Don’t know why I bother reading dark and serious adult fiction when this sorta chaos exists

مثل بقیه کتابهای این مجموعه عالی بود.
یکی از نقاط قوت سری آقای گام این است که با وجود خنده دار و بامزه بودنش روایتگر یک قصه درست و حسابی هم هست و جوری نوشته نشده که فقط بخواهد بخنداند و سیر داستانی نداشته باشد.
هرچند مقایسه ی این اثر خلاقانه و شیرین با کتابهای بعضی نویسنده های خودبامزه پندار ایرانی از بیخ و بن غلط است ولی افسوس می خوردم که کاش این نویسنده ها کتابهایی مثل آقای گام را می خواندند تا می فهمیدند مرز خنده دار نوشتن و لوس نوشتن کجاست.یا این که صرف کنار هم چیدن یک سری جملات خنده دار باعث نمی شود شما نویسنده بشوید!!چیزی که یک کتاب داستان را "کتاب"می کند داستان آن است که متاسفانه داستان حلقه ی گمشده ی کتابها و رمانهای ایرانی است.
نمی شود از این کتاب گفت و از ترجمه ی عالی رضی هیرمندی نگفت.آقای گام کاملا پتانسیل این را دارد که با یک ترجمه ی بد نابود بشود!مثل خیلی کتاب های دیگر.ولی هیرمندی با هوشمندی و طنازی خاصی که داشته کتاب را به بهترین وجه ممکن ترجمه کرده و بازی های زبانی را هم جور خوبی درآورده،نه مثل بعضی معادل گذاری های بی معنا و اعصاب خردکن که جز اظهارفضل مترجم چیز دیگری را نمی رساند.
درباره ی شخصیت های این مجموعه واقعا نمی شود یکی را انتخاب کرد و گفت این بهترین است-به جز آقای گام البته-ولی این جلد یکی از بهترین و بامزه ترین شخصیت ها را دارد به نام میلیونر بیسکویتی که هرچی ازش بگویم کم گفتم.یک بیسکویت زنجبیلی عضلانی! که خیلی خیلی پولدار است و دنبال دوستانی می گردد که او را فقط به خاطر پولش نخواهند.

March 29, 2017I remember being read one of these books for the first time ever in Year 4. I absolutely loved them and I remember this was one of the first times I made my mum drive me to the bookshop in desperate need to get the book for myself, read ahead, and get more of the books in the series!!! I went crazy! Every time we went to the bookshop I'd look to see if they had more, and I must admit even now when I go I can't help but go looking for them :P old habits die hard!!!

i’m actually quite scared of alan taylor so my favourite bit was when he was lying in his four poster bed sobbing because he had lost all his money. it made me giggle

The second book in the series and the third one I have read.
This contains Spike Milligan style surreal humour which is never a bad thing. The plot isn't always linear which did cause me to backtrack at times. It has genuinely funny lines and descriptions to amuse all ages. It just had a little less impact than the first book and so I have rated it a star lower (I also noted my typing error in my review for that. I could fix it. I might not.)
One for a new reader to read with help or a parent to read with imagination. The series is worth investing in.

September 19, 2011Mr.Gum is known for his mischievous ways. When he wakes from his precious pastime of sleeping he likes to cause trouble. He enlists the help of his friend Billy William to scam money off a local gingerbread man Andy Taylor. He is human like in the way that he has electric muscles to make him walk and move and he his name is quite human like too. At his house warming consisting of a funfair and a variety of food, Mr.Gum and Billy see this as the perfect opportunity to steal Andy’s money. This is where heroic girl Polly and her friend Friday catch these villains. This book is truly an imaginative and hilarious read. Children will be laughing as each page is turned thanks to the clever use of characters and how they act throughout the story. The good versus evil element is evident in the story. The illustrations are very colourful and would be appealing to children. I would recommend this book for children aged eight and upwards.

“Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire” is a great descriptive children’s story packed with humour, which would keep children entertained. This book would be suitable for children in key stage 2 who are progressing in their reading.
This book is about a young girl Polly who meets Alan Taylor a gingerbread man who has electric muscles and a tin full of cash. Alan believes the only way to make friends is to give out money however; Polly likes Alan for who he is despite his money. Mr Gum is an evil, mischievous man who hates everyone. Once Mr Gum learns about the money Alan has he decides to steal it with the help of Billy Williams a horrible butcher. Polly and Friday O’Leary help find the thieves and the bring back Alan’s money. Masquerading as a children's book, Mr. Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire is very much a study in nature of friendship, evil doings, and money management. It is also a look at life which shows that when everything is lost, you can still have your friends (as long as you don't make friends by giving them money). This book has lessons in it that are as good as the lessons in The Art of War or Seven Habits of Effective People.
It is as thrilling as a Matthew Reilly book, as absurdly funny as Douglas Adams, and as mysterious and out of the world like something written by Murakami.
And it has poo and boogers in it.
Read at your own risk.

Kirjan kieli on hauskaa, nimet oivallisesti keksittyjä ja tarina varsin jännä. Pidän kyllä kirjasta mutta toisaalta kieli on hieman liian kuvailevaa, välillä voi olla hankala pysyä perässä. Tämä on siis sekä huono että hyvä asia. Jostain syystä annoin kuitenkin vain neljä tähteä, vaikka mietin todella pitkään mitä annan. Puolikkaat ois kyllä niin pop juttu. Uusi tuttavuus ja tartuin kirjaan vain Helmet- haasteessa olleen kohdan takia, jossa pitää lukea palkitun kääntäjän kääntämä kirja. Kirja oli kyllä positiivinen yllätys. Tuskin olisin lähtenyt takakansitekstin perusteella lukemaan, enkä ole ko. kirjasta muutoinkaan kuullut. Harkitsen lukevani muitakin osia sarjasta.

- The only reason I picked this series up again was because I remembered loving them as a child and I thought they would be light, fun reads. However this just was not a fun experience for me in the slightest. The blatant fatphobia in this genuinely left me feeling absolutely disgusted and sends the absolute worst message to children. I ended up just skipping passages towards the end just to get this over with. I will 100% not be reading anymore books from this series.

Hilarious, in fact I often had to pause while reading this to my kids because I was laughing too hard.
I'd say this is an ideal book for a 9 or 10 year old, lots of farts and boogers and silly British accents.

I have never read something so exquisite. So deep. So complex… like a dark brooding moon, you only ever see one side: the pale light fighting the black depths… fighting as if to establish who shall rule. Yet we mortals can only watch is pure terror while our fate is decided.

На продовження походеньок пана Гама українською я чекала багато років, бо страх як люблю першу книжечку серії і вважаю її маленьким шедевром. І от нарешті — сталося! Поллі, Фрайді-Нежурись і песик-здоровесик повертаються! З кількома примітними доповненнями.
Пряниковий мільярдер із назви — це не хтось, хто має мільярд пряників, як я собі думала, а цілком собі пряниковий чоловічок, який має до лиха грошенят. Цей імбирно-медовий Великий Ґетсбі перебирається до Бель-Котятина, де оселяється у здоровенному палаці на пагорбі, де одразу ж проводить масштабну вечірку, на яку запрошує геть усіх жителів містечка, мимохідь роздаючи їм гроші. Схоже, Алана Тейлора ніхто не навчив, що дружбу за гроші не купиш. З бідолашного маленького пряничка насміхалися у школі, тож тепер він відчайдушно прагне, щоб його усі любили. А гроші люблять усі, правда ж?
Не знаю, як хто, як поганець пан Гам і його вірний посіпака, найогидніший м'ясник Англії Біллі Вільям, то точно. Вони грабують невинного пряникового чоловічка і того відразу ж покидають усі його вдавані друзі і навіть слуги обдирають палац, як липку, так він і маячіє на пагорбі, як обдерта липка. Кінець.
Ой, ні! Наша Поллі любить свого солодкого друга не за гроші, що вона намагалася йому втовкмачити пів книжки і тепер вона має шанс це довести.
Я дуже тішуся, що серію й далі перекладає Орест Стадник, його адаптований переклад чудово пасує цим книжечкам і від жартів можна пузо собі надірвати. У книжечці збережені оригінальні ілюстрації Дейвіда Теззімена і виразні шрифтові акценти, тож її дуже легко та зручно читати і вголос, і дитині самостійно. Чекатиму нових каверз від пана Гама!

I just love these books, and so does my ten-year-old. The wordplay is excellent. Packed with great pubs and hilariously unexpected similes and metaphors.
This (second in the series) is packed full of all our favourite characters, from Martin Laundrette and his incriminating diary, through to a memorable cameo from The Spirit of the Rainbow and his mum. Perhaps most importantly, though, is that this book introduces the great gingerbread man with electric muscles - Alan Taylor - to us and all the folk in Lamonic Bibber.
As usual, Mr Gumm and Billy William III are there to spoil the party, but Polly and Friday call on the help of various favourite characters in trying to save the day.

Nó đem lại niềm vui cho tôi và chắc chắn khi các bạn mệt mỏi 😑thì tôi nghĩ các bạn nên đọc quyển sách này và thưởng thức những niềm vui tươi😀 trong đầu và đọc cho cả bố mẹ các bạn vì tôi nghĩ nó sẽ hài hước đến mức cả bố mẹ các bạn cũng sẽ cười, thật đấy các bạn hãy thử đi 🤗! April 18, 2022I read this as part of a children’s writing course. It would be good for children who are into gruesome humour about entrails and bodily functions. It has fun, caricature characters such as Alan the gingerbread man and Mr Gum himself. It has a good plot line and a quirky sense of humour which I am sure a lot of children would enjoy. A couple of bits did make a joke of fat or smelly people which I didn’t like but that may be due to the fact it is quite an old book now.

May 19, 2020Good book for English mother-tongue-speaking kids. Lots of slang/bad English on purpose (chatter of characters) so it wasn't so good for my daughter for whom English is more of a second language than mother tongue

There is much in the way of surreal humour to enjoy here, but in the end nothing really in the way of a story - it's all set-up, and then a rapid denouement (when the writer's ideas evidently ran out).
