Many colleges aren't teaching teachers what they really need to know, and as a result, thousands of teachers are fleeing the profession on an annual basis. Bob Kitchen offers practical advice, not 'teacher speak' rhetoric that helps in solving this problem. Sections include topics such as: how to find a job, how to prepare for the job, what to do and say on your first day, and how to handle various discipline situations that may arise throughout the first year.
Just like the man himself, Bob Kitchen’s advice on your first year of teaching was terse but profound. I am lucky to have had him as a teacher, and I’m even luckier to be carrying his wisdom into my first year on the job.
This is a short book with a lot of sound advice. I think it may be a little dated. It is a very short book and the author, being an English teacher, knows how to keep the writing simple and engaging. This book made me nervous and excited for my future teaching career at the same time. I have one more semester before I go into student teaching so I will definitely revisit this book then.
