In the acclaimed Night Tracker series by New York Times bestselling author Cheyenne McCray, the vampires are back to make a brand new start of it—in old New York…
With zero tolerance for bloodsuckers, Nyx and the Trackers have made the streets safer for warm-blooded New Yorkers. Unfortunately, they didn't drive a stake through the problem nationwide. Vampire attacks are on the rise. Proctors are dropping like flies. And Volod—New York's ousted Master Vampire—is trying to make a comeback…
Nyx is worried—about her city, her job, and her neck. But mostly she's concerned about her former lover, Rodán, a Proctor who's gone missing. Scarier still, Volod is capturing and "turning" paranorms to help him paint the town red. Which sucks. Because some of these new vampires are Nyx's old friends. But hey—if she can stake them here, she'll stake them anywhere…
Cheyenne McCray fell in love with reading and writing early, deciding in kindergarten that one day she would become an author. Today, she is an award-winning New York Times and USA Today bestselling fiction author who’s sold millions of books worldwide. Having published more than 100 novels and novellas in contemporary and paranormal romance, urban fantasy and romantic suspense, she is now also writing cozy mysteries as Deb Ries.
Chey grew up on a ranch in southeastern Arizona and delights in creating stories of suspense, love, and redemption with characters and worlds her readers can get lost in. Chey and her equally geeky husband live with their two dogs, six ducks (the neighborhood celebrities), and a small flock of chickens in a small Arizona town where she enjoys gardening, crazy quilting and, of course, writing.
An example of a series that should have ended one book previously. The last book Zombies Sold Separately would have been a perfect ending with the invasion problem. It's a little anti-climactic to go from a world invasion to a formerly defeated villain come-back. The villain's plan is more effective this time but I can't help commenting that this should have been his plan from the start.
There's nothing more to do but toss this one at books-not-to-be-opened-again corner. It had a nice start but now all I felt was regret at wasteful reading time.
Vampires Dead Ahead is the fifth book in the Night Tracker series which features half-human, half–Drow private investigator Nyx Cair. Cair works paranormal crimes by day and leads an elite special team of Trackers by night. She is teamed up with human Olivia DeSantos who is a former NYPD SWAT officer and wears a different T-shirt extolling the virtues of how she is feeling that day.
Over the past year, Nyx and her Tracker friends have been forced to deal with Demons, Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, and now again, Vampires thanks the reemergence of Volod the master vampire who is the bane of Nyk’s existence. Nyx and crew will end up having to deal with missing trackers and Proctors alike who have disappeared without a clue including their own Rodán.
Volod was thought to have been killed by Nyx and crew in a previous installment but they were obviously wrong. His goal is to make vampires the master race and use humans as a food source and slaves. How? By turning paranormals, and those who stood in his way, into vampires starting with the Proctors (leaders of the peacekeepers aka Trackers), the Paranormal Council, and the Trackers who protect various cities like NYC.
Volod hasn’t forgiven or forgotten Nyx for the part she played in stopping him the first time around. He has made her a prime target for his nefarious schemes. He would love nothing more than to give her the second bite, and turn her into a Paranormal Vampire and control her like a toy soldier and then doing away with once he has met his goals of total world domination by vampires.
While Volod is massing an army of vampires, and paranormal vampires to do his bidding, Nyx and friends are swimming against the stream of time in an attempt to stop Volod from completing his mission. When Nyx finally does understand what is happening, it is almost too late to do anything about it.
Nyx and Colin the dragon have settled into a comfortable relationship now that Adam Boyd has moved on with another woman and is no longer in the picture. So comfortable are they in fact, that she takes him to meet her family off world. This leads to the first ever meeting between Nyx and the Great Guardian whom she has more than once felt was worthless and non-caring to what was going on in the real world. Naturally, the GG gives her a dire warning about blood having to be spilled before the situation is under control. Gee, whose blood do you think will be spilled?
*Thoughts* 1. This story seems to be an ending or a bridge to something else entirely. The way the story ends, as well as the way major characters are killed off (like Nyx’s best friend as well as her former lover who made her a Tracker), makes said reader nervous about the prospects of this series continuing any further.
2. Nyx and Colin’s relationship is different in many aspects from that of Nyx and Adam’s. Colin can actually accept that she turns purple at night, and is a Drow princess who was trained as a warrior. Did you say sex?
3. I am still rather annoyed at the whole Kali the cat destroying her underwear aspect of this series. Sometimes I think the author keys too much on this fact as well as Nyx’s obvious obsession with expensive clothing, shoes, and handbags. Also, normally I love the wise cracking Olivia's antics in support of Nyx. This time around, I found it mostly boring and not necessary to the overall telling of the story.
4. Please explain the 10 days turnaround from the time one is bitten, until they are forced into unburying themselves from their own grave as a newly born vampire. Going back to even Mary Shelley’s time it has always been 3 days, or a shorter variation in the new era of Urban Fantasy. So, again, I ask you, why 10 days?
5. I agree with other readers that Nyx is sometimes TSTL. She ends up rushing blindly into dangerous situations and needs to be rescued time and time again. She nearly ends up dead more times than not, and this time, she walks right into a trap and ends up in Volod’s game. Even with Colin and crew around telling Nyx not to do anything stupid without them; Nyx finds a way, yet again, to get into deep kimchee and pays the price with her mortality and her blood.

I have been wanting to read this book for almost a year now. Now that I have finally finished this series, I can say, that I loved it.
Nyx and her team of Trackers learn of mysterious disappearance of other Trackers in another state of U.S.A. Knowing that that cannot be good, Rodán, her boss and former lover, tells her to head the special team that will investigate these disappearances. Except, he disappears too, less than 24 hours after meeting up with her and the team.
In a race against time, Nyx and her team try to find out what happened to Rodán. On top of that, her sexy fire-breathing dragon, maybe-boyfriend , Colin is there to keep her warm and company.
I loved how her relationship developed with Colin. I hated how hurt she was over the her previous human man. I fell in love with the human too, so it was hurtful reading about him finding someone else in this book. But, while Nyx is cautious, she is ready to move on.
Things happen in this last novel that are explosive!... and irrevocable, as in, can never be taken back, nor changed.
So at the end of the novel, you will find that several people will have changed irrevocably. It is not one of those: wishy washy last-book-in-the-series novel. It is an honest to God, explosive ending to the series.
I'm not sure exactly what I think of this story. I just don't think it is taking the series where it needs to be headed, but that is just my opinion. I will still read the next book. I've been wrong about series before. The author knows where she is planning on taking this story, I do not. I will say that with every story, I like Olivia more. She is a great character. I also like Colin. I hope Nyx will give him a good chance. I think he would be good for her in many ways.
I'm glad that the series is finally over. I was starting to get rather bored with it. Which is saying something when these novels are full of action. But when the plot stays the exact same throughout the series, it starts to get pretty redundant. So even if the characters had a bit of depth to them, it was still all wash away towards the end. Leaving me stranded with high hopes.
Only one good thing actually came from the zombie attacks for Nyx. That’d be seeing her older brother alive and well again. Because after twenty-two years he's finally back where he belongs. Even if in all that time he didn't age, or recognize Nyx for who she truly is. But that's all water under the bridge for her, because she no longer has to suffer the thought of never seen her big brother again. And even though Nyx is as happy as she'll ever be, something is bound to go wrong. For lately that's all she's been able to count on. And this time is no different from the last. So when good Nighttrackers just randomly go missing Nyx knows that something isn't right. It's all but confirmed for her when a well-known Proctor then goes missing as well. Putting most Nighttrackers in a similar state of panic. It's even got Rodán in a tizzy, which is very unlike him. But regardless it has everyone on high alert. Because there's also high evidence that Volod may be back in town to finish what he started. An this time he has his own special army. One that consists of vampiric paranorms and regular vampires alike. A feat that has never been conquered before. An it's currently making Nyx more nervous than she'd like to admit. Because some of the Nighttrackers that were turned were her friends, making this a tough choice for her. However, her decision to go after Volod isn't one at all. Especially, since he went as far as to take Rodán away from her. A mistake that he's going to soon regret. For Nyx has taken it very personal, and its hit a fire under her. A fire that she puts into her orders for the remaining my trackers. Because with Rodán gone, she's now in charge. And she's ready to bring this fight to Volod.
This novel would be classified as an adult urban fantasy novel. One that has a strong female character and a semi-decent plot. For it's a better plot than the last four novels in this series. However, that doesn't take away from all the character aspects that are within it. For these vampires, shifters, fae, dragons, werewolves, and so much more. Making it to where the little bit of romance that's actually in this novel is basically swept under the rug. But in this case it's not a bad thing. Because there was enough of a story to this novel to keep us amused. Leaving me to give my final recommendation for this novel. For while it's not the best novel in the world, it's at least the best novel in this series. So if you really want to read it, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, there's plenty of other excellent novels out there to be read.
Cheyenne McCray's Vampires Dead Ahead was extraordinary! I don't know if this is supposed to be the final Night Trackers Novel or not, I suppose it could go both ways since I haven't found anything out yet on the author's website. Moving on...
This was beyond great! Probably the best Night Trackers Novel ever, truly epic! Nyx is trying to get back to normal after the Zombie attack, it was probably the worst case she ever worked with her dislike of Zombies, but soon that case will look like a piece of cake compared to what is being thrown at her next. Paranorms are being turned into vampires. And not just any paranorms, powerful ones.
Nyx definitely has had a lot of turmoil and hard times in this series, loss of friends, boyfriend and so much more. And it doesn't seem to stop. With every case comes challenges and difficulties, but how Nyx is able to keep moving on, keep moving forward while these things happens, speaks a lot about her character. She is strong. And I admire that about her.
When someone close to Nyx is taken, things go into high danger mode. She will do anything to get Rodan back. Not only is he her former lover, but he is still a great friend. But Volod is out to get Nyx, truly. He despises her along with all other Paranorms and naturally he wants to TAKE OVER THE WORLD! And even though Nyx is walking around with a target on her back, she is still in the thick of things, trying to save the world she loves.
With terrific pacing and a nice dose of romantic scenes, and a touch of scenes to cry over, this book has it all! It has a great balance of all things one expects from a UF novel. Just when you think Nyx and her friends might be getting one step ahead of Volod, they are proven incorrect. That's how exciting this book gets!! I was hooked from the beginning and the ending was fast paced, yet at every turn there is another surprise waiting, be it good or bad!
I liked what seems to be final entry of this unevenly entertaining series. But I’m still finding myself with mixed feelings about it. When the series is good, it’s very good and when it’s not….
Proctors and trackers are missing and it seems the latest member of that elite club is Rodan. During the investigation Nyx discovers Volod has finally resurfaced and is more determined than ever to wreak vengeance on Rodan and Nyx as his schemes for vampires to rule the paranormal world unfold
While I liked the Adam character I’m quite happy he is no longer in couple-hood with Nyx (more juvenile white picket fence dreams and I’d never finish this book). The developing romance with Colin is pleasant, making you want to root for them. This sweet dragon shifter Olivia’s sass and fashion sense still get the best lines. The changes in Nyx are great and she has become an even more powerful Drow, among those new aspects to her are leadership skills and gifts from a witch. The action set pieces were adrenaline charged and gave more than Nyx an opportunity to shine. Angel stepping up to the plate to assist during Rodan’s absence gave the squirrel shifter something to do other than be giggled at when she shifts. Volod’s nefarious scheme endangers the earth otherworld and causes much consternation and gnashing of tracker teeth is both diabolical & simplistic enough to enjoy induction into the villain’s hall of fame. Other characters both new and old had moments that allowed their contributions to be noticeably critical to the denouement giving this installment a sense of finality for the series as did some speechifying. However the ending was ambiguous enough to either be a swan song or a launch pad to new direction for the series. Again, in my opinion, an uneven series to date but often fun nonetheless offering a strong female lead, a variety of paranorms, a hint of romance and enough quirky characters to make it readable.
This installment of the Night Tracker series was kind of intense and a lot changed. I was nearly peeing my pants with all the loss of certain characters. I miss Adam and at the start of the novel where Adam said he found someone else, my heart nearly broke. I loved him as a character but I knew he was weak, he wasn't strong enough for Nyx. As for Collin the dragon, things seem to be working out with them but I don't really care or not care about him as a character. I was sad for the deaths of some of the main characters and I was terrified about what happened to Nyx. Being turned into a vampire might be a good thing for her though. Her human half was weaker but does that also mean she cannot be in the sun cause her human half stabilized her Drow half. There is a lot of questions that went unanswered but hopefully in the next book, we will learn more. I still want more Adam though!
In this novel they face an old enemy and he gets too big for his britches, so Nyx and the other Trackers are going to take him down. It's actually full of action, from one scene to the next. If you are following the series you definitely want to read this book, it's a game changer!

My favorite purple, half-human/Drow tracker, Nyx Ciar, is back. This time she's up against a nemesis she thought was gone. Volod, the master vampire who she came up against in book 3. He is back with a vengence. His goal - to make a master race of hybrid vampire/paranorms and take over the world. When those closest to Nyx start disappearing and turning up vamped, she decides it time to hang Volod out in the sun and let him roast. However, he has other ideas. Nyx destroyed his family and he wants to repay the favor. But not before he collects some very connected paranorms and turns them into one of his minions.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. The constant uncertainty of when Volod would strike and who he would take make this book one of the best in the series. I found myself yelling at the book as one would yell at the screen in the movies - "Don't go in there, Nyx!" I also loved the way Colin and Nyx's relationship developed in this book. He is so the right "dragon" for her.
The big showdown scene at the end of this book was crazy good. I hope there is a next book. Cause I can't wait!
The biggest issue with this book for me was the reoccurring villain, Volod. Cheyenne McCray may as well have re-wrote Vampires Not Invited. Just toss in a new love interest, a somewhat pointless death and there you have it.
As my understanding goes, this is the final book of the Night Tracker series, which is a shame. I wouldn't have minded seeing another book so I could have seen some type of development between Nyx and Colin. I actually really liked Colin. .
Anyways, a shame that she went down the path she did in the final installment. However, if you haven't read the Night Tracker series, and you enjoy adult urban fantasy/paranormal novels, then definitely give it a try. The first book is Demons Not Included.

This was a good book. I think the only problems I have with this series as a whole is the whole we all (as in the reader AND all the characters in the book) see the big problem that needs solving too early in the book and then the rest of the book winds up being "how we're going to solve this" and then a little bit in actually solving. Other than that these books are pretty good.
Having only vague generalities of what happened in the other vampire book (as my library system doesn't carry it) I'm not sure if this would be better or worse to know what happened because not knowing keeps me in a sense of mystery and fill in the blanks of how I think things happened rather than how they did.
I'm not entirely happy with how this book ended up but I am happy in the "good guys won" thing as for once I'm not actually rooting for the "bad guys".
It could be a good stand alone book but it's also good as part of the series and makes more sense as part of the series.
Wow, this one was definitely a thrill ride and while I enjoyed all the drama and bloody battles I do wish that Nyx had a little bit easier of a life. Poor thing. She's always getting beat up (which is usually because she runs headlong into situations without looking) but this time, she really didn't deserve everything that was happening to her.
Throughout the book I kept rooting for Nyx which in the past books I didn't always do. She sometimes had a little bit of that TSTL thing going on, but in this one she was actually going about things the right way and yet the shit still hit the fan. By the end of the book, I did have a positive feeling and I think the next book might start off with Nyx in a good place. Although I'm sure the author will put her through the gimlet again!
Can you treat this as a standalone book? No. I would not even try. There's too many characters and twists from the previous books to make this to where you would feel as if you truly understand the storyline. I would honestly not read this book if you haven't read the others.
Did I like the book? Yes, I did. I am kind of disappointed at some aspects- namely Rodan and Nyx's latest problem. I won't spoil it! But argh, Nyx is like a walking trouble magnet. The woman just can't get a break.
Colin. *sigh* Want an amazing man, erm, dragon. Where can I get one?
I'm sad that this appears to be the last of the series. I've gotten to where I like UF novels almost more than paranormal romance.
I really liked this book, but not sure how I feel about what happens to Nyx. The trip with Colin is to me too similar to having her last vacation with Boyd. I like that this book brings the vampire situation to a close. I think it would have been interesting/ cool if instead of calling the new vamps paranorm vampires to call them vamparas. But I'm silly like that. I did email Cheyenne McCray asking if she plans to continue this series any further (because I really like it) and she said at this time she doesn't have any plans to but may later on. I thought it was really cool that she actually replied :D. I would like to see if Nyx decides to go back home for a while and see how life is in the Drow world now that she has accomplished so much.
This must be the last book in this series. To bad. Nyx is a Drow/human. She is the head of her team of trackers. Trackers hunt vampires and her team is very good at it. When her boss/ex-lover Rodan goes missing she must find him. But it seems her old adversary the master vampire Volod is at it again. He's trying to amass an army to take over earth. With the help of her friends a treamates she must stop Volod before he destroys everything the paranorms have built. We see more of Colin her hot dragon boyfriend. Nyx is up to her neck in evil doings. Will she stop Volod, find Rodan, and still be herself at the end?
I was actually quite surprised that I actually enjoyed reading this last book in the night trackers series. The problem was I quite liked the first one (so I rushed out and bought the others), 2nd wasn't too bad, third one was alright and I didn't really overly like the 4th one, maybe because I HATE zombies! But I enjoyed the storyline and the action and Nyx herself for this one and I didn't want to bang Nyx's face into a wall repeatedly like I did in the other novels. I think that getting rid of Adam was one of the best things to happen. her giggling over him made me want to gag. and I LOVE love. but you gotta admit you wanted to hurt him majorly in the last book, I know I did!
Vampires Dead Ahead (Night Tracker #5) by Cheyenne McCray Nyx is back with all her friends. Unfortunately Master Vampire Volod is back looking for revenge and there is hell to pay. Without giving spoilers I can say that there is a big shake up in Nyx’s world in this book. She loses some old friends and makes some new ones. Despite all of that I think that this may be the best in this series to date.
I read these books and thought the series was alright but not amazing. Honestly in this last book all I could think was if there was another best friend (to kill off) would have probably been another book. As to Rodan's ending, guess we couldn't come up with a happy ending so will just get rid of him. I was pretty disappointed at the abrupt ending to the series. Sorry wish I could have said I loved it.
I'm really waffling on a rating for this (it's either a two-star or a three-star). There were events in the book that I thought were either at odds with the general campy tone or weren't handled with convincing emotional depth. Kind of contradictory, right? That's why I haven't written a full review...yet.
I really enjoyed the book, it was a good fast paced read that kept me interested and turning the pages. The heroine was likeable and you wanted her to achieve her goals in the end. The only problem I had was it was part of a series and I'd not read the first book so it took me about fifty pages to figure some things out, other than that I would recommend it highly
Yep it's what I thought it would be. My emotions were allover while reading this book. It was a great read. Many things happened to Nyx that were heartbreaking but as usual she gets thru it and kick some vampire ass. Loved the book.
I have mixed feelings about this book, unfortunately it might be my least favorite of the series. It doesnt mean I didnt like it, but it was just a bit of a bummer. Will still stick with the series if there are more to come. The parts with Olivia are probably the best, she is a great character.
