Mandie and her friends set out to investigate and solve six more mysteries in the next two volumes of THE MANDIE COLLECTION. Volume Ten includes Mandie and the New York Secret, Mandie and the NIght Thief, and Mandie and the HIdden Past.
Lois Gladys Leppard was the author of the Mandie series of children's novels. Leppard wrote her first Mandie story when she was only eleven and a half years old, but did not become a professional author until she was an adult. Leppard has also worked as a professional singer, actress, and playwright. At one time, she and her two sisters, Sybil and Louise, formed a singing group called the Larke Sisters. There are forty Mandie books in the main series, an eight-book junior series and several other titles. Leppard said that she could write a Mandie book in two weeks, barring any interruptions. The eponymous heroine lives in North Carolina in the early 1900s, encountering adventure and solving mysteries with help from her friends, family, and pet cat, Snowball. These young reader novels are meant to teach morals as well as be fun and captivating stories to read. Leppard stated that her books contain "nothing occult or vulgar", and Mandie is depicted as a faithful Christian. The Mandie books often deal with issues of discrimination and prejudice relating to race (particularly with regard to the local Cherokee), class, and disability. Lois Gladys Leppard based some of the incidents in her Mandie books on her mother's experiences growing up in North Carolina. The dedication in the first book is: "For My Mother, Bessie A. Wilson Leppard, and In Memory of Her Sister, Lillie Margaret Ann Wilson Frady, Orphans of North Carolina Who Outgrew the Sufferings of Childhood".
This book contains three mysteries taking place the summer before Mandie’s last year of school before college. With her friends, Maddie uncovers mysteries at the homes of her friends in New York and Charleston as well as at home. Mandie is older now and seeks to be more independent. Her stubbornness has her in conflict even with her beloved Uncle Ned.
The mysteries of the earliest books do seem to have more depth. Still, reading about these characters is like getting re-acquainted with old friends.
I read the first Mandie books to my kids when they were young. We enjoyed the characters, setting and the mysteries the feisty Mandie got involved with. These are excellent books for the whole family to enjoy together.

Maria's Note: Hi! I'm Maria, and I'm adding a new feature to my review- Maria's note. In a Maria's note, I share news, special thoughts, etc. Sorta like a blog, except since I'm not a author, I can't have a blog on Goodreads. Here's our Maria's note for this time: It's been awhile since I have done a review! Why? Because I have been working on a long, long book- Mandie Collection 10! Did I like it? Let's see.......
Review: I have been a longtime reader of Mandie. I was about 7, 8 when I started reading her! I really liked her then, but now since I'm almost 12, I was wondering if I would like her the same or what. So, I gave it a whirl. Plot: This is actually 3 books jammed into one. Book One-Mandie and The New York Secret. Mandie gets a message from her friend Jonathan that he's discovered a secret. She can't wait to find out what it is! Surely there's a clue somewhere....... Book Two- Mandie and The Night Thief. Mandie's precious locket gets stolen! Plus, Tommy's sister Josephine is up to something suspicious. Can Mandie solve the mystery in time? Book Three- Mandie and The Hidden Past. There's a crack in the secret tunnel below Mandie's house. She is determined to figure out if there is a mystery behind it! Positive Content: This had good Christian morals and fairly good mystery. Again, I loved it as a little girl. Negative content: I just couldn't get into it his time. It wasn't fast moving, exciting enough. Mandie seemed to be making a big deal out of nothing. I mean, a crack in a wall isn't really a mystery. I have seen many a crack in a wall before, and not thought "ooh, there's a crack! I'm sure it's some huge mystery!" Mandie seemed to have a perfect life- tons of friends, family, rich living conditions, vacations almost every month, and coffee and cake 3 times a day or whenever they wanted. The mysteries were too unrealistic. I have been around 11 years and never run into a mystery in my life, and Mandie gets to solve good ones every week. It's just unrealistic. mysteries are actually very uncommon. Conclusion: I wish i could get into these again, but alas.....
