When someone comes into your life and you're unfamiliar with how would you react? This past quarter I read South Side Sports: First and Ten by Jeff Rud. The book brought my attention in many different ways. This book was a football book and I play and enjoy the game of football. It also brought my attention how well the book was written when the author was explaining each and every game I felt like I was on the field.

This book was a great book to read for myself. I have read a book before similar to this it was a great book also it was Kick by Walter Dean Myers. That was about the same concept in the book South Side Sports: First and Ten. First and Ten was a novel about a teenage basketball player in Middle School and then he finds himself going out for football for the first time in his life. Yet Matt is uncertain of the choice he made he has another conflict that comes into his life, his father has jumped into his life after an absence of ten years of Matt's life. Matt Hill is the main character and he is very athletic. Matt has decided to go out for football for the first time. He is very nervous and worried that he won’t make the team.

“All I can think about is the team and whether or not I will make it.”

Another main character in this novel is Matt’s father. When Matt was three years old his father left Matt, his mother, and Matt’s brother Mark.

“Matt you may not know who I am but I am your father. I made a mistake ten years ago to leave you, your mom, and Mark and I regret it, I just made a bad choice.”

Another main character in the book is Phil Wong. He is one of Matt's best friends and is also going out for football for the first time. Phil isn't one of the most athletic kids like Matt but Phil wanted to give it a try.

“Hey Matt, I decided to go out for the South Side football team this year. Hope to see you there.”

The main conflict in this book is when Matt's father makes an unexpected visit at Matt's house. His dad had been gone for ten years. Though his dad had not made the best choices in the past, Matt's father is asking for forgiveness. Matt gave a lot of thought about if he should forgive his father or not. His final decision was to forgive him. That one little choice that Matt made changed his whole life. He grew a great relationship with his dad.

“Hey dad can you come to my football game on Friday?”

This question was commonly asked by Matt. Matt saw that all the other kids had fathers there and so he felt that he needed one there to.

My book this quarter was fiction. This helped me understand the book because it showed all of the sensory details really well and I could picture what was going on in my mind. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars because I can really imagine what is going on and sometimes the I didn't get what was happening in the book, but that rarely happened.

Overall this book was a really great read for me and I would read another book by this author if I had to read another book again. The author that wrote this book was really great at showing what was going on and what the big picture was. He also always explained the conflict of what was going on. This book was a great book and I think anyone that likes to read sport fiction books this is a great one.
