Following the release of the third Dirty Harry movie, The Enforcer, in 1976, Clint Eastwood made it clear that he did not intend to make any more Dirty Harry movies. In 1981, Warner Books (the publishing arm of Warner Bros., which made the films) began publishing a number of men's adventure series under its now-defunct "Men of Action" line. One such series features the further adventures of Inspector Harry Callahan. The books, written primarily by Ric Meyers and Leslie Alan Horvitz, appeared under the house name Dane Hartman. The series was brought to an end when Eastwood decided to direct, produce, and star in a fourth Dirty Harry movie, Sudden Impact, which was released in December 1983.

I love these Dirty Harry books. Clearly written to a spectacularly short deadline, it’s pure action trash, with Harry this time gouging out eyeballs with reckless abandon.
Reportedly written by martial arts movie critic Ric Meyers, it’s about as dated as you’d imagine a quick and sleazy pulp novel about Chinese/Japanese race relations would be, with eyebrow-raising language and descriptions that most will find rather offensive these days.

Karate no matter how good you are, you can't fight a bullet. Chinatown where gang fights is a way of life. The gorgeous smells of food, ducks strung up in shops, people going about their day. Harry's part time lover is kidnapped but Harry is still a cop and stumbles upon a drug ring. He triggers a bullet into the skull, the sound like a cracked open coconut. Harry pumping enough lead to make a set of barbells. Harry fights a guy with nunchakus and punches a guy in his balls! Fighting in a Chinese restaurant Harry throws boiling hot soup in gang members faces. Burning skin sizzling. Whenever Harry goes crime and violence follow. Violence is his real lover. He shoots a guy in the head, gooey yolk-like gunk ooze down the face. Another shot in the ankle, blood spurting like an uncontrollable garden hose. Harry kills. Harry kills a lot.

This was very enjoyable. Yes dated and uses the language of its time but not outrageously. Good Dirty Harry-ness throughout. Violence and gore is well described as always.

Another solid entry. This one sees Harry doing much more hand-to-hand fighting than usual. Ric Meyers does a good job with his books in the series; he captures the style of Dirty Harry very well. He does his best to match the classic scenes from the films. In "Duel For Cannons" he adds a nice twist to the ..."Do you feel lucky?" speech and this one ends with another of Meyer's variations on, "Now I know why they call you Dirty Harry". Enjoyable pulp fiction.
