Markov originally worked as a novelist and playwright in his native country, then governed by a communist regime under chairman Todor Zhivkov, until his defection from Bulgaria in 1969. After relocating to the West, he worked as a broadcaster and journalist for the BBC World Service, the US-funded Radio Free Europe, and Germany's Deutsche Welle. Markov used such forums to conduct a campaign of sarcastic criticism against the incumbent Bulgarian regime. As a result of this, it has been speculated that the Bulgarian government may have decided to silence him, and may have asked the KGB for help.[1] He died as a result of an incident on a London street when a micro-engineered pellet containing ricin was fired into his leg via an umbrella wielded by someone associated with the Bulgarian secret police.
Георги Иванов Марков е български писател и дисидент във времето на Народна република България. Роден е през 1929 г. в София и е убит при покушение на 11 септември 1978 в Лондон по поръчка на българската Държавна сигурност.

Наивна книжка, разказваща как в далечно бъдеще на Земята няма държави, всички живеят в едно високотехнологично общество и търсят разум във Вселената. Изчезнал е обаче Василий Орлов, пилот, който със своя екипаж от още 3-ма е полетял към далечни звезди в търсене на разум и планети, годни за живот.
От Земята изпращат експедиция, която да търси Орлов в мъглявината Аякс, където намират планета, годна за живот и започват търсенето на Орлов на нея. В крайна сметка го намират, а покрай това се осъществява и контактът между земната и чуждопланетната цивилизация, която също търси техен звезден пътешественик.
Без да се намеква, книгата описва бъдещето в обществото на победилия комунизъм.
