About the author

Heinz G. Konsalik (pseudonym of Heinz Günther) was a German novelist.

Many of his books deal with war and showed the German human side of things as experienced by their soldiers and families at home, for instance Das geschenkte Gesicht (The Mutilated Face), which deals with a German soldier's recovery after his sledge ran over a personnel mine and destroyed his face, and how this affected his relationship with his wife at home. It places no judgment on the German position in the war and simply deals with human beings in often desperate situations, doing what they were forced to do under German military law.

Der Arzt von Stalingrad (The Doctor of Stalingrad) made him famous and was adapted into a movie in 1958. Some 83 million copies sold of his 155 novels made him the most popular German novelist of the postwar era and many of his novels were translated and sold through book clubs. He is buried in Cologne.

Tek kelimeyle "mükemmel".
Bu kitabı okuduğumda ilkokuldaydım. Annemin kütüphanesinden kaçırdığım kitaplardan biriydi. Kısacık bir sürede okuyup bitirdiğim bu kitabın bazı ayrıntıları ve çarpıcı sonu canlı bir şekilde hala hafızamda. Bir süre sonra yaşadığımız sıkıntılar nedeniyle maalesef satmak zorunda kalkıklarımız arasında yer aldı bu kitap. Zaman geçip de meslek sahibi olunca kitabi yeniden satın almak istedim. Baskısı biten bu kitabı bulmak mümkün olamadı ne yazık ki.
Neyse bir yerlerde, bir şekilde karşıniza çıkarsa mutlaka alın okuyun derim.

Das grausamste Gesicht des Krieges ist wohl das vestellte oder weggesprengte Gesicht. Erzaehlung gesichtsverletzter Maenner des 2. Weltkrieges, die wieder "hergestellt" werden.

Een paar weken geleden voor de tweede keer gelezen.
Ik vind het een geweldige boek. De Nederlandse versie heet Mannen Zonder Gezicht.
Konsalik beschrijft de mannen, hun emoties, hun ervaringen en meer zo mooi... het lijkt alsof je erin zit. Aanrader als je een boek wilt lezen die niet al te diep op de oorlog in gaat, maar meer op de slachtoffers zelf.

I read this book in Afrikaans, titled "Die Geskende Gesig". It was profound. Opened a whole world for me, how people could live with things they took for granted, taken away from them. And more importantly, that others can accept you for what you are inside, not what is visible or destroyed outside.

My favourite ever book, harrowing description of the soldiers lives in hospital as they struggle to rejoin society, and how society treats them. Can be seen happening in every town in the world today, the lack of care and tolerance.

Lang geleden tweemaal gelezen. Het is mij altijd bijgebleven als een beklijvend boek waarin de arme soldaat steeds weer uitkijkt naar een nieuw stukje gelaat.
Voor mij het enige echt goede boek van deze schrijver.
