The Desolate World

Desolation took everything from them.

But can it take their hope for love?

Novah Harper has lived through the worst nineteen years in the history of humankind. She wouldn't actually call it living. Her guilt from her parents' death and her fear of loss smother any real chance at happiness. But everything changes when the man she cares for returns to camp, offering her a second chance at love. Now she must choose between dwelling on her past mistakes or fighting for her future. Both choices are dangerous.

Rebuilding a new world and government system should be the first thing on Beck Haslett's mind. Instead, he can't stop thinking about tearing down the walls around Novah's heart. Things would go smoother if his worst enemy wasn't also her overbearing brother, who would stop at nothing to keep them apart. But time's running out. Beck must win Novah's love before he leaves to establish a new kingdom. If he doesn't, he'll be forced to live without her.

Building a new world from the ground up just might be easier than building a love that can withstand Desolation.

The Desolate World is a companion novel that goes along with The Desolation Series. This companion novel is best read AFTER you've read the other four books in the series. It's not recommended to start with this book.

Kortney graduated from the University of Utah with an English degree and spent a few years before motherhood teaching 7th and 8th graders how to write a book report, among other things. But after a reading slump, where no plots seemed to satisfy, Kortney pulled out her laptop and started writing the "perfect" love story...or at least she tried. Writing love stories is her job...just kidding. Her real job is taking care of her five awesome kids and spending time with her husband.

Kortney loves a good romance movie or book, warm chocolate chip cookies, and traveling the world.

'When a person gets close to the end, they think about the past--the journey that got them where they are.'

The Desolate World

A companion story to a beloved book series? Yes, please!

A companion story to anything associated with Kortney Keisel? Double YES!

Here is what I loved about The Desolate World:

1) The love story.

Kortney's characters are always so much fun. This has kind of a trope mash up of forbidden love (think Romeo and Juliet-but without the dying), unrequited love, grumpy/sunshine, and my personal favorite - second chance romance :)

2) Banter.

One of Kortney's writing strengths is her banter. HERE FOR IT! Beck is hilarious. He has a patient, easy going, there for you kind of personality and his dialogue completely reflects that! He's flirty but still has substance to his character. You'll be a big fan of his. Novah doesn't let a lot pass through at first glance, her character arc is the priority in this book and every chapter made cheer more and more for her.

3) The History

I LOVED getting the back story behind everything we've read and loved in books 1-4! I don't want to share too much because it is a journey that you're not going to want to miss!!!

How It All Started

This is a tale of how everything got re-started, how the kingdom's came to be and how love began. After reading all the previous books, this was a great look into the past. Tragic too. Maybe a bit frightening if you think on it too long. But don't. Focus on the love and hope instead. This is a great addition to this series.

4.5⭐

I couldn't put this down. It's recommended you read the other books in the series and then this one. The way it was written was amazing! It was like putting a jigsaw together, it pieced together so well and set the foundation for the other books.

I absolutely loved Beck - he had 0 flaws. His determination, pining, charm was perfection. Hewson was the VILLAN in this. Completely unbearable. I felt sorry for Novah - dealing with guilt and trying to experience love secretly whilst pleasing her brother. BUT the romance in this was so swoony!

I love the Desolation series, so when Kortney Keisel announced the surprise release of The Desolate World, I was thrilled!

It was great to spend more time in this world through this story. I love how it takes place years before the other books so the reader can see how the Council of Essentials is formed and how the new countries were chosen.

Novah and Beck are great characters, and I loved seeing them together! The format of the story is such that the reader is shown their past relationship, as well as their current circumstances, and I appreciated having a full picture of what happened in their story. I had a hard time putting this story down, and I read most of it in one sitting!

I loved reading this book, and I can’t wait to read whatever Kortney Keisel publishes next!

I thought this book was so well written and showed how its important to work together in times of distress and put all opinions aside to survive. The love story in this book was beautiful and has you on the edge of your seat the whole book. One thing I think would have been great in the book is at the end have a lineage or a family tree leading to the characters in the other 4 books and who they end up being related to. As someone who also adored that series and the characters I kept trying to match up who belonged to which family and it got me a little confused trying to match them up. I loved how Beck showed Novah how strong she really is despite her brothers opinions. I think it’s so powerful because this book maybe an eye opener for a lot of people feeling the same way. I loved this book and treasured every page! I also loved the alternate ending that we got to read. Thank you Kourtney for giving us a piece of your thought process for this book!

I was so surprised and ecstatic to see a new book in The Desolation series! And it did not disappoint!

I loved going back in time and getting some background information on how it all started, how the kingdoms came to be formed and named! And, of course, I loved the love story between Beck and Novah!

Beck was such a bright light in such a dark and dreary time! He was the perfect compliment to Novah and just the sunshine she needed! I enjoyed the flashbacks that gave more insight into their relationship and was so happy that, despite Hewson and his over protectiveness of Novah, they were able to have the love they both deserved!

Kortney Keisel is an instant-read author for me. I love her writing style and character development. I’ve read all of her other books; this was the only one I hadn’t read yet. I’ve started and stopped it a few times because I found it harder to get into. The characters were decent. I also enjoyed seeing how the world came together for her “Desolation” books. It just wasn’t as entertaining and fun as her other books, but it was still fine.

📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚
THE DESOLATE WORLD by @authorkortneykeisel

A NEW DESOLATION BOOK!!!

Where do I even start?! How about the beginning:

YA Dystopian Romance: I kept saying “not my jam”. But everyone was freaking out about how good they were, so I caved and read them. I devoured the entire series and I’ve sung their praises to anyone who would listen ever since!!

When Kortney secretly told me about this book and sent a copy a few weeks ago I thought my heart would stop… or burst… whichever shows the most excitement!!

Novah is not a typical heroine to me. She has a strength, but it’s hidden so deep she doesn’t even see it. She feels like she has very little to contribute to a world that is trying to build back up from literally nothing. Beck sees though it. He sees her for who she is immediately and sets out to make her see it and feel it. Their biggest obstacle is Novahs power hungry and overbearing brother, Hewson, who will do anything to keep them apart.

That’s all I want to say about the story. I want it to unfurl for you in your own way, but, I will say this…

There are EASTER EGGS in this book for every one of the Dystopian books!!! (can I say that now, Kortney? Oh well - too late 🤷🏻‍♀️) I absolutely ❤️ that connection between this book and the 4 book series. So, read this book, then notice the Easter Eggs when you read the others, or read the others and come find the Easter Eggs in this book. Makes no difference as long as you read them all!!!

Those who only know Kortney for her Rom”COM” series might worry this book won’t carry they same writing strengths we all love in her. No worries!!!! This book has all the banter, flirtation, story line, sizzling chemistry/kisses, and heart that make us love Kortney Books.

The corner of his mouth hitched upward even higher. “Beck Haslett.” He extended his hand out, waiting for her to shake it.
“Novah Harper.” Her fingers slowly brushed against his. Calluses covered his skin, but the warmness from his touch felt as good as the hot sun on her skin.
Beck’s hazel eyes glimmered. “Well, Novah Harper, I’m starting to think coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
She dropped his hand, folding her arms across her chest. “You’ll be safe here.” That’s what she told every newcomer when they arrived. She didn’t know if she believed it, but she was still alive, so she supposed it was true.
The glimmer in his gaze flared again. “I’m not sure my heart will be safe.”

The butterflies slowly drifting through her stomach were a direct contradiction to everything she’d felt as an adult-a misplaced emotions that felt foreign. Is that what it felt like to be hit on?

“I like your laugh. You should do it more.”
She rolled her lips together. Her eyes met his, and her stomach turned over. “There hasn’t been anything to laugh about.”
“I’d like to change that.”

While he was gone, she had tormented his thoughts. He thought he’d gotten to a point where he could let her go and move on with his life. But as the year stretched on, and as they got closer to camp, his heart had convinced his head to try one last time. He was back, and he didn’t want Novah to be just a thought. He wanted her to be a real part of his life. She was worth the extra effort and the heartache that might come with it.

“I wouldn’t count me out just yet,” Beck said. “I’m never out of anything.”
He wasn’t only referring to the rebuild. He was talking about Novah, too.

“I don’t care about being the somebody in history.” He took a step forward. “But I do care about being somebody to you.”

Novah was essential to his survival.

His head tilted toward the sky. “People used to have stars and galaxies named after the ones they loved. But not me. I name kingdoms.”

“I hope your proposal is one of the greatest moments in your life. When the man who loves you the most in the world asks you to be his, it’s magical.”

He needed every second he could get to soften Novah.
Because he wasn’t leaving for New Hope without her.
She was essential to him.

Love was torture and euphoria combined-a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions that made her sick one moment and then full of exhilaration the next.

Desolation took everything from them.
But can it take their hope for love?
Novah Harper has lived through the worst nineteen years in the history of humankind. She wouldn’t actually call it living. Her guilt from her parents’ death and her fear of loss smother any real chance at happiness. But everything changes when the man she cares for returns to camp, offering her a second chance of love. Now she must choose between dwelling on her past mistakes or fighting for her future. Both choices are dangerous.
Rebuilding a new world and government system should be the first thing on Best Haslett’s mind. Instead, he can’t stop thinking about tearing down the walls around Novah’s heart. Things would go smoother if his worst enemy wasn’t also her overbearing brother, who would stop at nothing to keep them apart. But time’s running out. Beck must win Novah’s love before he leaves to establish a new kingdom. If he doesn’t he’ll be forced to live without her.
Building a new world from the ground up just might be easier than building a love that cna withstand Desolation.

This story, The Desolate World, is a companion novel that goes along with The Desolation Series. It’s best to read after you read the other four books in the series. I love this book. Just like I did with the other four books in the series. Kortney Keisel has a power, a power of writing. I have loved every book that she has written. I love how Beck was determined not only to build a new kingdom but also to win Novah’s heart. The relationship between Noavah and her brother, Hewson, hurt my heart especially at the end. I loved seeing how the kingdoms were made and who were the first leaders for those kingdoms. 5 stars.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: dystopian romance
Content: makeouts, some innuendo, talk of lingerie (in a humorous way), grief from prior loss of family members

It’s been literal years since I read the Desolation series so it took me a minute to get back into that frame of mind…but once I did, I wanted to keep going and figure out how this story worked itself out!

I really liked the way Kortney told the story in two timelines— present day plus some flashbacks to the past (be that a decade ago or just 18 months).

I loved Beck and Novah together. I especially loved the way that Beck helped Novah to see how capable she was.

I had issues 😠 with Hewson, Novah’s older brother. It was so maddening to watch him talk down to Novah like she was stupid and to see the way that he clipped her wings by making her feel that because of her disabled foot, she couldn’t contribute. Beck’s encouragement of her was such a beautiful juxtaposition to that.

I’m super glad I don’t have to live in a crazy world like theirs! Pretty sure I wouldn’t make it 😅

😃 "It's so much more rewarding when you finally get a smile from someone who doesn't give them away easily."

🫠 You're the somebody in history that everyone will talk about years from now."
"I don't care about being the somebody in history." He took a step forward "But I do care about being somebody to you."

❤️ “I can't promise that you won't ever lose me, but isn't it worth the risk?" His lips lifted. "Isn't time together—no matter how long or short—worth the risk of losing your loved ones?

😍 “I know now that my heart is the safest with you. You're the reason I even believe in love. I thought life was only about hurt and anguish, but then you came along and brightened everything up. You've allowed me to hope again, and I love you for that." "I love you, too." He smiled. "I've always loved you. Since the moment I met you, I haven't been able to get you out of my heart. It's only ever been you."

••I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

-Just when I thought I had read all of the dear books in the Desolation Series, I was thrilled to discover that The Desolate World, is a companion novel that goes along wonderfully with The Desolation Series. For sure, this dear story is best read AFTER you’ve read the other four awesome books in the series!

-The Desolation World, is a YA dystopian story filled with a twist of forbidden love, unrequited love, grumpy/sunshine, and second chance romance. I thoroughly enjoyed getting the back story behind everything I read and loved in books 1-4! Be prepared for another unforgettable journey with shocking plot twists and swoony moments that had my heart. I loved watching characters face hard obstacles, rise above fears, and at the timely tender moments show such strength from within. Watching other characters see through layers to piece together the other’s hearts and risk everything for love despite close relative’s power hungry, overbearing opinions had my heart. My friends, do not miss out on this fantastic series! It’s love, goodness, strength, and hope that are weaved beautifully within that beautifully shine through each story! Worth the read!💯

“You’re my answer. You and I are meant for each other. We both survived the craziness of the last seventeen years so we could create an epic love story. I survived all those hard things so l could love you.”

DO YOU LOVE THE DESOLATION SERIES? Welp.... Do you want to know how it all started?!? READ THIS BOOK!

Synopsis: The world has fallen apart around her.... her parents are dead and all she has left is her brother, but will she be able to overcome the trials and find the positive in the miserable world that surrounds her? Maybe?!? But not without the help of others and "New Hope".

Review: Y'all this book is fantastic! I love how it answered so many more of my questions of how Post-Desolation Kingdoms came to be. I loved the flashbacks, and the second chance romance. I loved the character arc and the back story of Novah Harper..... how she survived and thrived through the worst of times. I enjoyed the imagery that was created through different catastrophic earth events, and I just overly enjoyed this book and could not put it down.

I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys life utopian fantasy with amazing romance!!

Romance: Clean and steamy kissing Only:)
Content Warning: Literal World Desolation (Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Bombs, and so much more)

"It's recommended that you not start with this book..."
Oops.

I saw this book on a rec list on Instagram and saw it had several things I love. I actually do not usually love dystopian stuff, but this one kept my interest and the romance was quite lovely.
Our FMC keeps things close and can't risk opening herself to affection for fear of losing those she loves. Add to that a brother that keeps her under his heavy handed thumb, and a MMC that is a complete cinnamon roll, and she's in trouble! This doesn't even cover the fact that the entire world is in shambles and they are barely surviving.

The reason I didn't give this 5 stars, was I thought a spoiler-y decision from the brother was a little out of character. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book! I normally don't like too many POVs or flashbacks--this had both, but it was done really well. I am now looking into her other novels!

Oh, Desolation series. I am so happy to revisit you. Beck and Novah, you are one of my top 5 Desolation series couples. 😉😅 You're opposites play so well and I adore it. Also, for how in love with this series I am, I am surprised at how many questions I didn't have about how it all started, but no fear, those are answered now!

If you like star-crossed lovers, opposites attract, history, (not REAL history, Desolation history. Which really, is better) banter, flashbacks, Easter eggs, Desolation series and a couple to root for, definitely read this one!

My own opinion- this is such a fun read but made even more fun if you've read the rest of the series. My order rec is The Promised Prince, The Stolen Princess, The Rejected King, The Forgotten Queen, and then The Desolate World. But, you do you, boo.

Thanks for letting me read beta read this one. All opinions are my own.

The Desolation Series is by far my favorite dystopian series. The Desolate World was the perfect prequel!

Beck and Nova // one views life as a glass have full and the other views life as a glass half empty // 🌎

In the aftermath of nuclear wars and natural disasters of all kinds, North America is not as it once was // with survivors being found from all over, a new world and government is needed // but the most important question the council has to answer is, what is essential for mankind’s survival?

I loved returning to this world // I loved Beck’s optimism // I loved the diary // I loved the brown couch // I loved multiple perspectives and flashbacks // I loved the Council of Essentials // I loved the white flowers // 🏞️

If you haven’t read the desolation series, I highly recommend you do // Kortney Keisel doesn’t disappoint // 💃

Ahhh I love the Desolation Series so much and it was so fun to be back in that world!

This was an awesome companion/prequel novel to the series!

For those that have read the series, there are soo many fun Easter Eggs!! That was definitely one of my favorite parts of reading this- making all the connections to the other books!

Even though this book describes what is happening "in the beginning"/how the country and Council of Essentials originally came to be.. personally I would highly suggest reading the series first, THEN reading this book!

BECK🥰 loved him!! What can I say, I loooove a funny, flirty MMC!!
Beck and Novah are great for each other!
Their story is:
•Second-chance
•He falls first
•reverse grumpy-sunshine
•closed-door romance

Wow, I loved this book!! 😍😭 The Desolation series was amazing and so I was excited to read this companion novel about what the actual desolation was like. It was sad and scary and heartbreaking, but The Desolate World is about survivors picking themselves back up and rebuilding the world. I loved seeing the process of how everything came together, and Novah and Beck’s relationship was so sweet and wonderful! He brought light to a dark time and helped Novah find herself again. I absolutely adored this book and read it all in one day!! It’s completely clean besides one single cuss word I found, and is so beautiful!! 😍

I have loved every book of the Desolation series and this was no exception! It was so cool to see where it all started. I loved all the little Easter eggs and seeing how each kingdom came to be. This book was a bit darker than the other books in the series but I didn't mind that at all, it's what the story called for. I loved Beck's fun and flirtatious personality and how he always saw the best in Novah. My heart hurt for Novah through most of this story but I loved her progression and how everything came together in the end. If you enjoy dystopian romance, definitely give this book a read!

First things first - isn't this cover amazing?! I love it.

Next things next - Kortney Keisel has written another winner, y'all. The story inside the cover is just as amazing as the cover itself. This is one of my most favorite books I've read this year.

I loved being back in the Desolation series!! It was so fun to see all the little ways this story connected to the rest of the series, and to see the whole process of how the survivors of the Desolation went about rebuilding after all the destruction that happened.

Also, Beck and Novah were the cutest. They had the sweetest second chance romance and I loved how they brought out the best in each other. Beck was the perfect amount of sunshine to Novah's grumpiness. Also, Hewson deserved a good swift kick to the shins for being such a jerk for 98% of the book.

Basically, y'all need this book in your life. Trust me friends. It's a winner. #ihavespoken

4.25 ⭐ I loved getting to see how they rebuilt everything after Desolation. I do wish we got a bit more though. Novah got annoying at some times when she didn't stick up for herself but when she was with Beck she was so much happier and such a better character. Also Hewson sucked and I get he was the "villain" but overall he just wasn't a good character. BUT Beck was amazing throughout the whole book. The best part in this book was the romance it was so sweet and I loved how Beck just makes Novah happy and feel good about herself. And I loved the ending.

Prequel

This was an interesting prequel. But it did feel like an afterthought. There is a lot of focus on negativity. Her brother is a jerk. She pushes love away to protect herself from loss. Then there is a complete 180 and the last couple chapters feel very rushed.
I liked it, and I'm glad to have the information about how the council of essentials started, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of the series.

3.75⭐ (I'd round to 4.5 solely for beck, but won't haha 😏)

I loved learning about how the countries came to be, it was very interesting!!!

I hated hewson, with a passion. HE MADE ME SO MAD. but....

I LOVED BECK. What a kind man that novah honestly didn't deserve.

This was a sweet romance, but felt kinda rushed at the end. AND STOPPED as soon as the good stuff started. I wanted more of them together instead of at odds!!!!

Loved this story. I would recommend reading the series before this book. Just because it pieces together the kingdoms & a little backstory on how it all came about!

The characters in this story have my heart.

A story of loss, forbearance, and pure LOVE. My heart aches. This author is amazing. I will NEVER be over this series. ❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thought the story of the world’s desolation was interesting. I loved Beck’s character a lot and felt for Novah’s guilt and sadness. I think Hewson’s hate was a bit extreme and got annoying. I liked the flashbacks that helped explain Beck and Novah’s relationship when the present interactions would not have been enough to get them together to such a deep point. The love story was sweet.

Interesting story

The multiple reasons for the demise of this world made it believeable. The characters were well flushed out, and I highly enjoyed the story.

One thing that bothered me was the dream sequences. It was hard to follow at first, but eventually, I got used to it.

Overall, I'd recommend this book.
