This is great - a good point of view on the Hawaiian healing arts from a modern, practicing kahuna. Gives practical excercises (breathing, visualization, etc) that anybody can do. I'm involved in studying Hawaiian healing arts right now -- the author is native Hawaiian, and these practices were carried on by his family through the ages. He himself was growing away from that way of life and was in law school at the university of HI when he was "called" back to his family's Huna roots. This book is great for any healing arts practioner wanting to add an extra dimension to their work, and also just for those who are seeking personal spiritual devlopment.
Since I wrote the book with the Kahuna Harry Jim, and know what was involved in shaping the amorphos information into a flowing story, I invite others to comment. You are very welcome link to my web site my link text Aloha nui nui.
Although this was a bit more geared toward physical theraputic techniques than I expected, it was still quite interesting...and it had some great tips for how to create a healthier, more relaxing, and more positive approach to life. Simple tips that anyone can do, should they put their mind to it. Very much straightforward and common sense. I tried a couple of the meditation/breathing exercises and, in just a couple days I can see an improvement (sleeping better, less stressed, life's little daily annoyances not getting to me as much). A good thing :) I also liked the idea of "Hawaiian Time," which is different than regular, linear time. With the day-to-day-ness of schedules, it's easy to get caught up. It's good to just sit back and relax now and then and not worry about clocks and meetings and having to be at such-and-such at such-and-such time. It's good to let it be.
Perhaps the only things that could have improved the book is: 1. More in-depth historical information about Kahuna and about the old Hawaiian belief system & way of life. I really would have liked to know more about that. and 2. Fewer testimonials (They started to all sound the same and I found myself skipping over these more often than not as I got deeper into the book).
Overall, though, a this book is a great choice for anyone looking to learn some simple and effective techniques to relax and live better (mentally/spiritually).
