I quite enjoyed this one, it had a decent amount of eeriness about it. Could have been so much longer and better though and was lacking a certain amount of suspense and detail.
I was reading through the reviews earlier and noticed that someone described this short as "a little mind candy." That sentiment seems to me to sum up Joshua's Scribner's short stories. They're sweet, short, and addictive, but not quite satisfying enough because the reader is always left wanting to read another one. Scribner almost always seems to include some twist at the end that's not easily foreseen, which adds to the enjoyment of the read. Nicely done.
Dennis Harkum wakes up in an unfamiliar place. Slowly, he realizes where he’s at—the town he’s just moved to, the new house, and his wife Crystal there with him.
Turns out that Crystal got an internship locally, so Dennis has taken a year of hiatus from his own studies (law school). Crystal is studying psychology.
The nightmares begin shortly thereafter. The mysterious shadow, the purple lights, the small body…
When Crystal begins having the same visions, things get crazy.
Ominous, spooky, creepy.
“We weren’t protecting her from it. She was protecting us from it.”
Before reading this review understand that there are definite potential spoilers in it. So let me just say that I enjoyed Violet Lights. It's short, but it does draw the reader in and there are some parts that are really creepy. That's really all you need to know without risking ruining the read for you. As for the rest of you here is the rest of the review:
Obviously since it is a short story the author doesn't go into a lot of detail or history with the characters or their house. Which I think is a shame and the only real draw back. Honestly I think the story could be made longer and make it that much better. I would have loved to find out more about who exactly it is that is haunting Dennis and his wife. But that is really the only thing I found lacking in the book. Otherwise I think that Violet Lights is a great taste of the authors writing. I really was interested in what was going to happen to the characters and as I said above there were definitely some creepy parts. The ending is abrupt, but considering the length of the story it made sense and there is no room for doubt as to what happens to Dennis and his wife.
Histoire intéressante ! Et très flippante sur la fin... Encore une fois j'ai aimé la façon dont on part d'une situation très commune pour plonger dans un truc parfaitement science fictionel !

An interesting read! And pretty scary at the end... Again Ioved how we start with a perfectly normal situation to get sucked into a scifi world!
Nice short little paranormal story, with an enjoyable twist. Was only a 10 minute read, and slightly disappointed it finished at 81%, it did have the potential to be longer, with more detail.
