ADHD and Teens is a manual of practical advice to help parents cope with the problems that can arise during these years. A crash course is offered on parenting styles that really work with teens with ADHD and how these styles allow the teen to safely move from dependence to independence.
The book is dated and some parts don’t age amazingly since the 90s - but on the whole I learned a lot from this book. It helped me to better understand ADHD and how teens with ADHD function - but also shone a light on my shortcomings as a parent and what I need to do better. Very useful read.
this book had some helpful hints on what to expect from a kid with ADHD and how to react. I discovered that I actually knew more than I thought I did about this already so I didn't learn too much. Some of the ways to help the book suggests becomes impossible in the school setting though. For example, sit a student close to the teacher. I have classes which have 6 to 8 kids with this problem. They can't all sit next to me. And if I ask each one each day for homework and check notebooks, I will lose 10 or more minutes of instruction daily.
