TORN FROM ENGLAND BY AN IMPOSTOR HUSBAND, SHE LOST HER INNOCENCE ON THE HIGH SEAS AND SUFFERED THE TORMENT OF A SECRET LOVE
Eager to escape her grandfather's hatred, high-spirited young Katherine Farley agreed to marry Julian Warwick, a stranger from across the sea. Immediately he swept her away, setting sail for his home in South Carolina. On board ship, Katherine soon discovered that her new husband was not the foppish Julian, but Julian's younger brother, Kit, the virile captain of a privateer whose mission was to prevent British soldiers and arms from reaching the embattled Colonies.
Though shocked at Kit's deception, Katherine could not resist his fiery touch, giving her heart completely to the dashing impostor, though she feared he did not reciprocate her love.
But Charleston held even greater torment for Katherine, when she met the real Julian Warwick --- and Rachel, Kit's ravishing fiance!
Barbara Benedict obtained an English major in college, and she went on to teach high school but she’s always been drawn to the magical process of writing. For Barbara, books are the keys that open the doors to life and all its wonders. For as long as she can remember, she has been stepping through these portals—by both reading and writing—to explore the myriad worlds they offer.
In 1984, Barbara published her first novel, an historical romance set in colonial South Carolina, and has since written about eras and locales as far apart as present day Louisiana to Arthurian England and Minoan Crete.
Not only does Barbara take pleasure in reading about exotic times and places, she also travels to the actual locations to gather the tiny details — when the sun sets, how the air feels, what sights, sounds, and habits are unique to the area. Accompanying her on these research trips, her husband serves as volunteer photographer and the romantic escort. As she’s often said, she could never "quite pull it off" without him. She firmly believes that the secret of writing a romance lies in "living a romance."

Katherine (Kathy) Farley, was a girl with hopes of adventure and romance. Untimely death of her parents brought her under the guardianship of her grandfather who hates her and wants to get rid of her. Her father married a tavern maid for which her grandfather has never forgiven. Her grandfather pressured under societal obligations and in need for an heir (Kathy's father was his only child) he decides to marry her in a far away country. He would rather give his wealth to his grandson-in-law than his granddaughter. Katherine is charmed by Julian Warwick no matter his obnoxious taste in dress of rich fabric, of glittering jewels, and shimmering crystal-blue wig. He was no man of her dreams but she wants to escape the vehemence of her grandfather. In a span of few days and almost getting dumped on her wedding day she gets married to an imposter and was taken away to a faraway land on a pirate ship. The book was enjoyable upto this much, I spent the rest of the pages skimming.
Christopher Warwick (Kit), pretended to be his older brother, Julian Warwick. He was in need of cash, Julian used Kit's ship to pay off his gambling debts. Kit in return uses Julian's name to marry Kathy and her large dowry to buy a ship. While Kathy (later realises) luckily marries the man of her romance but getting along with him was not easy. She manages to win everyones heart in the ship (except the cook who was a leacher), she helps Kit from getting caught but they create a vast misunderstanding, no surprises here. Kit and Kathy like each other from the beginning, they fell in lust/like/love together but they don't trust each other. After reaching America (Kit's homeland) Kathy gets along with the real Julian. Kit is jealous of her attention to his brother and Kathy is jealous that Julian's fiance is giving attention to Kit and he is reciprocating. Kathy finds out there is a past between the two brothers with Rachel. Rachel who is the best villain here actually perked me up in this reading.
Julian always mocks Kit giving him errands and finding faults. While Kit gets a girl Julian snatches her from Kit. Julian always has a private disagreement to what Kit does. The final revelation that they are half brothers, and Julian's past deeds makes me understand Julian's jealousy. There is a war going in here to which Kit is a traitor to his family, no matter the sides Kathy doesn't betray him.
The rating of this book can be 4 stars but for me the climax of the story was not properly executed. It was okay. Kit never strays from his marriage, there was one forced sex scene, Kathy is a strong heroine. I'm not happy with how Rachel got her end but was savagely happy with Julian's end.

This book is tops on my list right up there with "Lisbon" by Valerie Sherwood. I cannot say enough good things about Lovestorm. You must experience it for yourself. I have kept my copy for over 10 years and it will continue to remain a permanent fixture on my bookshelf.
This was the first romance novel I ever read. It still graces my shelf and is still one of my favourites. It is also the only book I own that I cannot put down in anyway once I start reading it even though I have read it several times.
This may be my first real romance read, so I write this review as someone unfamiliar with this genre. Our protagonist, Katy, is very active. She is not a woman in distress - she gets things done. It was refreshing to have a overall-strong lead. However, this was a very long novel that depended on the trope of miscommunication too heavily for my enjoyment. I also did not know enough about this particular historical context to 'get' everything - there was some assumed knowledge that I didn't know. But, anyway, nice enough - I've read a romance novel now!
