Beyond Nostalgia

Rate this book
Praised as a monumental romance, a Gone with the Wind for the 20th Century, Beyond Nostalgia  is an unforgettable love story that shows us what it is like to love and be loved so intensely that life can never be the same again.

New York teenagers Dean Cassidy and Theresa Wayman live in a world of hard concrete, dark bricks and tough breaks. They both come from dysfunctional families at the bottom rungs of the social ladder, where happiness never comes easy. Theresa's father was shot dead at a bank robbery a few years ago. Dean's father is alive, but he has a mean temper and a nasty tongue that constantly cuts into the heart of his family. And as if all that isn't enough to deal with, Dean's mother is a paranoid schizophrenic and Theresa's is a hardcore alcoholic.

But on a cold, damp night in the spring of 1967, things suddenly look up for the underprivileged kids. It seems fate is finally in a benevolent mood when the free-spirited Dean and downright gorgeous Theresa meet at a high school dance. From there things only get better.

For the next year the youths, who've always been knocked around, bring the light of hope into each other's hearts. Together they manage to beat back all the negativity that keeps coming at them, and they have the time of their lives.

Unfortunately, though, fate is an unpredictable force. And when Dean's better judgement lapses, just one time, the mistake he makes causes Theresa to be pulled from his arms.

After that the years slip away and the two lovers push on with their lives the best they can. They both get married, and Dean has two lovely kids, but the sun never sets on a day that they don't think of one another.

Is it possible that destiny might reunite Dean and Theresa someday? If it does, what would the consequences be for them and their families? If it doesn't, could they ever be truly happy again?

Essentially a tale of a lost love and feelings that will simply not fade even after two decades, Beyond Nostalgia is a powerful story that encapsulates a man’s life; his yearnings, frustrations and finally his successes. Although the premise is a little hard to believe Tom Winton makes his story work with a combination of excellent writing and well rounded, emotionally and psychologically believable characters. The protagonist, Dean Cassidy, is a flawed and troubled individual and not always a likeable one, yet we are always able to empathise with him and his plight and this is something that carries us along as he relates his life story. In parts a felt the pace of the story slowed a little too much for my liking yet never once did I lose interest in Dean’s ultimate fate.

There is much to commend the novel but one aspect I thought worked supremely well was the juxtaposition of the unsuccessful and often unemployed Dean, trapped in an ultimately unsatisfying marriage and the subsequent part after he is a successful writer and becomes re-aquatinted with his first love. Here we see the author’s considerable skill in showing the complicated dynamics between the individual and circumstances. It also subverts and clichés about fairy tale endings.
Tom Winton is also someone with a social conscience and for this he should be commended – the fictional "Look What They've Done to Our Dream" and its message cannot be reiterated too often. Although relating to events in the US it has relevance worldwide, especially supposedly free and fair and ‘democratic’ countries where tyranny and exploitation are carried out only via smoke and mirrors and more subtle means.

I was deeply moved by this novel and at times depressed as well and as an exploration of the human condition it has the power of John Osborne. I was tempted to knock a star off for the pacing mentioned earlier yet I feel anything less than a 5 would misrepresent the quality of this work. Beyond Nostalgia is a very, very impressive read.

Beyond Nostalgia is a wonderful story. I have to admit that the beginning of the story reminded me of my husband’s experiences before being drafted. At times I had to pause to wipe tears away before diving back into the book.
Beyond Nostalgia is a memoir of sorts, of a man named Dean Cassidy. It begins inNew Yorkin 1967 and follows Dean’s life to 1992. I know that sounds like a terrible snore but the story flows well and the characters are really endearing.
I enjoy the way that Dean deals with the fial meeting with the “love of his life” Theresa Wayman. It shows great depth and strength in the character that you don’t really see before that point.
Beyond Nostalgia is a great story with real life characters. It is a contemporary story that spans the good and the bad times of a normal guy who does good.
Although this book is not in my usual preferred genre, I really enjoyed watching Dean’s life unfold.

Great story!

This is definitely a man's story from his teenage years in Queens to his adult life in Florida, Dean searches for love and meaning in life. Winton writes almost like a poet, describing with intensity starry nights and grubby New York suburbs. And then there is his teenage love. Well, read it and enjoy!

This is a book for anybody out there that had a first love that they never forgot.

This is the story of Dean Cassidy, a bleak young man who meets his true first love in the New York of the nineteen sixties. His romance with Theresa is both pure and deep, but this is also a story of human beings and Dean loses it all in one tragic, drunken act of stupidity.

And in some ways that's where the story really begins, because it really isn't a romance story. This is a tale about how life doesn't always work the way you think it will, and how we still have to go on when it doesn't. In some ways it's a story of recovery, and how life can be a messy process without simple endings.

Now Dean is forced to move on with life, haunted by the memory of the girl he loved. Can he find out how to love again, when he still loves the girl he lost? Can he ever find meaning in life, when she was all the meaning he had found so far? And if he ever found love again, could it survive alongside the ghost he carried in his heart?

And what if he ever met her again?

This is a book about love, and how it can hurt when you realize it's never going to let go. It's a story how life can stop at a given point even though it goes on, and how a man struggles to reconcile the life he has with the one he could have had...how it almost kills him, and what happens next.

I've been very general because I don't want to give away spoilers. All I can say is that I highly, highly recommend this book.

Beyond Nostalgia will keep you up reading all night.
The first half is a wonderful romance, period language, a late sixties Catcher in the Rye feel except that Dean and Theresa are both lovable. I kept thinking to myself 'it's going to go wrong now, no, not yet, yes, it's going to go wrong now'. That suspense combined with the great style employed makes for a fantastic piece of work.
Then bang, down to earth in the second half of the book. First we take Manhattan - Dean has become a social rebel, sentenced to twenty years of boredom. The irony of the para-suicide failure due to inadequate gas is a smile during a bleak time in his life. Then Dean is a struggling author, makes a breakthrough and hits the big time. This works towards the long telegraphed reuniting of Theresa and Dean. Strangely he doesn't judge her for her capitalism (sure, love is blind). And that's not the end of the story as he can / will find her again (I was that soldier!). I have a sneaking suspicion that Dean will dump his socialist principles with his new found wealth and have a bit on the side with Theresa.
So, in conclusion, the first half reads like an award-winning romance combined with a realistic development of the harsh realities of life. What a ride!

"Instantly, my old world transformed into a totally different place. A wonderful alien place, saturated with new hope."

Beyond Nostalgia by Tom Winton is smooth and enticing. An engrossing coming-of-age tale that took me right in. We are taken back to a cold April night in 1967 when nothing would ever be the same for this cocky, headstrong eighteen your old boy. This is an endearing love story with a message of new beginnings. And yes, there were some goose-bump moments.

Well written, I dove right into this novel and enjoyed every bit. Emotional, realistic and heart-warming.

In most of the author's books there seems to be a reoccurring theme. The love of writing and telling stories. He shares this dream passionately and with great conviction.

Quote ~

I can no longer bring the feeling back, but I still remember how ecstatic I was waiting for the bus outside Bogart's Bar on Broadway that special night so many years ago. Looking up at the night-time city sky, I saw new stars, brighter stars, more stars than ever before. I even recall the misty stream rising from my mouth as I muttered to the heavens, "God, please, let there be many more nights that I'll wait on this bus stop."

I have done something with this book that I have never done before ....normally I finish a book , I post my review . Not this time - here I am a day late and still not sure I can put my review into words . I decided I would " think " on this one before I typed one word . I am still not done thinking about this book , but I figure I never will be . This is a " forever " book - I will remember it forever !

I'm not so sure it is even a " book " . I think of it as a " story " . I know , I know ...I say toe-may-toe and you say toe-mot-toe . It is a story , not a romance as it has been billed , but more of a fictional memoir if you will .

Written in a memoir-like format by a 43 year old male as he reflects on life from about the age of 17 or 18 on and then brings the story full circle to present day . It's an adult coming-of-age story about a beautiful first love and the lasting effects .

The writing is not particularly poetic , perfect or grand . The characters are not portrayed in some magically deep manner . Yet it is a beautiful story .

It is a perfect story for anyone who has ever experienced a splendid first love and never forgotten it .

I wasn't so sure about this book at first. I kept thinking I wish it would get onto something. Then I realized I was half way through. When I sat back and thought about the story he was telling I understood I was reading about his life. It had to be told that way. IF I was already half way through it must have been good. Without spoiling the ending that is what really did it for me.
This book is about life and the choices we make and the outcomes of those decisions. Did we make them for the right reasons? Did we make them justly?
We all I presume have situations where we wish we decided to go left instead of right. What would our lives have become had we chose differently.
I liked seeing the outcome of one final decision. Who was right? You may wonder at first but the end explains it all. In my opinion one was made selflessly, truthfully and risking it all for the right reasons. The other was selfish and may have laid a path for years to come.
There is most always regret in life but it is what we choose to do with that life that matters and if we let that regret form the rest of our lives.

Young love, is it real, will it last. Dean and Theresa think it is, until Dean breaks her heart.

The sad part is that Dean cannot get Theresa out of his head. Even after, he falls in love and marries, even after, he has children and achieves his dream.

It is twenty-four years later when he finally knows the answer to his questions.

This was a great set up for a real love story, but it soured a little for me but maybe for you it will all be justified in the end. While I found Dean reprehensible at times, I understood the pull of that first love. Will you? Will he make the right decision? All interesting questions that more of us should consider especially if we have a lost love.

I recommend it, simply because it raises some very interesting questions.

This book haunts me.The words he strings together to form more than sentences that open up long restrained emotions as if I was staring into a mirror not being able to look away from a face that was telling truths I did not want to face because they hurt to much.I read about a mans life who is so different to mine,a man who as a person is so unlike me and yet the emotions he describes fit perfectly into vacant slots inside me. Awakening a sadness and also reminding me how lucky I have been in life too.
This book is beautifully written and I feel very lucky to have come across it.Light, sensitively written yet hit me with the impact of a 20lb sledgehanmmer.A book I know I will read over and over again.

A story about a boy becoming a man and his steps and missteps along the way. When D.C. is rescued by a beautiful girl, after getting caught fighting at a school dance he has no idea how it will effect the rest of his life.
Writing in the first person the author brings his characters to life. Mr Winton makes the characters so real that there were times I wanted to hug D.C. and there were times I wanted to slap him.
When it comes to the ultimate decision has Dean matured enough to make the right one.

I received my copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to be picked to read it because I've found a new author to add to my favorites list.

I loved this story. It reads more like a biography than fiction. Dean is a very interesting character with so much heart that the reader can't help but relate to. The author does a great job of explaining what makes Dean who he is. New Yorkers will relate very well to the beginning of the story and the narrative. I could not believe that he carried the torch for Theressa for that long, but he hadn't had closure so that is understandable. Maddy is a lovable character. I would have loved to learn more about Dean's children and what happened his mom and Silvester but that can be in the sequel. I loved the ending of this story. Dean Cassidy finally grows up. Great way to finish a story.

"Beyond Nostalgia" by Tom Winton is a tragic love story about young love and a youthful mistake.
Two strong characters and smooth writing drive the story along as Dean falls for Theresa. Young and stupid Dean loses Theresa but never gets over her.
As simple as the story is, it is very well written and the sentimental and nostalgic tone made this a very beautiful read. The side characters, such as Theresa's mother, are impressive, as is Dean with all his honesty and his flaws.
With a very authentically portrayed setting back in the 1960s the story is well accomplished and worth a read.

Tom Winton is an extremely talented author.
When Dean and Teresa fall in love they think it will last forever...until it doesn't. This story about a young man's regrets is captivating and realistic. No one has lived a life with no regrets but Winton makes you feel what Dean feels as he moves on with his life. Lesson learned...young men make hasty mistakes, real men recognize a mistake when they see one!
I will definitely read more by this author!

Tom Winton. Brilliant.
Beyond Nostalgia.
This book follows the life and times of Dean Cassidy, his youth and his loves.
Reading this book I was finding myself playing the part of Dean. The author describes all the characters so well, and the book just flows from start to finish. You find yourself going through all the emotions, and actually speaking out loud when reading the book. Very highly recommended.

I found this story compelling, poignant and heart-wrenching, with the naivety of teenagers combined with the frustrations adults experience. I was extremely moved and rooting for the main characters, from start to finish. It was not only a great read but a lesson in hope, with some fascinating twists and turns - an excellent book.

I found myself reading this book during odd moments of the day when I should have been doing something else. There was a "calling" to the book that I cannot really explain. I needed to know how it it ended. May not be everyone's "cup of tea" but it was certainly mine. Love lost from a man's POV...Tom Winton did a spectacular job.

Wow.

This book speaks to fears in people's lives. It said to me "go ahead. Love. To hell with the fear. Love anyway. Be the strongest you possible. Cause that love will help to make you strong - whether it works out or not. It'll still help you be the strongest 'you' there ever was cause you took a chance.

The book pulled me in right from the start. Dean Cassidy was your normal guy living in New York in the late 60’s. Then he runs into the love of his life Theresa Wayman. Beautiful, smart and she wants him in her life. All things look great until one night he want to a bachelor party and gets very drunk. This hot chick makes moves on him and despite what he knew was right he made the mistake of following this slut home. He try’s to forget it happen but then he realized he could not lie to Theresa and tells her what happened. Theresa dumps him and makes it clear they are done.
The story goes on with all the negative things life has to throw at him.
He finally meets Mandy falls in loves and marries her. But Theresa is always in the middle of his thoughts.
He finally writes a book which brings him success that has avoid him most of his life. As fate has it it brings Theresa back in his life many years later. I

nothing good.

Story about a kid who is given so much but can't see what all he's got. It's crass, offensive and just stupid. I read as much as I could swallow, then skipped to the end.
