Okay, first of all I'm sorry I can't give a higher rating, but... Can you imagine a reunion, hot sex, drama, more hot sex, secret child, hot sex, unresolved family issues, happy ending - and all that in forty pages? In other words, this story has all the right elements, super hot hero material, pretty nice idea, great potential... and it's so short, I kind of started reading it, blinked, and it was over.
So, here I am, yet again, stuck with my "not enough room for development" speech. Seriously, if it were only longer... if it were longer, I wouldn't have to worry this review's already too long.
Short, sexy, great sex scenes, good story but, would have been better if it was longer. Faith and Miguel fell in love in high school. She was from a loving blue collar family, he was rich, a football star, and heading to Princeton with a bright future in his family's business. She didn't want to hold him back so she unselfishly made a clean break which devastated both of them. He comes back for the first time 11 years later to get her out of his system so he can move on. They have a passionate reunion, but there is secret that could keep them apart. I thought for a shorter story the characters were well developed, where it was lacking was in the abrupt ending. I liked that when Miguel caught up to Faith he didn't beat around the bush, he asked her on a date, but said let's skip the dinner and just get it on because that is why he was there...brutally honest... and they got it on and on! I would rate it 3.5 stars because I wanted more, but I did enjoy it.
I don't mind novellas when they are part of a series but this seems to be a standalone 40 page "book" with a promised continuation since 2012. It is 2017 now so I doubt Sylvia Day will be continuing the story of Miguel Santos and Faith Bennett.
With that in mind, this is just way too short to give above 2 stars. Although the story itself was intriguing it really needs to be made into a full-length novel, which I believe could have been possible since there is a lot of drama packed into the short 40 pages. I love the idea of a latino hero and I generally love a second chance romance story.
If the author decides to continue the series I may change the star status but as it stands this is a very weak standalone novella.
This was a short and steamy story with lots of drama! Interesting read but not something special, but still I enjoyed the break. Sylvia Day's short stories is a hit-or-miss for me.
So this was a short story, quick read and all...and as such, I felt it was kind of rushed. I liked the whole idea, would have loved for more depth though...but alas it was a short story.
I think if I've never read Anne Calhoun's short story in which she made me feel like I've indulged in a full blown book, then I'd have more appreciation for this piece. But the mind knows what the mind knows I suppose.
Miguel is rich and spanish? (How fucking sexy is that.) And Faith isn't. When they were teenagers, going out - Miguel's parents thought she was a gold digger. But the truth was, their love was genuine but because of what people thought she might be, it planted insecurities within her. You can't blame the girl for her decision when it comes down to the root of it all, and I completely understand her...
Miguel however have this attitude that if he want something, no matter how bleak it may seem or down right impossible - he'd do everything in his power for it to work. I love and hated that about him. Everything isn't as simple as the rising sun - and because of his belief, it made him ignorant and a tad, teeny, tiny, tweeny bit annoying when he spoke. He needed to step down from his high horse.
Because of their dif background, their relationship was bound to be hard from the beginning, but Miguel is so beautiful inside out (and gosh - so fucking sexy) that he made it his business to go back and figure things out - at first to prove to himself that he wasn't hung up on Faith, but the moment he saw her, he knew he was lost...But how could he care? Gosh I love his straight forwardness and that little dominant streak in him.
Faith stood no chance.
The sex scenes were amazing. I just love it when he spoke spanish. It made me hot an bothered lol. And the way he took her, his commanding tone and just...Wow. Superb.
I don't fancy his mom much - A part of me can acknowledge what she felt, but another part of me can't help but throw some blame on her for the lost time between Faith and Miguel But blah.
I'm glad that there's going to be another book for this, going deeper - hopefully. I'm hoping that it's good...but in the ending the hot dude - Miguel - stated councelling and I rolled my eyes. I wonder if troubled characters, with fucked up issues - whether emotional, physical or both would be Sylvia's M.O. Not saying it's a bad thing, because she tends to bring out the feelings, and/or force the reader to feel as if they're going through it, and for that I love her as an author. But still... :P
I enjoyed this book...and although it's in a series - it's a stand-alone! =)
All Revved Up Okay, I liked the story. First thing I've read by Ms. Day and it wasn't bad. It was just too much going on for such a short installment. I would be interested to see how the series moves forward.
For a short-story erotica, I feel odd saying there wasn’t enough erotica! But pretty much like other reviewers have said, the premise is good, it just could have used a bit more fleshing out.
I decided to get this book for 4 reasons: 1) great price 2) Latin hero 3) the cover 4) the first chapter excerpt. It didn't disappoint. Even though Miguel and Faith hadn't seen each other since they were teens, the chemistry between them is combustible. The passion and intensity of their feelings leaps off the page.
The opening sentences are amazing and hooked me right away: "The smell of motor oil, degreaser, and coolant were among the very few scents in the world that made Miguel Santos’s d*ck hard enough to drive nails. He blamed that on Faith Bennett." Ha! Love it.
Miguel comes from a well-to-do family and went off to college, earned a degree, and makes a ton of money. Faith's family wasn't as well off as his growing up, and she works as a mechanic in her family's garage. What an unusual but cool job for a heroine. And even though she had an atypical job, she was still feminine.
The book held my interest the entire time. It never seemed to slow down. It's only 43 pages, but it's amazing how much story Day was able to pack into such a short read. I felt like I knew the characters and wanted them to work things out.
I did want the wrap up at the end to be a bit longer, though. It was only about a 1/2 page and seemed over way too fast.
I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reunion love story that's interesting, steamy, and a quick read.
Wow - this is pretty intense for such a tiny story!
As always with very short stories, I don't think you can judge them too harshly on being abrupt. I wouldn't expect great swathes of characterisation and a tidy little epilogue.
In this case my rating has to be based on the incredible things the writer has done in so few words. Yes, I could have done with more in some areas, but I have to say that the depth of character and emotion (not to mention scorching love scenes!) that was achieved here has really blown me away.
As always with secret-child stories it leaves a sour taste in my mouth because no excuse is actually acceptable, unless the parent kept in the dark is dangerous in a significant way. That aside, the only character that I didn't understand at all was Miguel's mother. I know that incredibly rich and ambitious people can have very skewed ideas of right and wrong, but the explanation as to the reasons for her choices didn't really compute for me. I think she was really the only character that suffered because of the length of the story.
4.5 stars! I'm a total sucker for second chance romances and especially those that feature people from differing socio-economic environments just because the problems they face are different and it's interesting to see how a couple handles them. I must say this story was extra hot and I loved it!
I liked this short story . A little too short , so the characters didn't clash as much as I wanted them to. Also I think the ending was very nice and I enjoyed it for what it was .
Soooo anytime I’m in a reading slump I just need to read a short romance novel and suddenly I’m back in business baby!!!! Reading here I come shoutout to this book lmfao
This was a fun little read. It had an interesting plot and characters I just wish it had been longer. I wanted more time with these characters and I wanted to watch their story develop more but overall it was worth the read.
I really enjoyed this one. I am a fan of Sylvia Day I think it can be safe to say. I've read 4 short reads by her and the first 3 books in the Crossfire series. I enjoyed each full length and two of her shorter reads including this one. I felt very connected to the characters even though I only spent 43 pages with them!
Faith and Miguel were high school sweethearts. Madly in love they spent time in their own little world for years. Until close to graduation Faith left Miguel without any warning or stirring problems in the relationship. He took this hard so as he went off to college and she worked at her father's shop. Miguel tried to get over Faith, through other relationships, time and work but after more than ten years he still finds himself thinking about her every second of the day. He has come to only one conclusion, go back home for his thirtieth and get Faith out his system by getting into her system. It seemed simple, he'd see that he was just a silly boy in love but after the feelings are still there, possibly stronger, there is nothing else he can do but not live without her. There is a problem though, things and people change over ten years, can Miguel handle the baggage and secrets Faith has held from him all this time?!
The story had a premise that's often used but I can overlook that. What I can't overlook is story length and character development. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it would have contained the aforementioned. Okay, here it is to sum it up:
Oh, I almost forgot. In between all that, Faith and Miguel have some steamy sex. Really, how could I forget that.
This was a decent read and I was interested in the plot, but it was so short! I would have loved to see it all fleshed out a bit more. I’m left with so many questions, and there wasn’t a good feel for the characters.
Miguel returns home after about 10 years away from home. He went to Yale and became some sort of businessman in NYC. His high school girlfriend, Faith broke up with him to not hold him back. Without Miguel knowing, she had his son, Michael. Miguel sleeps with Faith and wants to take her back to NYC with him. She tells him she has a son and he still wants to be with her and take care of her son. He then finds out Michael is HIS son and although he is upset he forgives her in the end and still asks her to come with him back to NYC with Michael.
This had all the makings of being a heartfelt second chance romance & I get that the beauty in it is because it's a short story but I needed more. I needed /more/.
I. Needed. More.
And not the HEA but the difficulty of trying to get back to where they'd left off a dozen years ago with a resentful teenager between them ans the culture shock of New York.
I am so convinced this wouldnt have been as easy as breathing. I am doubly convinced I'd have enjoyed the fight to stay together even more than a sappy ending.
