*Spoilery Rant* <<<<< ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^^^This song is literally the story in a nutshell!!!!^^^ How sad is that??
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE 'Watering Hole' MISUNDERSTANDING! OH MY WORD!!!!! Just STOP. It was like the author was beating you while you were already down! My blood pressure couldn't take anymore stupidity!
If someone who claimed to know and love me thought that I was capable of such vile things, that my very essence and being was a lie, I would cut off all ties to that person immediately. I would be offended and insulted to my very core. It could only be over.
However, this book had a "happy" ending. Unfortunately, it's little consolation after everything read.
SO...in conclusion, I was totally enjoying it in the beginning... and then I freaked out... :| ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
It's been a while, but I remember this being a sweet story. I had a hard time finding the back cover copy online, so I thought I'd post here:
1885 - Nebraska
Nettie is arrested doing God's work.
When Nettie Franklin shares her temperance views with the local saloon customers, she lands herself in one of Mesquite, Nebraska's two jail cells. And there's no help from the town's only judge--who happens to own the saloon.
Nettie's only escape is through marriage to Riley O'Connor, a man she barely knows. Her temporary husband can both infuriate and fascinate her. As the weeks pass, Nettie sees that God may be using the situation to bring needed changes to her life.
Can a marriage of convenience bear all things--including love? Will God's work include making this temporary marriage a permanent arrangement?
Nebraska July, 1885 Nettie Franklin had decided that the best place to carry on her temperance campaign was at the saloon. Saloon customers and the saloon owner did not share her opinions and took offense at her abuse of their freedoms. It just happened that the saloon owner was none other than Judge Albert Balsh. When Nettie interuppted one of his customers and poured out his drink, the judge had had enough. When she would not pay for the drink she had poured out, she was arrested. While in jail she met a man named Riley O'Connor. The judge had warned him not to come back drunk to his town or he'd land in jail. Riley had changed and did not drink anymore. He came to Mesquite to thank Abe Wilkins for patching him up and putting his life on the right path. Unfortunately, his head got in the way of an iron skillet when a couple was fighting. Judge Balsh saw him staggering and threw him in jail. Riley insisted that he was not drunk but the judge would not believe him. He was mad at both Riley and Nettie and wanted to let them rot in jail. His wife was Nettie's best friend and she tried to help Nettie. Her suggestion: Nettie could marry and the judge would let her out. And then after several days they could have the marriage annulled. Maybe Riley would consent to be Nettie's temporary husband. But the plan would only work if the judge cooperated. But would he? Ms. Beth, 2008
Enjoyable read, I had to stay up to read the book in one sitting. Two people who knew of one another in a different town met up in jail in another town curtsy of the judge. The judge owned the saloon and he wasn't having any temperance movement swaying his customers. Even when the judge knew of one particular drinker was abusing his women folk at home. Getting married was the Get Out Of Jail Card.... but both thought what did God want for them to have done? Being married was very scary for both parties and the Judge wasn't going to annul them either. When separated the love grew between them and the woman had to learn to trust her husband and not go by her experiences of the past.
What I did like: This story helps illustrate why certain ways of approaching a problem are better than others. Sometimes a direct approach is not always best, and loving someone into the right decision often works better than preaching them there.
What I didn’t like: AT times, I got bogged down in the writing, and just wanted the story to end. However, when I read a little further, the plot picked up and I became interested again.
Christians would love this story for a good Sunday afternoon read.
This was a great read right up until the misunderstanding about 'The Watering Hole'. That part was absurd. Other than that it was a read that I enjoyed. The characters had a nice chemistry between them and each was rounded out well. The romance was believable and heartwarming. The ending tied up all loose ends.
I like the way this story illustrates the need for forgiveness, perseverance and commitment to making a marriage work. Love is more about the effort one puts into building a relationship and maintaining it than it is about the feelings one has about the relationship.
Unlikely scenario becomes believable through characterization. Would recommend to a Christian who enjoys love stories, has a taste for historical fiction and has a vivid imagination.
DiAnn Mills is an awesome author. This series makes you fall in love with the characters...you really get to know them...they are stubborn, loving, annoying, human.
So far, I've really enjoyed anything I've read by Diann Mills.
