This last Codex for ninth edition Warhammer 40,000 is the first that has been dedicated to the Blood God’s chosen legion. The Codex is disappointingly small at only 88 pages in length (roughly the size of the Space Marine Codex Supplements) but whether this is because it was released so late in ninth edition’s life and was going to become obsolete relatively soon anyway, or because this is the length we can expect for tenth edition I do not know.
The background section of the Codex is reasonably good for a book of this length with the usual brief overview of the Legion itself some good information on the new unit types introduced, such as the cultists known as Jakhals, the possessed known as Eightbound and, of course, the Daemon Primarch Angron himself. The artwork in the book is as great as ever for a Codex, and I particularly like the black and red artwork used as a backdrop for the section about various actions perpetrated in the name of Khorne .
The rules seem reasonably good, although I would have appreciated a couple more units, such as Blood Slaughterer daemon engines (which the World Bearers could take in their squads back in the first edition of the game), but the ones we got seem quite good at least. The small number of Stratagems, and making them limited to specific sub-factions, is apparently something that will be introduced for tenth edition and is something I quite like as I have never been a fan of Stratagems in general so limiting them is a good thing for me. The World Eater’s narrative Crusade rules allow them to harvest the skulls of their enemies to purchase unit upgrades, which is very lore appropriate.
