698 books3,019 followersPearl Comfort Sydenstricker Buck was an American writer and novelist. She is best known for The Good Earth, the best-selling novel in the United States in 1931 and 1932 and which won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938, Buck became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China" and for her "masterpieces", two memoir-biographies of her missionary parents.
Buck was born in West Virginia, but in October 1892, her parents took their 4-month-old baby to China. As the daughter of missionaries and later as a missionary herself, Buck spent most of her life before 1934 in Zhenjiang, with her parents, and in Nanjing, with her first husband. She and her parents spent their summers in a villa in Kuling, Mount Lu, Jiujiang, and it was during this annual pilgrimage that the young girl decided to become a writer. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, then returned to China. From 1914 to 1932, after marrying John Lossing Buck she served as a Presbyterian missionary, but she came to doubt the need for foreign missions. Her views became controversial during the Fundamentalist–Modernist controversy, leading to her resignation. After returning to the United States in 1935, she married the publisher Richard J. Walsh and continued writing prolifically. She became an activist and prominent advocate of the rights of women and racial equality, and wrote widely on Chinese and Asian cultures, becoming particularly well known for her efforts on behalf of Asian and mixed-race adoption.

Damn her stories are so engaging and fun! I loved her all sm. This is about a young Chinese boy poor who is villager and hopes to be a pilot one day but have no resources. His dad is poor teacher. He is sad that he is wasting his time and not learning about planes in his village.
One day an American pilot called jimmy lands in his village due to low fuel and meets Yu Lan and is impressed by his enthusiasm of planes. He promises that he will come back and take Yu Lan with him to his city where he can study to be a pilot. He waits for a long time and everyone thinks he won’t be coming because why will he remember a small village boy but then he returns and take Yulan with him :)
Such a nice hopeful book ! She knows about Chinese culture alot too I loved them

Un cuento sencillo sobre un niño chino durante la guerra y su afición por los aviones. Los aviones parecen ejercer un poderoso imán de sueños en los personajes, a juzgar por todas las historias en las que el concepto aparece. ¿Y por qué no? Los aviones ofrecen la posibilidad de desconectarse del suelo y del mundo en el que se vive, de salir a volar junto con la imaginación de uno, de sentir que se da un paso hacia el futuro.

Un lindo y sencillo cuento infantil escrito con la maestría de Pearl Buck. Muy recomendable, pues habla de valores como la amistad , el respeto , la familia y la buena comunicación humana entre distintas culturas.

Tengo la impresión de que estás historias de “encuentro entre dos mundos” siempre pecan de paternalismo por parte de una de las culturas.
Para variar es el blanco el que llega y sabe más, les dice que estudiar a Confucio no sirve, que lo importante es la ciencia y la aritmética, que lo esencial es lo actual y la lección que obtiene Yu Lan es que qué sabían los antiguos maestros que su padre lee del mundo moderno.
El problema no es que el blanco enseñe, sino que no hay un aprendizaje mutuo.
También hay comentarios de la familia Kung a Jimmy diciéndole que su piel no es buena porque se mancha (pecas) y cosas así, pero se reflejan más desde el desconocimiento que desde una superioridad.
Pero bueno, no es nada tan terrible.
