About the author

Prudencio De Pereda published his first story in 1936 and met Hemingway during the Spanish Civil War. The two collaborated on a couple of film commentaries. De Pereda subsequently wrote a number of short stories and three novels: All the Girls We Loved (1948), Fiesta (1953), and Windmills in Brooklyn (1960).

A piece of buried pulp treasure. "All the Girls We Loved" is a short novel of loosely-connected anecdotes about love and sex during WWII. It's vulnerable, intelligent, shocking, sexy, tragic. It's told with simple grace and openness and engages earnestly with the vulnerability of male sexuality that a lesser writer would have made salacious. There are shades of Hemingway in de Pereda's exploration/deconstruction of masculinity and how love and war both can shatter a man's psyche.

Most of the stories clock in at a solid 4 or 4.5/5, but there are a few stone-cold 5/5s that elevate the whole collection.
