In this fast-paced, wide-ranging biography, Gary Carey traces their origins and exploits with a clear-eyed tenacity that Little Mary herself would have admired; and there's a grace and energy in his writing worthy of Doug making one of his stupendous leaps across a chasm of improbabilities. In the end Carey has managed to capture and explain that most elusive secret of every movie eminence, from Pickford and Fairbanks to Streisand and star quality." Richard Corliss
Not as exciting a read on the silent movie era as,say, "Clara Bow - Runnin' Wild" by David Stein. This book does, however, recount how intelligent and assertive Mary Pickford was when it came to her film career and personal finances. Most of the big to-do (back in the 20's) about her relationship with Fairbanks was that she had been -gasp- DIVORCED! Not quite as shocking now. Very in-depth on movies and what it takes to get them made but as for intimate make-you-feel-like-you're-there details, like descriptions of their voices as in the Clara Bow bio, this book is definitely lacking.
