I'm not typically a fan of short stories. It seems that things are inevitably rushed, or important details are left out, and I'm often left wondering why I bothered.

This is not the case with The Forgotten Echo. The lack of details actually works for the story, because we get to feel just as confused as Cassy. Everything happens so quickly for her from the moment she is shot in a drive-by shooting, and the sense of bewilderment and slightly hallucinogenic experience in the parking lot, along with the first person point of view really helps the reader to become completely submerged in Cassy's experiences.

What worked for me:
* First person POV's in Jen's stories always help put me right into the action, and I find myself forgetting that I'm reading until real life begins to intrude.

* As scarce as the details were, I still loved the world building. I loved the concept of the Real World and the Otherworld, and the Inbetween was even more intriguing.

* I liked Echo and her friendship with Cassy, and how their relationship changed as Cassy started to keep secrets, and became wary of the secrets that Echo was obviously keeping from her.

* I've secretly (or not so secretly) got the hots for Devon *waggles eyebrows*

What didn't work for me:
* There were a few very minor grammar mistakes that drew my eye, though these weren't big enough to really detract from the entertainment.

As with every other book/story that is the beginning of a series, I'm grumpy that there aren't more books out yet for me to read lol That said, I do feel that it ended at a good stopping point rather than a big cliff hanger, and I will definitely be buying new stories in the series when they are released.

4.5/5

Part of the Immortal Echoes series, Forgotten Echo by Jen Wylie is a delightful short story telling the mysterious tale of Cassy who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time during a drive-by shooting. Just how right or wrong her timing is takes a whole novella to learn, and the author uses that space to create a fascinating universe, peopled with factions and laws that are still only hinted, still waiting with so much to learn, after a very satisfying read and enjoyable adventure.

If you’re thinking “ghost story,” then think again. Jen Wylie’s writing is much more imaginative. Cassy narrates her experience with delightfully everyday concerns—torn clothes, mess that doesn’t wash out—and an eagerness to learn that keeps the reader turning pages and wondering.

Echoes? You’ll have to read to find out what they are. Suffice it to say, poor Cassy makes a vital decision in those moments when life might run before her eyes, and the consequences leave her in a place she might never have expected. Trapped and free, she seeks a friend and answers and finds more.

The author’s richly imagined mythology has certainly drawn me in. I hope I might get to read more of this series—scif-fi fantasy, original, intriguing, and very convincingly told, with good and evil both just out of reach as complex mysteries weave their webs.

Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy of this novella by the author with a request for an honest review.

I received this e-book as a review copy from the author. This did not in any way affect my review.

This starts off with Cassy who is an innocent bystander shot in a drive by shooting. While bleeding to death a mysterious and handsome being promises to save her. She only has to give him her last breath. Cassey then becomes a Echo and starts her journey living between the real world and the other world. After a while she meets another Echo who helps her and teaches her how to live as an Echo. It's decades until she gets called to help her Immortal. I don't want to say anymore cause it will be giving away the details of this amazing story.

From the first words I was drawn in to this incredible story. Once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. Cassy is such a strong character and I loved the ending between her and her Immortal. I hope there is more to come from this story. I love all the stories Jen writes, she is such an amazing writer. This is probably my favorite of her's so far. I'm recommending this one!

One of the things I love most about goodreads and meeting other writers is the chance to read books I would for the most part not be exposed to.

The Forgotten Echo by Jen Wylie is no exception. I love how she masters writing in first person. Her details and narrative are engaged from the first page. I was relieved I wasn't being offered another vampire tale. It's always wonderful to experience a new world, new types of fictional characters. Reading the book was a journey very much like the story's protagonist. i love not knowing all the answers from the start!

Jen Wylie, has easily made this author a fan.

So far this is my favorite of all of Jen Wylie's book. It starts out at a fast pace as woman is shot in a gang fight that she inadvertantly ended up in the middle of. A mysterious being comes to her and promises to keep her from dying as long as she gives him her last breath. She does and he disappears. And she doesn't die...completely. Her body is dead but an Echo of her lives on.

As the years go by she meets another Echo and learns from her and discovers a lot of amazing things about her new world. I don't want to ruin the book by revealing what happens, but I look forward to reading the next. It was an amazing read.

This 1st person narrative is fun and fast paced. It took less than an hour for me to work my way through this entriguing tale of lost life and newly discovered world.

Wylie instantly grabs the readers' attention and leads them down an imaginative path of the death and new life of Cassy. It's definitely set up to be a series of shorts. It will draw you in and leave you excited to read the next installment!

Jen Wylie starts out with an interesting concept--a young woman shot in a parking lot finds herself saved by an Immortal and converted into an Echo (a being existing outside what we would call the real world)--but fails to develop it in any detail. The hints of a larger story swirl around but fail to materialize. See my blog for the full review.

This story was good. I liked it the only problem?...... It ended! There seems to be a much longer story just waiting to be told. It was just starting to get good an poof it was over. This story would have been good as a the first couple of chapters in a much longer book. Maybe its because I've never read the other stories, but I feel cheated.

This book had a great deal of potential but potential doesn't make a good book. It was like reading an outline of the book you wanted to write. It's a shame it could have been so much if it had ever been fleshed into a real story.
