Due to missing action and boredom, i reached a point when i accepted that stopped caring about the plot a long time ago and lost hope for it to ever get better..
Criticism and comments
“We have to share" a flat" with a girl?” This is a strange sentiment for boys around twenty.. Most would be rather delighted..
"Yu winced as she recognized how annoying it must be to be the only boy in a suite of girls." Is everyone gay?
I was amused about the MC's complaints about the boys alleged smell as she herself so often doesn't manage to wash. What a bitchy, smelly, little hypocrite!
Of course a strory with a female protagonist needs a prince. What a cliché!
The first volume had a few problems, but overall, I enjoyed it and was looking forward to the second volume. Unfortunately, with the move to the new sect setting, many of the first volume problems were amplified, and now I'm struggling to keep going with this sequel.
The main character is a 'chosen one' style character, with every possible advantage heaped on them. It was a bit over the top in the first book, but it's not an unusual way to structure a cultivation story, and in the first book the events leading to it were interesting if straining disbelief a bit with how unlikely they all were.
Going into the second book, the problem this creates is that there should be a balance between characters jealous of the main character's unique power and advantages and those who see the opportunity it represents.
Unfortunately, characters simply ignore all this to create constant, annoying, and highly contrived conflict that is tediously repetitive. I think this might be a problem with drafting through Royal Road rather than using a traditional novel writing approach—with a good editor, many of these repetitive conflicts could have been condensed down to a few example scenes and then some summary to show that they happen a lot without having to go through each repeating encounter in full detail.
Probably one for hardcore cultivation story lovers only.
I received a free review copy of Revealed from Portal Books.
Reborn, the first book in the Jade Phoenix series, was a delight to read but Revealed, the second installment, is even better and at nearly 900 pages in length the fun lasts a long time. In Reborn, the MC Yu is described, torn down and then gloriously rebuilt, here in Revealed author D.I. Freed develops Yu through the efforts of her mentor, the leader of the Black Dragon sect, and Yu's own indomitable will and unique talent set. It's a very different book and quite a journey as Yu goes from being a friendless 13-year old girl from the verge to a young woman with an entourage and a huge adventure ahead of her--great setup for book 3, by the way. It's a delight to see how the events of the first novel create so many opportunities in the second.
This is a cultivation book so the martial action is sporadic and the focus is on the gradual development of meridians, skills and personal relationships. In Revealed Yu really comes into her own and you start to see glimmers of the future that D.I. Freed intends for Yu and her friends. This is a really interesting series and I look forward to the next book. It's going to start off with quite an adventure.
An absolutely outstanding epic. 5 stars all the way.
Absolutely loved the two books in this epic missive. The creativity and writing of the author along with the world building and the conflicts that Yu had to overcome. Her "mad" master is so out of control and she has enemies crawling out of the woodwork trying to slip blades into her back. Still, she understands that strength should be used not for its own sake, but to help others whilst at the same time, not coddling the weak.
I am interested to find out Ai's story and what about her makes Yu so protective since it looks like she's been crushed by her terrible experience that changed her. How will a relationship with prince Zihao develop? Who is the matriarch and what is her adgenda? What's up with the Asura sect since they didn't seem to have carried out all of the matriarch's instructions and are well aware of her reputation regarding failure. Also, what's up with the yellow eyed assassin, Scar? He too should have a greater part to play in the story.
I am so sad that book three is not yet out and based on the size of the first two, it will likely be some time until their release. I wait anxiously as this series is most intriguing and captivating.
Stop and buy Reborn the first book in the series which lead me to Revealed book 2. I knew I would love this book. I turned off my tv and read for the next four hours. Had to stop to get some sleep. I am over 60 and enjoyed the book and I believe 13 and order will love it.
The main character is a young girl who goes through a lot of tribulations. She is wise beyond her years which make her character believable in things she accomplishes. If you like the Harry Potter books you will enjoy the author’s books because he has created another fantasy world that takes your imagination to places hard to dream up.
To the author: Two things I review before l purchase ebooks and audiobooks are the jacket cover and book summary. I read Revealed and I will buy the audiobook as soon you sale it. I already have Reborn in audiobook. I can’t wait for the series to continue.
I really enjoyed this book and it was certainly value for money, although I suspect some editing may have improved the overall story.
The story began well, but by the end of a dozen chapters I had some doubts about the way the author had set up the Black Dragon Sect. The author wants there to be some threat and confrontation to keep the story going, but some of rules, regulations and incidents really don’t make sense.
By halfway I was beginning to think that although the sect is supposed to be the best, it is a corrupt shambles, this organisation is supposed to be thousands of years old, how? I quite enjoy reading about Yu overcoming problems, but I wish the author had tried a bit harder not to make the Sect so ridiculously. I know there are reasons for this and I presume things become clearer later in the story, but it is still slightly annoying while you are reading it.
Yu continues to advance, as she is constantly pushed forward by her own drive, her master/ teacher, her enemies' attacks, and the repercussion of her own actions. I especially like that she tries to remain polite, yet refuses to give in to the pressures of her peers and society to take actions she finds dishonorable. I also like that her master is happy with her helping to, if inadvertently at times, root out corruption, treason, and the like amongst the people in his sect.
The cultivation portion as well is interesting and thankfully not overwhelming with stats; we only see them occasionally and when it is useful.
I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. The upcoming realm exploration and how she starts to lead her new faction should be interesting. :)
Finished with my second ever LitRPG story, a genre I was not really familiar with in books. I am certainly glad I took the dive into it, because REVEALED by D.I. Freed was a fantastic story. Book 2 of The Jade Phoenix Saga continued the story of Yu and the many obstacles and challenges encountered while attending the Black Dragon sect.
The different sections, classes and skills described about the sects were intriguing. The detail on how to achieve, utilize, and master some of the skills by Yu was done in such a way to not seem repetitive or boring. I found myself wishing to just read over and over Yu's daily class interactions. But that would probably have not helped the story D.I. Freed was telling!
Overall, a fantastic book, that I wished had been longer! So suffice to say, I can't wait for the next book!
Best complete work author done so far. Beat book one as my favorite of his. His first series is good also. Book 3 of that series is also in the works going by his Royal Road post. Not as good but still one of the most original plot on system type books. His work keeps getting better, made me wonder on book 3 if both series. I found web site Royalroad.com I've noticed this author has both series there. Also found many great stories I've found lately had started there. Give it a try. He has a third story started but stop thats my favorite. Work on hold for work on this book and other book. There enough get a taste its my favorite. Give it try, if author gets enough attention maybe he'll finish that too
I enjoyed the book. I love how our main character is such a strong person. She is a kind and protective of that of her friends and people she just met. I love how she always stick up for her herself, never backing down. Even though that is also exactly why I dislike her too.
Shes a little overbearing and disrespectful towards her elders because of the postion she has. I know she is trying to help people in the process that is why she did what she did, but I feel like that is not really how a main character would act towards their elders especielly not in a historical cultivation book. I felt like there could have been other ways to do it.
I really enjoyed her journey, I can't wait for book three. Spirit realm I waiting for you so hurry up. Lol
Main character Yu was wonderful. Being low and being brought High in life, being given a 2nd chance and not squandering it. No offense, but sometimes gamers aren't able bring the emotion and feeling into what they write. Your world=building is amazing, action packed, and yet the development and growth of her as a person was heartwarming. I was turning pages so fast, I even bought the Audible of book #2 so I could listen at work. You did a FANTASTIC job! I fell in love with Yu and her straight on approach to life. She is someone I would actually like to become friends with. I am eagerly waiting for Book #3!! Get to Writing!!! LOL
Whereas the first book tells the tale of Yu overcoming the damage from her childhood and stepping into her own power and position in her clan and family, this one follows the next phase of her progression as she joins a sect.
The author successfully expands the world our hero inhabits without losing all the flavor and character we lived about her originally.
The book is also nice and long so you have plenty of time and space to enjoy reading about her adventures.
If you enjoyed the first one or just progression stories in general you’ll love this one just as much.
I won’t say this was better than the first because the first book was simply awesome but focused on a child growing into adolescence. This book focused on a teen trying to grow into early adulthood away from her family, in a sect, surrounded by enemies. Yu has the potential to be the most powerful cultivator seen in millennia, humanities savior……but that’s only if she survives. Right now the powerful have barely begun to notice her and already feel her a threat but also a potential boon for whoever can control her. So I cannot wait to see what awaits her as she continues to grow. Book 3 can’t get here fast enough
Lit role play game series very different read from my normal
I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed by this book series. I’ve never been very interested in LitRPG stories or the writing style. I caught myself reading the initial blurb on book 1 and found it different and intriguing, so I downloaded it and was immediately caught up in the storyline. The characters were well written very engaging. The plot of the story was very well fleshed out. The author did a great job of building his protagonist’s characters and antagonist’s characters into this fascinating story that captures your imagination. Well done.
The book really felt as if it was setting up for more to come, and is making me excited to see how things play out. The cast of characters was greatly expanded upon, and it was nice to see the clearly overpowered main character struggle.
For things I did not like. It is possible to build a world with power struggles and not have any sexual predators in it. Especially when the main character's first stages of puberty are detailed in the novel.
I think there are a lot of good ideas in this book that are worth a lot of merit, but a few scenes really made me sit back and go "Yeah I do not see why that would be needed."
Really enjoying the series. This book was as good as the first book. Somehow this this series hit most of my good nerves and happy zones. The MC is very weak and yet very strong. She has an extreme work ethic(no choice really). An even though she's extremely busy she finds time to help her friends. Overall I just enjoy the series and the character and the way the author presents. Unfortunately that also means I have to wait for a while for the next book.
Throughly enjoyed reading about Her continued success through adversity. My only complaint is I get a bit turned around by Yu and Lu and sometimes have to back track to figure out which one is talking. Certain People are coming out of their shells and making friends and we get to meet a couple of new cute and magnificent bond animals. The author created a really interesting, brutal yet captivating world with a healthy dose of crazy added and I love it! Can't wait to read the next book!
I like that Yu's new master mostly lets her grow on her own. He does have expectations, and gives her rules to follow. Still, her growth is her effort and choice. I am disappointed we didn't see Yu explore the disappearing blood. Still dislike the powerful woman, and the journal entries had no explanation. I kind of decided to guess they were about her. I dislike the idea of old artefacts stealing and harming. Hoping a trick is found for that. Collecting all would make me grin too. Great read, even the classes and ability explanations were fun to read.
I was bitterly disappointed to discover that book 3 was not yet completed (or started even?), so I will have to wait for it to come out - whenever it does.
I absolutely loved reading this story as much as I did the first one… it was original, creative, and fiercely compelling.
Had I known at the beginning that the series was incomplete, I may not have started it because I hate, with a passion, having to wait to read all the parts of a story. But, I’m hooked now so I guess I’m hanging in there until the end because I just gots to know!
