Read May 12, 2024 - August 3, 2026. Oops.
So, this only took me... Two and a half years, almost? Whoopsie. I just really had a hard time getting into these novellas, for some reason, and that combined with not having an audio version available to carry me along meant I stagnated HARD. But at long last, I have powered through and it is done!
Thankfully, I reviewed each novella individually as I read them, so the thoughts for each are fresh. I also rated each one individually, as seen below!
Hollyleaf’s Story
I love Hollyleaf <3 I’ve been super excited to get to this one, so it’s unfortunate that I happened to have a huge reading slump right when I picked it up. I think it didn’t help that I’ve been on an audiobook kick and I could not find an audiobook of this collection for the life of me. But I made it through! It took me a while to get into the cadence of a Warriors book again, but once I did it was quite enjoyable.
I do sort of wish that Hollyleaf could have gotten a super edition instead of just a novella, as this felt very short and I almost wanted to be like “what was the point…?” but at the same time, I think for once the team actually took into consideration how long the story needed to be instead of milking it for more. This just sort of filled in the gaps during Hollyleaf’s absence, and there wasn’t really a need to rehash everything else that already happened “on screen” in the main series. That said, I think some more development of her and Fallen Leaves’ relationship would have been nice. We sort of scratched the surface of him being lonely, while also knowing she had to return to her Clan eventually, but I dunno, I was expecting more.
Even so, I always love this sort of “alternate POV” thing. It’s so fun to watch as the narratives line up and get some insight as to other events happening concurrently. At some point I’d love to reread this and the main series books in tandem to really get all the details. Definitely enjoyable! I’d say 3/5 stars for this individual novella.
Mistystar’s Omen
This was one more of a miss for me, I think. I like the idea of Mistystar as a character, but we never learn too much about her in the main series and her thought processes and the way she acted in this one felt kind of forced, like they decided on a specific plotline and then she was just a puppet on strings.
I think this novella fell into a similar pitfall as Hollyleaf’s, where the story would have benefited from being a little more fleshed out. It felt like we were rushing along the basic plot points in a very rote fashion, and there wasn’t time to really sit and ponder about what certain characters might be thinking or the meaning behind their actions.
The one thing that frustrated me most was that the whole problem Mistystar decided to pull out of thin air wasn’t even a problem at all. “How will we receive signs from StarClan if Mothwing doesn’t believe in them?” Willowshine. “Mothwing doesn’t go to the Moonpool to share tongues with StarClan!” Willowshine does. “How am I supposed to lead my Clan when my medicine cat doesn’t share my belief in StarClan?” Talk. To. Willowshine.
Like, I absolutely get it that it would be jarring for Mistystar to learn that her friend of many moons actually doesn’t believe in the religion that literally everyone else in the Clans is raised with (except Cloudtail, shoutout to him). But she’s acting way too rashly in suddenly demoting a perfectly good, talented healer, especially when there’s a fully-trained apprentice to fill in the gaps. If Mothwing had no apprentice I’d understand a little more, but even then it’s like “Okay, so you’re going to go from having no connection to StarClan and a cat that can heal others, to having no connection to StarClan AND no healer. Cool.” Make it make senseeee.
Anyway, I did like the overall message, even if I think it would have been better conveyed with perhaps a younger cat that would make more sense being so impulsive and unwilling to understand other perspectives. The Clans are definitely very insular in their beliefs, so it’s an interesting topic to explore.
Also, another small nitpick: I feel like the Erin’s are vastly underestimating how much food a cat needs to survive. At one point they talk about the Clan splitting minnows so each cat gets half, and I just had to stop for a moment and laugh. I guess it was to underscore just how bad the prey shortage has gotten, but at that point, just let some cats give up their minnows. There’s no point in splitting such a tiny fish.
Enjoyed this less than the previous one, so we’ll say 2/5 stars for this individual novella.
Cloudstar’s Journey
And here we are, a whole, uh, two years later? But I finally finished this one! For whatever reason, I just could not get into this novella and so it kind of brought my progress to a halt. But at long last, I’ve made it through!
Overall, I probably liked this one the least, obviously. Maybe on par with MistyStar’s Omen, but it’s been so long it’s hard to compare.
I feel like it was misnamed, really. I was expecting to see a lot more of, well, Cloudstar’s Journey. But we only get to see the toll the Twolegs have on SkyClan territory and ultimately SkyClan being driven out, and then it’s over! What the heck?
This novella felt like it really would have been better served by being a super edition, honestly. There were so many points I felt like the author was just rushing along to the next thing rather than letting each scene sit in the space it deserved. It’s understandable, given the constraints of the novella format, but it could have been sooo much longer and actually delved into the journey itself, struggles of finding new territory, and ultimately SkyClan petering out until Cloudstar’s eventual reunion with Birdflight in the afterlife. It just feels like such a missed opportunity.
Also, I know Warriors has plenty of typos on the best day, but the mistakes in this one were rather glaring. Lots of entirely missed words and weird turns of phrase.
All in all, not my favourite, but I’d be interested in reading a fanfic that tackles the same plotline. The characters had great names, and I could see them becoming favourites. But alas, I will be giving this one 2/5 as well.
Which means, overall, I guess I’m giving the novella collection as a whole about 2.3 stars... but I’ll bump it up to 3 for Hollyleaf. Love that girlie.
Anyway, now that I’ve finally finished this, like, two years later, I can get on with my re-read! Or rather, read, at this point. Next up we’ve got DOTC #2, which will be entirely fresh material for me. I think I’ll read a summary of DOTC #1 to refresh myself before I jump in, and hopefully by the time I’ve done that my audiobook will be ready! (So excited to get back to audiobooks!)
