Kate Cotoner lives in the north of England with her OH and a demanding bonsai named Mr M. She has a fondness for Asian men tempered with a love of hunky Germanic and Mediterranean types, and manages to combine love for all three types whilst watching Formula One motorsport. She loves history, needlepoint, reading, watching brainless blockbusters and meaningful foreign films, staring at US crime shows, and baking French-style bread. She likes strong, plot-driven stories and charismatic characters set against a sweeping, romantic backdrop of history, suspense, international locations and whatever else happens to take her fancy at the time.

I only knew Kate Cotoner paired off with Aleksandr Voinov and the fantastic book The Lion of Kent. I wasn't really sure if I would like this one because paranormal and fantasy are not what I usually read but the story intrigued me enough to give it a try!

I was extremely and pleasantly surprised by it. I was quiet literally absorbed by the book and its very strange and very thrilling atmosphere. The mixing of several different genres and periods was very craftily done and the result was a very interesting, original, and well written book. Her description of Victorian London was superb and so realistic.

We have here an very engaging murder mystery, combined with a paranormal twist. We have two contrasting main characters, coming from dissimilar worlds who both have their own goal to attain. At the end Nicholas' and Kristian's world will merge. This book really kept my attention from start to finish.

As I said already, I'm not accustomed to reading this genre but I have to say that I loved it ! I give it a 4.5/5.

Loved it. I love Cotoner's take on urban fantasy, in this case, a steampunk fantasy with a fresh take on some of the most well-worn mythical creatures. Satisfying and beautiful.

Steampunk meets Victorian murder mystery meets vampires of a sort. Nicholas has been sent into the bad part of London to look for information on who has been killing the locals. Oddly they’re blood is frozen in their veins but their body is not cold. One night Nicholas meets Kristian who takes him to an underground location where he is introduced to two other men known as Lord Winter and Lord Spring, Kristian is referred to as Lord Autumn. Thinking that Nicholas is a prostitute, he sleeps with Kristian who claims to have information about the murders, however before long it looks like Nicholas is the target and Lord Winter the killer. When Kristian finally reveals the truth about themselves Nicholas has to make a decision.

This takes place in a steampunk world where the government has huge air ships which seed the fog of London in hopes of either making it rain or burning off the fog, however this year it is colder than usual and rain seems to be the order of the day. I liked the whole steampunk world and it reminded me of old Jack the Ripper movies with the atmosphere. Lord Winter was uber creepy and it’s mysterious and mystical. If you’re in the mood for something kind of different and with lots of atmosphere of the time with a touch of steampunk (it’s not overdone), a good choice.
