Prva zbirka pesama “Djulici” nastala je tokom njegovog srecnog porodicnog zivota, a niz elegicnih pesama “Djulici uveoci” napisao je posle porodicne tragedije.
This book is simply a masterpiece. It is a collection of poems by a man living in the balkans in the 19th century. The book is made out of two parts, first part is "Roses" and the second is "Wilted Roses".
The poems start off being full of yearning and describing his loneliness. Then it is about meeting his wife Ruza (ruza means rose, and throughout many poems he is talking about roses and flowers). Then the poems are about how happy they are, about their children and more about her in general.
The second part of the book starts, the second part is called "Wilted Roses". In the second part he is describing in real time his entire family dying. His children and wife got tuberculosis and eventually died. He was a doctor and there was nothing he could do to save them, he just kept writing about one after the other dying.
He also described in most painful detail the guilt of being a lone survivor, he often wrote about a "blurry world" and the way people around him are still living in their own realities, meanwhile he is just moving through the motions, his world has left him all alone. He went on to write poems and stories for children until he died. He is still remembered in Serbia and we learn about his poems in school, also many of children's songs have his poems as lyrics.
The book is called "Roses and Wilted Roses" if you translate it directly from serbian to english and that is so tragic and fitting. I hope he found his rose and their children in the afterlife.
