Boris Sidis was a Ukrainian-American psychologist, physician, psychiatrist, and philosopher of education. Sidis founded the New York State Psychopathic Institute and the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. He was the father of child prodigy William James Sidis. Boris Sidis eventually opposed mainstream psychology and Sigmund Freud, and thereby died ostracized. He was married to a maternal aunt of Clifton Fadiman, the noted American intellectual.

كتاب رائع شرح عن أن العقل البشري ليس كتلة واحدة صلبة، بل شبكة من دوائر عصبية مترابطة وظيفيًا لا عضويًا، تعمل كل منها لتأدية وظيفة نفسية محددة.

في الإنسان الطبيعي، تكون هذه الشبكة متكاملة؛
الذاكرة، المشاعر، الهوية والوعي تعمل ضمن نظام واحد.

أما في اضطراب تعدد الشخصيات (DID)، وغالبًا نتيجة صدمات شديدة ومبكرة، يعجز العقل عن تحمّل الألم كخبرة واحدة، فيلجأ إلى الانفصال كآلية دفاع.
فتنفصل بعض الدوائر العصبية وظيفيًا وتعمل كنُظم شبه مستقلة، لكل منها وعيها وذاكرتها وهويتها الخاصة.
