It's hard to go back to fiction adventures after reading this. What a wonderful and perfect outdoors book. Put those wild west fiction novels away and pick this up. Rich in prose so descriptive as to be poetic, often majestic in imagery and style, and masculine in a hard and rare way.
Filled with adventure, history, and information of different native tribes and the author's authentic familiarity with them.
Hmm..it was interesting to see how they lived on the frontier...but, (SPOILER ALERT....): I can sum it up with, he shot a lot of animals, fought a lot of Indians, and loved his dog and had a favorite horse. There is quite a bit of action so it isn't really boring, it just got tiring reading about killing, skinning, camping, hobbling...killing, skinning, camping, hobbling ...FIGHT! Home again... rest...do it all again x5. Whoa! New neighbors!
