c1964. Another great story. Book 5 so still building the character (such as it is). I did not realise it when I was busy reading as many as I could, that there is no such author as Nick Carter which is a "house pseudonym". This one was written by Valerie Moolman. Enjoy this extract that will give you an idea of the style of writing. "This woman was no love-possessed secretary: She was a spy. Well, two could play at that game. For the man was also a spy. In fact he was Nick Carter, the agent known as "Killmaster" in America's secret intelligence organisation AXE. And the yoga-trim body that had mastered every conceivable science of killing could match this harem-trained beauty in her own arts as well." This would be a great idea for a game in writing when all had to then spin their own yarn giving this as a start. The brain boggles.

An American scientist and his attractive assistant are targeted for kidnapping, which gives Nick Carter another mission. As he rescues another scientist from a basement (or was he the aforementioned American scientist? I don't remember) Killmaster kills some enemy agents, has gratuitous sex with another, then joins a tour to Europe or somewhere where he befriends the endangered scientist in order to protect him. This somehow leads to Killmaster and the scientist boarding a passenger jet which is hijacked it's sequestered in a secret Chinese military base inside a mountain. Killmaster discovers a Chinese plan to build a doomsday bomb - one that they need the American scientist to help develop.

When I was in my late teens early twenties I read a whole bunch of Nick Carter novels. This one seemed a little disjointed upon rereading it last month. There are sequences that are really striking and fascinating while others are mediocre at best. In this adventure, the titular "Fraulein" doesn't live up to what I expected to be the master villain. In fact, the problem I found with these books is that I can't remember one from another. "Fraulein Spy" is enjoyable, but largely forgettable and not as inventive as other Killmaster entries.

A nice rewrite of an old Pulp character. Recast more in the James Bond spy mode. Good quick men's adventure read. If you are looking for some fast paced action and adventure then this is a recommended read.
