The first book I ever got for my nephew and he L O V E S it! 😭💗 We've read it about 100909090 times together and as expected, his favorite is the OWL! 🦉💗
I put this book on my baby registry expecting it to be durable in the hands of an infant/toddler, as well as audibly stimulating with the crinkly material between the layers of fabric.
I did not, however, expect the beautiful colors or the well-structured cadence of the writing when read out loud. My son is only 3 months old but he easily interacts with the book and I can read him the "story" and help him turn the pages while he enjoys the crinkly sounds - and the funny way the fabric tastes, let's be honest about how infants explore books!
I'm so glad I ordered this book for my son. I can already tell it's going to become a favorite daily toy for a while, until he graduates to board books.
This book has a good balance of suspense and character development. Similar to Seth's "The Golden Gate," the poetic form adds a unique and moving touch ("Who built this dam? / What an achiever!")
Peek-a-boo forest is a modern day mystery about what animals are behind a variety of forest objects such as trees and logs. Just when you’re on the edge of your seat wondering what’s behind the log down there, you unveil the mystery and woah, it’s the bear!
The one literary critique I have of the book is that the author assumes too much of the reader. By his or her use of the definite article “the” the author comes across as a little snobbish, as though they are revealing a particular bear that the reader should know about, rather than generically “a bear”.
Overall it was a solid read and my daughter loved it.

My dad grew up in Montana, so having a book that rhymes "spruce" and "moose" on the first page feels right for our household. But even if you don't spend much time in forests or parks, this is a nice example of a soft, crinkly, squishy book with happy, cheerful illustrations to have around for babies. Before mine was old enough to lift (and rip) paper flaps, this helped introduce the idea of peek-a-boo, and she still grabs it from time to time now at 14 months.
Durable! Our bedtime book from 2 to 8 months and "Mr Owl" on the cover is an all time favorite chew toy.
I wish the interactive points were not all designed for right handed play (All "peek-a-boo" panels are in the lower right hand corner). To encourage development of both sides of the brain for hand eye coordination it would have been great to alternate the positions. To get around this we usually look at a single page at a time instead of holding the book "open" to show the full scene.
My 4.5-month-old son loves this one! Now that he's able to grab things, he loves to help turn the pages and pull down the flaps. He also loves the soft owl's head on the front cover. The crinkles are great, and because it's cloth, he can chew on it and fling it around. I love the rhymes and rhythms of this book, something I'm sure he'll grow to appreciate in time. And my favorite part is that my favorite animal, the beaver, is included!
This is easily the most Canadian book I've ever read. That doesn't really take a lot of doing, but a cloth book that reveals hidden animals including a moose, a family of bears, a raccoon and a beaver is positively screaming out "I'm Canadian, eh?"
This is a nice book for a baby, and one of the first that our little girl actually brings over to me, and sits on my lap - voluntarily - while we go through it. It makes a nice crinkling sound, and the big cloth flaps are so big and accessible that the little girl's clumsy fingers have no trouble locating the edges and flipping them down, across or whatever.
Much better than the few other soft books we picked up. Colorful, repetitive, rhyming, and each flap that loved crinkly noise. They give you enough to ease into it for younger kids and enough to talk about as they get older.
My only issues are very, very minor ones- the picture of the bear shows three bears. Yet the noun used is singular. The start of each sentence isn't capitalized. Also the last page breaks the pattern ending in an exclamation and not a question.
Again, minor and can be used in conversation to seek out patterns.
The entirety of words contained in this book could likely fit within a Twitter status update, however for very young children this book is a lot of fun. At 7 1/2 weeks our son is beginning to truly enjoy this book. Each animal is hidden behind a crinkly cloth object (bush, beaver dam, tree leaf) and the rhymes are simple and fun to read aloud in a sing song voice.
This isn't high quality literature, but to entertain and teach animals to small children, this book is a lot of fun.
This was actually pretty decent for a cloth activity book. The text is fun and the rhyming is creative (although prowl and owl just seems a bit flatter than the others). The illustrations are rather ho-hum with simple, childish shapes and bold colors but I do like the changing color schemes of spreads over the course of the book.
I bought this for my son as I was looking for some nice cloth books he could play with but also read. He loves the crinkly pages and playing peek-a-boo to see the animals that are hidden on each page. Nice bright colours with simple rhymes and big flaps! If it gets dirty, just throw it in the wash on a gentle cycle and it comes out good as new.
I added this book to the goodreads database because it has frequently kept our baby boy from meltdown when he's been teetering on the edge. He enjoys pulling open the soft cloth flip-ups to reveal the animals. Uninspiring text and rhymes, but a book I wouldn't want to be without.
Gabe's always liked this book. He likes the illustrations of the friendly animals (and moon), the rhyme, and, now that's he's a bit older, the crinkly sound the flaps make.
A great first book! We read it over and over again when my daughter was an infant. It is soft, colorful and interactive. She loved moving the flaps to see what is beneath. Highly recommended!
