Marilyn Murphy was a lesbian feminist activist and author. She had a long running column in Lesbian News in 1982, called Lesbian Logic, and a selection of these columns appeared in her 1991 book, Are You Girls Traveling Alone? Murphy was a primary founder of the feminist group Califia Community and later an active member of the organization Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (OLOC).
An excellent collection of lesbian feminist-separatist essays, that came from the Marilyn's work at the Lesbian News newspaper. Is very accesible, funny and really direct. Murphy's feminist politics are very illuminating in all senses. A must read!
It was long enough ago that I don't really remember it, but I do remember that I loved it. The answer to "Are You Girls Traveling Alone?" was "no, we're traveling with each other, we are partners." Of course, how can you be alone when you're with someone? (Even you are not partners.) And, of course, the idea that women of a certain age are still being called "girls"!
Delightful, uplifting, witty, interesting, heartbreaking, and all around a joy to read. I didn't agree with all of Murphy's political viewpoints, but, regardless, the point above stands. I haven't read a book I enjoyed so much in quite a while. I sped through this in basically one sitting. Do read this!
a fun and very engaging read! while it covers some heavy topics, Marilyn always finds a good balance between the seriousness demanded by the subject matter and her funny, conversational, and often quite direct tone. while i didn't always agree with her takes, this book is a sharp and incisive collection of second-wave lesbian feminism that i will certainly be rereading. highly recommend!
My first real study into lesbian separatist essays. There were really poignant essays and others that show how our world has changed. More than really made me think. I really appreciated the essay on aging and disability. One of my least favorites was on “women only spaces”.
