Soldiers Overseas Romance #1

The Problem with Planning

Rate this book
Single dad. Divorcé. Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army.

All titles I’ve come to terms with, even if I didn’t see those first two coming.

I never imagined making a military move to Germany as a single parent. What else I never imagined? Having an insane spark like I’ve never felt with my son’s kindergarten teacher.

Livie’s a singular force of light and beauty, and I’ve never wanted someone so much. But after what happened last time, I can’t escape the dread of dragging a new wife into this life and failing again.

Besides, our lives are too different. Our plans don’t match. We definitely shouldn’t date and absolutely can’t afford to catch feelings.

Everything changed the day I walked into that classroom. And now the only thing that scares me more than trying for another chance at love is living with regret if I don’t.

The Problem with Planning is a dual point of view romance told in first person that will give you all the sizzle and heat but keep it sweet.

Don't miss any of these overseas military romances featuring travel to a new European city in each book!

Confession. I have had a sample of this book sitting on my kindle for several months. After searching for a few hours to find my next book, I finally gave up, closed my eyes, clicked on a sample and this one was the winner. Once I started it, I had the hardest time putting it down. It was just what the doctor ordered.

Y'all. I'm not going to lie. There were times that Livie and Eric drove me crazy! I kinda wanted to shake them and tell them to WAKE UP! At one point I may or may not have wanted to throw my kindle over my balcony. 😂

But, frustration aside, I adored these two! Their chemistry was sizzling and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. I enjoyed watching these two work through their insecurities and find their HEA. And we can't forget Delia and Robby! Oh my heart! Y'all! They are adorable and the story wouldn't be complete without them! 😍

This is my first book by Ms. Cain and I'm totally hooked! Don't ask me why it took my so long to dive into her books but I'm determined to rectify that immediately. I've already downloaded the next book in this series and can't wait to get to know Noah and Katie! And to see more of Eric, Livie, and their whole gang!

And of course I cannot forget my casting. Y'all. I'm in love! What do you think?

No-sex, military romance with European setting

Olivia Anderson is a 34-year-old, never-married woman who, for the past three and a half years, has taught kindergarten at a Department of Defense (DOD) school, at a US Army base in Kugelfels, Germany. Prior to that, she taught at military bases in North Carolina and Georgia. She eagerly accepted her current job because it offers an opportunity for travel and adventure, and there has been plenty of that. During her time in Germany, she has had a great time visiting many countries in Europe, and she enjoys teaching young children. In spite of the fact that Olivia has zero regrets about her career choices, for the whole of the past 13 years, she has clung to a goal of eventually returning to the little town near Richmond, Virginia, where her parents have lived for the past 15 years. As a much beloved only child, she is firmly convinced that it is her filial obligation to ultimately settle down near her parents, get married to a local man who is a committed resident of their town, produce several grandchildren, and be a devoted prop to her parents in their old age. Olivia has never discussed this plan with her parents, and they have never nagged her whatsoever to do anything related to that plan. It is just something she dreamed up at age 21, as a sop to her conscience, when she dumped her high-school boyfriend, the day after he proposed to her, and fled town in order to seek out exciting life experiences that simply do not exist in a backwater village in Virginia. For the first nine years after her escape, Olivia assured herself that she would definitely do her duty by age 30, but when that deadline arrived four years ago, and during all the subsequent years since then, she has not been able to face the prospect of condemning herself for the rest of her life to a stultifying existence in a small, Southern town. At the moment this story begins, Olivia has been sternly lecturing herself that her time is up, that she absolutely must return home by no later than age 35—before her childbearing years are gone. That dreaded milestone is looming on the horizon in less than a year, and Olivia feels nothing but gloom at the prospect of returning to Virginia.

Ruggedly handsome, 40-year-old Eric Wolfe is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. He is the divorced father of two children, Robby, who is a five-year-old boy in Olivia’s class, and Delia, who is a nine-year-old girl. Eric’s ex-wife, Renee, abandoned Eric and her children three years before. She announced that she had devoted 15 years to Eric and his military career, and it was, at long last, time for her to put herself first, by returning to the States to study medicine. Robby and Delia have been traumatized by their mother’s desertion, since she has barely seen them all this time. They and Eric have all required extensive therapy but, even so, Eric has not been able to shake off Renee’s cruelly false claim that there is no positive way for a woman to be married to a military man and, as a result, he has felt no interest in women, either sexually or romantically, since the divorce. It is, therefore, shocking to him that, from the moment he meets Olivia, he feels a very strong attraction to her. However, because he wants to set a good example for his children, he can’t imagine engaging in a casual affair. And because he strongly believes Renee’s gaslighting that he ruined her life, and he never wants to hurt another woman again, Eric is convinced that, as a man with at least another ten years of service ahead of him in the military, he has no right to marry again.

From the moment Olivia meets gorgeous Eric, and notices what a kind and caring father he is to adorable little Robby, she is more drawn to him than any man she has ever known. Unfortunately, there are two main reasons she cannot even consider dating Eric—if he were to ever ask her out. First, she has never allowed herself to date a career military man for the past 13 years of working on an army base, because that would directly violate her goal of ultimately marrying a man from her parents’ small town. Secondly, though there is no official rule against dating a parent of one of her students, she considers it unprofessional.

Things I liked about this romance novel:

1. The hero. I liked and admired Eric. He is a wonderful father, respectful of women and, in his career, an honorable, compassionate, dedicated officer.

2. The kids. I loved Eric’s children. They are adorably precocious, especially gregarious Robby.

3. The setting. The author is a former military wife whose husband was stationed in Germany, and it shows in the authentic feel of her descriptions of Germany and other settings in Europe.

4. Olivia and Eric as a couple. They are convincingly presented as ideally suited for each other.

5. Chemistry. In spite of the fact that there is no sex in this novel, there is strong chemistry between Eric and Olivia.

6. Therapy. I liked the fact that Eric and his children got therapy to deal with Renee’s awful actions, rather than “true love” being touted as a substitute for competent mental health care.

7. The basic writing and editing of this novel is well done.

Things I struggled with:

1. Neither protagonist has an active goal. Rather than either one of them pursuing something they want badly, this story bogs down because Olivia and Eric both have a passive goal. They passively avoid doing something they dread vs. actively seeking out something they strongly desire. (Author Jennifer Crusie calls this situation, “negative motivation.”) The problem is, passive goals create passive protagonists, and passive protagonists result in slow-paced, frequently boring plots.

2. The novel is quite redundant. I got tired of hearing repeated, over and over and over again, in Eric and Olivia’s passive, helpless/hopeless thoughts, why they can’t be with each other. Passive protagonists like this are unsympathetic, because it is frustrating to watch them, page after endless page, clinging to mistaken beliefs that prevent them from taking control of their lives in order to achieve the HEA required for a successful romance novel.

I really enjoyed reading mature characters navigating an unexpected romance, and especially one set in the military. Eric was dreamy but yet had flaws, and the fact he was aware of them made him even more attractive. I’ll admit it dragged a little for me in the middle; there weren’t any really huge obstacles or conflicts other than the characters just getting out of their own way. No black moment. On the other hand, it was extremely well written and built the relationship so well (both emotionally and the physical attraction) that I couldn’t stop reading. Definitely recommended!

Cute and heartwarming. I liked the forthrightness of Livie and Eric, though that made it weird when they didn’t talk but overall it was a quick, good story.

This book was wonderful! It was my introduction to Claire Cain and I am officially hooked!

This was a very sweet military romance. A single dad, Eric, has to make a move oversees to Germany with his kids. He almost instantly falls for his son's kindergarten teacher, however he knows that it isn't in the plan to have a relationship. The characters are relatable but still complex, and Claire does a great job being realistic while also having the hopeless romantic side come out!

Definitely a must read for all romance readers!

Nice single dad military romance. I really liked how Livie was open and confident in who she was. She had a bright light that shone on Eric and his family. Eric was a great, introspective character. They each had rigid beliefs about themselves and their futures that they needed to get over, but they did with the help of their families, in particular. It was fun reading an overseas military romance since I hadn’t read one before!

Loved this sweet sweet romance. Absolutely zero spice. Zero smexy or even fade to black. 🙁

It didn’t change the enjoyment of the story for me. Oddly enough. Even though I realy feel it could have used more intimate moments near the end.

But i get the lack of spice esp considering young kids are involved. But even one time at the pinnacle of their joy of accepting their love, would have been nice.

The fmc was 35 yr old and I am here for it. Thank you for writing a mature woman! Although she was acting ignorant about her life choices to stay or move, I was glad at the end she realized how effn obtuse she had been. And made changes.

I loved the MC. A single dad. Divorced. Two young kids. Draling w trauma of their selfish mom. I loved how he stepped into this place of longing for a woman after so long, and how he struggled w guilt to even let himself love another person. He was beautifully written.

I loved the sister and best friends. Side characters who are more than 2D are my favorite kind.

I DO wish we had been able to see more happy times w the couple. The entire book was the rollercoaster that was their relationship.

So having some look into their future would have been a nice touch. The story just felt like a thread without a knot tied on the end.

It just sort of abruptly ended. Maybe she carries on with this couple and we learn more about their future in the next book?

Anyhoo. I took a star off bc of the ending. It felt unfinished.

But if you need a light, sweet, no spice romance-this book is 100% for you. I look forward to reading it again. I may get the next one too.

So enjoyed this sweet military romance set on a base in Germany! Always a pleasant surprise to get MCs over 30, and a single dad, too. Lieutenant Colonel Eric Wolfe blames himself for how his first marriage fell apart, and refuses to risk another relationship failing because of Army life. Livie Anderson has a plan for falling in love, but that involves going home to find a regular guy in Virginia, not this handsome sweetheart Army dad. Their hearts prove plans only go so far.

Eric's guilt for his failed marriage and determination to shield his children and Livie from going through that again was painfully believable. Livie's love and sense of duty to her parents was admirable, even if I wanted her to wise up sooner than she did. These two were so good together, I was grinning wildly through the last chapters.

Oh no!!

After slogging through this wordy romance, I get to the end only to find the main story ends abruptly and the epilogue is a CLIFFHANGER.

I had planned to give this contemporary romance, The Problem with Planning, either three or four stars because I liked the characters, the children and the sweet story. However, it was a really slow read (I almost quit several times) because of all the introspection and redundant details. Now, because it ended in a cliffhanger, I cannot give it more than two stars. Also, I will not be reading anymore of this series or of the author, Claire Cain.

Content 411: This book contains some mild secular and religious swearing, as well as some very chaste kissing.

I really liked Livie and Eric as well as the secondary characters! Sweet, charming, and facing real world problems. My issue is that Eric and Livie wanted to start a relationship with each other even though they had absolutely zero intention of staying together or getting married. What kind of relationship is that? A purely physical one? That doesn't honor God in any way, shape, or form. That is purely for worldly enjoyment and leads to immorality...which the main characters were mutually one step away from at one point in this book. As I said, the characters and their personalities were absolutely delightful! They just really missed the whole point of being in a relationship.

Ok the cover on this one just bugs. It doesn't look like they are enjoying that kiss. I like how Cain writes and I like her characters but it's a the same formula every time. Sometimes that is ok but her books are always the same and I am getting tired of it. Two beautiful people meet, they are very attracted to each other, there are way too many obstacles in there heads to have a relationship, they end up kissing, then they are too busy to see each other until they realize they really want to be together.
These are clean romances with no religion.

A must read!

Wow. What a great story!! From start to finish, I was completely captivated with the characters and the storyline. Livie & Eric were brought together at the most unexpected time. Being a USAF BRAT & former USAF spouse, I completely related to them and the military way of life.

This is my very first read from this author - so happy that I found her. She has a unique way of storytelling and fully develops her characters. I enjoyed how each character told their story from their point of view. A super sweet realistic romance- it checks all the boxes for me. Readers who believe in romance and that great guys aren’t unicorns will enjoy this book!

Slow Burn Romance

A career soldier single dad meets and is entranced by his son's kindergarten teacher. Livie loves working in base schools and has developed a love for her station in Bavaria. They are both cautious and unwilling to become entangled in a temporary relationship. They work their way through, though, to a happy ending.

Great story!

Eric was so afraid to,love someone and marry because of his ex wife. She wanted things her way and gave up on her children. But on the other hand Livie loved his children and him. There were many ups and downs until reality hit, that they couldn’t be away from each other. Lovely story!

Great characters, I fell in love with the kids and the way the family supported each other! The romance feels real, ups and downs, fears and joy. The whole gambit of emotions was expressed, I laughed, cried and said”aw..” but it ended too soon!

I honestly could not get through this. I skipped through it. They were back and forth like two teenagers. No connection and I didn’t feel the attraction or love between then. It was a quite boring.
