Balefire #3

A Feather of Stone

Rate this book
After seventeen-year-old Thais Allard loses her widowed father in a tragic car accident, she is forced to leave the only home she’s ever known to live with a total stranger in New Orleans. New Orleans greets Thais with many secrets and mysteries, but none as unbelievable as the moment she comes face to face with the impossible—an identical twin, Clio. Thais soon learns that she and the twin she never knew come from a family of witches, that she possesses astonishing powers, and that she, along with Clio, has a key role in Balefire, the coven she was born into. Fiery Clio is less than thrilled to have to share the spotlight, but the twins must learn to combine their powers in order to complete a rite that will transform their lives and the coven forever.

"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of control. There's an air of lassitude there, a general acceptance of eccentic or flamboyant behavior--the heat simply makes people do crazy things.

I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans. Then I went back to New York (Manhattan) and got a job in publishing and started writing. My first book, a young, middle-grade chapter book, was published in 1990.

Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

(While I was in NY, I helped edit "The Secret Circle" by L.J. Smith. I thought it was great.)

We stayed in New Orleans five years. By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. I was glad my children were born in New Orleans--I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on. There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important.

Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC. This is the most suburban place I've ever lived, and it's very different from living right in the middle of a city. For one thing, there aren't enough coffee shops. However, it's incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me. There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.

Am I a witch? Well, no. Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me. I'm much more idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new-agey and pantheistic. It's not that I don't work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it. However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity. I love those aspects, among others.

I have several favorite writers. Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic. She's an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world. I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties. She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman's day; how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance. I greatly admire P.D. James. She's one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary. She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe. I love Philip Larkin's poetry. I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers. Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that's kind of what we're all doing, right? I also just like reading about sex. Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves.

And then of course there's my dark side, but more on that later.

Enjoyable enough, but this is let down by a complete lack of character development.

Still good BUT!

Looks like the romance in this series comes in a distant second to the actual story. That is fine though. Now that I realize that there is only a hint of romance, I can stop feeling let down by the lack of girl/boy/girl action and focus all my attention on on finding out how the story is resolved in book #4.

First port of call with this review is how unattractive is that cover please?! I apologise to everyone who likes it, but really, it looks pretty, well, not pretty. I'm so glad I have the bind up edition with the twins front and centre on it, I can tell you that.
In other news, I was surprisingly really excited to read this installment of the series, which really confused me. Having previously given A Chalice of Wind 2.5 stars and A Circle of Ashes 3 stars, I really couldn't comprehend why I was suddenly so intrigued and excited to read about the characters, their individual and group devolopments, how the plot would hopefully improve and progress and have some answers to a large amount of questions and I had formed over the last two books. I couldn't help but hope to myself that this book wouldn't let me down, and in an unexplainable way, it both did, and didn't.

The opening chapter was a great starting point. It easily refreshed my knowledge of the series, although the constant referral to previous scenes did great on me, and I was impressed at just how easily fell back into the, all be it, still not highly descriptive world that Cate Tiernan has created. As with most of the creative spell casting scenes that the characters have, in most cases, Clio and Thais, I thoroughly enjoyed almost all of them throughout this book, as I felt they had improved, while the severity of each decision made was much more dangerous and the repercussions of these was intriguing to read, especially that of the scene between Clio and her neighbourhood cats. While the plot itself was and still is improving at a very slow pace, the writing style is frustrating me at an equally slow but continuous pace, and this is all down my new favourite bug beerer, the miniscule chapters. As I had mentioned in my review for A Circle of Ashes, the chapaters sizes really got my back up, with some spreading over good lengths and others at 3, maybe 4 pages a turn. Well, Cate Tiernan excelled herself in this installment, as I counted three, yes, three chapters, all less than a page in length. Not even a page. Less than a page. Starting at a third down the page and finishing at two thirds. A third of a 20cm height book. I'm sorry, but what is going on here? And yes, I do get that there are so very many characters in this series and that each need to be mentioned, but those extreme minimal chapters were not necessary in anyway to the plot or the characters at all, other than possibly one. As I suspected originally, these chapters are a problem still and I shall also predict that it will be through to the very end.
As for the other problems I had with this series, the length of each book is still upsetting me. I want them to be longer. I want more to happen in them. I want some independence between each book. I want a series, not a book quartered. Guess we don't all get what we want in life.
The last problem I had with the plot and story was just how many questions I still have, especially over who's trying to kill the damn twins. It's seriously beginning to look like Clio and Thais have been bagged up, closed up tight and every other character thinkable has been entitled to a kick here or a punch there or a lamppost on top of them. This isn't some sort of hero story, I'd like a little less 'escaped death by the skin of their teeth' and a few more answers Cate. Thank you.

However, I bring great and glorious news. There were improvements in comparison to the previous two. Hallelujah! While I felt the others concentrated a lot more on the other, less important members of the Treize, which in some places was greatly welcomed, A Feather of Stone was much more centred around Clio and Thais. I was finally thrilled to be getting some genuine perspectives from the twins, rather than some washed down, filtered out ones from what they'd heard or been told.
While I could appreciate why Clio's characters was on an ever going downwards spiral, I felt as a character, she'd be placed on pause. She'd suddenly become a hard character to feel anything towards or relate to her, and although her attitude towards being a sister changed in a positive light, her genuine personality and eagerness just seemed to have up and left. However, Thais' character just grew and grew and grew. Her attitude improved and became both more positive and much more authority of herself, her feelings became more mature and genuine, and her intelligence and knowledge just soared. I began to get excited over chapters in her perspective. I felt both her joy and her deflation. I could see how much her blossoming relationship was helping with her confidence, and how having a family and sister to support her only made her fight harder and much more strongly for what she wanted and believed in. I don't know if these huge character changes are in preparation for the final installment of this series or whether it's just been done for the fun of it, but my journey with Thais is a fantastic one.
As for other characters, only one has really grown alongside Thais, and that's Richard. I would like to say, I don't condone what he was trying to accomplish to begin with, but I genuinely like his character as a whole. He has mysterious traits that make him both alluring and dangerous, but he also, especially in this book, has a soft and caring side towards Clio with made him much more human to me. And in the scenes he shared with Clio, I seriously felt a lot towards his character; sympathy, jealousy, empathy, even annoyance on the odd occasion, whether it was a result of his feelings for Cerise, for Clio, or his anger and hatred towards Marcel, I felt for his character a tremendous amount.
Of course, though while some characters improved, other's only had further to fall. I was disappointed on how little we got to explore the past lives of the other characters, considering we're three books in and only know of mentionings of past feelings or relationships, rather than some good juicy reminiscing, or some genuine heart felt feelings, positive or negative. Once again, I'm left wanting more from this series.

Overall, the story did improve, and the cliffhanger was of an acceptable standard, even tempting me ever so slightly to start the last book right away, but I resisted. It still lacked enough descriptions and conviction and still continues to feel rushed and compressed to the minimum amount possible. I can only hope that Cate can answer all my questions, give me a good ending, and not palm the characters off into couples like a large number of series endings do.

3 Stars.

I enjoyed this one a little less than the first two, but it was still good. There's a lot going on, secrets revealed and whatnot but still not a lot of actual action. The story progresses nicely as it did in the previous books and I'm looking forward to getting to the finale. There's not really any character growth or development, they are who they are.

All in all, good addition to the series. Definitely read if you've read the first two books.

So, the rite happened, someone died (not anyone of importance), and Petra protected the girls.

It was good. I liked it better than the first two books, and i really like how it ended.

Not much to really say: Clio's somewhat tolerable in this book, Thais is the only character i really care about besides Sophie.

The whole Richard/Clio thing is disgusting to me - like you're really gonna screw your mom's boy toy? Gross.

This book was great like the first two. I wish there was more of them actually doing magick, but it's still a good story.

The only weird thing is the first book had Luc dating Clio and Thais...and then u find out they're distantly related. And then in this book, Clio almost sleeps with Richard....and then u find out they're also distantly related. Distantly or not, that's gross LOL 😂

A good read , that kept my interest, carried on well from the last installment and probed deeper into the new characters' lives a bit further.
Interesting storyline that followed the backstory well and managed to flit between the past and present really well.
Total cliffhanger of an ending; very frustrating. Can't wait to read the next!!

Great continuation of the series, although starting to feel a little rushed. I read that she had originally planned this series to be longer but they forced her to only do 4 books. I feel like you can start to tell in this one.

Review on Balefire #3: A Feather of Stone

By: Cate Tiernan

This third book is one amazing chapter into both Thais and Clio's lives. As young girls who definitely training to become powerful, they encounter wierd things that go on. In the beginning a snake comes and tries to attack Thais and Clio, brave enough the attack didn't last long. Another attack was where Clio's car ended up in flames and that was like their nan's house that had been put in flames. Clio and Thais want to become immortal, because as they both grow up and have kids, they as mothers will die. The strange attacks were soon mentioned to be one of Richard's spells. Luc and Richard disliked each other at the end, since Luc found out Richard had put nan(Petra), Thais and Clio in danger. Axelle was one who knew a bit about the attacks, and Daedalus, and the rest of the Trieze. Finally at the end, they gone to the circle of ashes, where their nan would keep Clio and Thais safe forever. Clio really likes Luc, and Thais really likes Kevin, inside their hearts.

This was pretty bad. There were a couple of good points but as a whole it was really bad. The Characters haven't been developed much after the previous book. The author has remained safe and stuck with shallow stereotypes for her characters. Especially Clio, she has absolutely no depth, it is irritating. THese books don't even get into any deeper side to the religion, it just discusses magick in a very shallow and weak way without putting any deeper meaning into it, it just seems its there for them so "feel good, connected and stuff".

This series is nothing like the Sweep/Wicca series. This is absolutely horrible. Really Ms tiernan needs lessons on how to actually develop a realistic character.

Also with immortality its usually really cool because if you were immortal i'm sure you would have some sort of story or depth, so far no one has much character.

This is just a tacky series with what could of been an awesome plot line. I'm not looking forward to the next book.

More secrets were revealed both about the twin and about the people in the coven. For 200 years or so, the coven had been getting ready for another treize. A lot of planning needed to be done and now that there is a twin there are exactly enough people, 13. Richard, a guy from the coven gets more involved with the twin than before. There's something between him and Clio, but neither of them would admit to that fact. Clio is still not over Luc yet and she sees nothing in Richard. From the beginning Luc has already chosen Thais. Other than their love life, everybody is waiting around for the day of the joining of the full circle at the Circle of Ashes.

This book revealed more secrets about the coven's past and the love growing on Luc. Clio and Richard somehow begin to have random desire for one another, but Clio doesn't want anything to do with Richard since she says she loves Luc. thais and Luc are in love with one another but Thais is hurt by the game Luc created between her and her twin. Other than the love story, the book ended with the coven making treize to end their immortally. But somehow it did not succeed. What I love about this book is that it builds up all these emotions that feels you with confusion. Its a great book to read only rest you head from thinking way too much on books such as Hamlet or Lolita.

I'm not sure what to say about this book. I start to dislike most characters even more. And even the ones I didnt hate yet, I'm starting to... So far the only one that's Sane, is Thais. Which is by now, the only one I dont dislike. One of my bigger problems with these books for me, is, there are too many characters I really dislike. They are dark, have hidden agendas, are secretive, drink WAY TOO much.
Overall the books are okay, but I only keep on reading, cos I wanna know how it ends.. (stupid curiousity). Shortly after book 4 I'll reread the Wicca/Sweep series, books I Actually enjoy, with characters I've grown to love deeply :)

A great third part in this series. I still love reading Thais more than Clio, but she's growing on me. A great story full of mystery and intrigue, that had me hanging on every word. We learn more in this book about the past, and how it will effect the future. More of the lesser characters have been explained too, which was good for the storyline. A tale of fantasy and witchcraft, and one I highly recommend. Can't wait to read the fourth, and see how this story ends! I can imagine it won't be a happy one for most of the characters.

In the third book of the Balefire series, Thais and Clio continue to grow closer and to grow their magic. And the attempts on thier lives continue. The rest of group needed to reproduce the spell that made the Trieze members immortal in the first place. As the time for the spell grows closer, tempers and fear runs high.

This series is lots of fun. It only took me so long to read the book because it was my lunch book and I did not get to it every day. While I like the sweep series better, this series is compelling in its own way. I am curious to see how it will all end.

Nice book. It is way more obvious that Cate made this up though. The thing I loved about the Sweep series was that it all seemed very real, like it could actually happen. This is mostly because Wicca really is a religion. But in this series she describes a religion related to Wicca, which just seems less believable. But it is still a nice books, and I like the main characters in this book better.
