The stars are mainly for nostalgia's sake. I loved the Smurfs as a kid and I think I had a lot of these books (or at least read them) at some point of my obsession.

This one features Papa Smurf, Grouchy Smurf and...Smiley Smurf? I don't remember Smiley Smurf being a character at all. I watched the cartoon, so I could "hear" the characters in my head as I read.

Features familiar things; Grouchy who declares that he hates everything, the use of "smurf" as a verb, and Papa's use of magic to solve the problem after everything else has failed.

This smurfy little book features the familiar Baker Smurf and Grouchy Smurf, as well as Smiley Smurf, whom I don’t remember from the cartoon. He’s a bit lacking in personality, anyway. The plot involves Grouchy and Smiley being sent by Papa Smurf to fetch an egg for the cake Baker Smurf is smurfing. When they fail, he just gives Baker his magic book to make a cake, and it’s delicious. Why he didn’t do that in the first place is unclear. I guess it would have made the book too short.

I understand that Grouchy Smurf doesn't like things but I don't like that he "hates" everything. Hate is a very strong word. We should be very mindful of using it in books for children.

In Smurf Cake, Baker Smurf is making a cake, but does not have an egg to finish his project. He tells Papa Smurf, and Papa Smurf ask Smiley Smurf and Grumpy Smurf to go get them an egg, that has already been paid for. Smiley agrees, Grumpy follows along, and they set out for their adventure.

They face an obstacle, but are able to get an egg, which in the end they are not able to use. Papa Smurf figures a solution, and Baker Smurf is able to make the best cake ever.

If you are a Smurf lover, this is a great book for you and a child to read. It has all the qualitites of a Smurf cartoon.

My mom found this book at a flea market or something. I was about halfway through it when I realized I'd read it as a kid. I love being able to share those books with my kids. Especially obscure books like this. I didn't even know Peyo was a person until I saw there was an author page for him.

A worthwhile book about a war correspondent whose lover dies in a terrorist ambush. She commits to returning to the battle - befriends palestinians, has an affair with a spy. The major topic is journalist as voyeur who cannot commit to living.
