Gabriela Swanson wanted one thing, to be a well known writer at Graven, the most prestigious Goth magazine in the country. When an inside source gives her the opportunity of a lifetime, she finds herself in a hostage situation with a man who claims to be her soul mate.
Kane Barringer is a vampire who's lived for centuries. Every century is spent waiting for his soul mate, but this time he's vowed to live the rest of his existence without her. A strange twist of fate gives them the opportunity to be together forever, but will Gabriela embrace it?
I'm the oldest of three girls. I was raised by my grandparents (my mother's parents) and have to admit I had a pretty spoiled childhood. We were in no way, shape, or form wealthy. No my grandparents worked every single day to make sure my sisters and I had the things we needed, as well as a few extras.
My mother, well I could write a book just about my life in trying to deal with her. Let's just simply say she has a LOT of problems and even though I had the love and devotion of her parents, I grew up pretty fast. It wasn't that I didn't have a childhood, because I did, I just had to deal with things that most of the other kids around me never knew about.
All that is in the past though.
Now I am a wife and mom of three, two boys and a girl. My oldest is getting ready to graduate kindergarten and it amazes me each and every single day how much he is growing up already. The twins, well they are an adventure themselves! I am hoping for preschool next year, crossing fingers they get accepted.
People always ask, how do you find time to sit and write with three kids? It's actually really easy. My hubby works a second shift job so after 8pm when the kids are all tucked in for the night, I sit down here at the computer and type away. I get a good three hours each night of uninterrupted writing time :)
Gabriela is as curious as a cat when it comes to the paranormal world. She aspires in her career to become a writer at Graven magazine for the purpose of exposing the things that go bump in the night are in fact real and may even walk among us. Her innate curiosity further proves dangerous when she decides to meet a witness to a murder with otherworldly connections, but instead she herself is thrust into an existence that at times is hard to believe is real yet hard to ignore. Her life is suddenly shifted and although she can't help feeling that this is the right path, she may not be prepared for the undertaking.
Kane vowed that he wouldn't do what he has done many times over when it came to the love of his immortal life. His determination to stay away meets a fateful end when he sent out on a hunt for a dangerous vampire that threatens his and others' existence. Now he has no choice but to see to the safety of the one who continuously gets away. He can't lose her again, but the question remains will she join him finally in his everlasting life?
The story is told from Gabriela's point of view, which leaves a shroud of mystery among the other characters and allows the reader to experience everything first hand, as Gabriela does. Her easy acceptance of the paranormal in the beginning was a bit unbelievable as she throws herself into every situation first and then asks questions and makes demands later. There were welcome moments of intimacy between Gabriela and Kane, but it felt lacking the heat that I was expecting from two characters that are rediscovering this legendary love between them. Kane is desirably mysterious, but not without flaws so his character is more relatable. The rest of the cast are engaging with accents and personalities that are hard to miss. The plot is absorbing with a rapid pace from beginning to end and has definite series potential. Paranormal fans looking for a little time transcending romance, will want to check out this story.

Are you a big fan of vampires? *raises hand* I am. Huge fan, massive even. It all started when I was a wee lass and saw Interview with the Vampire for the first time. I still remember it fondly. So anytime I can read a vampire anything, I'm all for it. But, because so many books have been written about them, you have to bring something new to the table, or make a character so intriguing, so lovable that you don't care that its the same old song and dance. And I think we found both in this book.
Kane is such an awesome character, because he's not the perfect romance hero. He's flawed and makes really bad decisions. Then there is Gabriela, who I have to say is fantastic. She gets a ton information dumped on her in a rather short amount of time and takes it like any other normal person would but yet still manages to keep herself from getting lost or swept away in all the craziness that is Kane's world.
But what I enjoyed most about this book was the storyline itself. The never ending love story that revolves around this magically gifted necklace. It's a great twist on a normal love story and then add vampires and other paranormal elements and you know what you get? A very happy reader.

The book moved at a quick pace but at a rate where readers were still able to follow the plot. I gave this book a rating of 4 instead of a 5 because of the reminiscent factor. I feel that maybe Ms. Yeakle could have made this story a little less like all the other vampire/human love stories out there. It was only a 3 for the heat level because there could have been a little more steamier love scenes, they were on the tame side. Though I found the book to be reminiscent of a few vampire books, Ms Yeakle is a talented writer and I would definitely recommend her books to fellow readers.
