Geoffrey MacGriffin of Clan Matheson could not believe he’d been bested by a female archer. As a new guardsman who’d recently joined the clan, Grif needed to prove himself to the visiting commander, the formidable Logan Ramsay, in order to be selected for an important mission for King Robert the Bruce. Grif drew his dagger to teach the annoying lass a lesson—that men are always smarter and more skillful than women. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as he had hoped. And on top of his humiliation in the mock battle, he was gleefully informed that the lass he’d tried to kill was not only Logan’s great niece, but also the daughter of Clan Matheson’s chieftain.
Isla Matheson had earned the reputation of being one of the best archers in all of Scotland—but she hated battle. She was not the least bit interested in going on a mission that took her away from Black Isle and her family. Not for the laird, not even for the Bruce himself. Nor was she interested in any lad, despite her scandalous cousin urging her to at least try kissing. Even if she were curious about such a distasteful activity, the very last man she’d choose to kiss would be the sore-loser guard who insisted men were superior to women in all things. Funny, she was pretty sure she had won their challenge…
Too bad they were both chosen for the king’s mission…and ordered to work together to infiltrate Carlisle Castle as spies, searching for a man with the cruelest reputation in all of England. The result was a clash and adventure neither Grif nor Isla could have predicted—involving capture, torture, and…aye, a bit of kissing. By the end, they’d each learned an important lesson that made them see the other in a whole new light. The only question was…would they survive to confess their growing love?
Keira Montclair is the pen name of an author who lives in South Carolina with her husband. She writes fast-paced historical romance, often with children as secondary characters.
If she’s not writing, she prefers to spend time with her grandchildren. She’s worked as a high school math teacher, a registered nurse, and an office manager. She loves ballet, mathematics, puzzles, learning anything new, and creating new characters for her readers to fall in love with.
She considers her work done well when her readers shed tears over her stories, but there’s always a happy ending! Her bestselling series is a family saga that follows two medieval Scottish clans through three generations and now numbers over fifty books.
4.2 stars This one ended abruptly! Grif aka Geoffrey has backward views against women! He had a horrible upbringing watching his dad and Uncle abuse women and he and his brother Steinn! Isla is a skilled archer and beloved daughter and granddaughter! She has only seen women loved and honored in her clan! She has heard that women can be treated differently but never experienced it until Grif! Grif voiced his unpopular opinions and almost lost his life! These two tumble deep in adversity and adventure where they have to rely on each other! When they have found a place of trust a vicious accusation would see Grif harmed and imprisoned! Can there be a HEA? Is Grif the man that could love and protect Isla above all else? Bravo
I was pretty excited for another spin off of the clan grant series. This being the first one felt a bit like there was a lot of recap, which makes sense, but also I’m not a huge fan of. Isla and Grif are not my favorite couple through the series, and sometimes the dialogue was a bit cringe but overall the book was pretty consistent with the other series and I enjoyed it! I can’t wait for Maitland’s story!
I love a new series with new characters and this opening book did not disappoint .... we saw a few past characters and some exciting new ones! This story was full of suspense with kidnapping, torture, war strategies, plus humorous situations, entertaining bantering, strong women and the men who will love them.
Isla Matheson is a highly trained archer, and her reputation is well known. She has definite opinions on her role as a young woman. Now after besting one of the new members of the clan on the training field, he is a sore loser and that won't do - she will show him that women can be just as smart, trained and fierce on the battlefield in many capacities!
Geoffrey MacGriffin aka Grif of Clan Matheson is new to the clan and needs to prove himself to the leader. But when a female from the clan bests him in training, he is upset. He respects women but doesn't think they belong on the battlefield., and now, he discovers that Isla, the woman he tried to kill, is the great niece of Logan Ramsay and the daughter of the ama the son Clan Chieftain.
Needless to say, this sets Grif and Isla off on the wrong foot, but they have a spy mission to fulfil for the cause but along the way the hate and bantering lessens, a new respect for strong women, blooming romance, some spice and finally love brings them to a HEA. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to Book 2 in this series! I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

FANTASTIC!!! The Scot's Conflict by Keira Montclair is the first in her new series Highland Hunters. This is a spinoff of the series Highland Healers which is my favorite Keira Montclair series so I am so happy to have this continued. What I loved about this book is how strong the women are and it totally cracked me up with the “Brain Fixing” which you will have to read this book to understand what I am talking about. This book is so very well written and so very original. I found the characters to be wonderful and intense, great banter, had the real feel of the medieval era, easy to read and just fantastic!!! Keira is a favorite of mine and she never disappoints. This story has a lady who is one of the best archers in all of Scotland, a new guardsman that had a cruel father and uncle who drank to much, being separated from his brother, going on their first mission for Robert the Bruce, being captured, tortured, rescue, accused of beating a woman, being arrested, thinking men’s feet are disgusting, killing to survive, lies, learning that women are just as fierce as men and falling in love. I am so highly recommending you read this book and I also recommend you read the series, Highland Healers to learn all of the characters. Trust me… they will not disappoint!!!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
The Scot’s Conflict by Keira Montclair Highland Hunters Series Book One Geoffrey MacGriffin, “Grif,” is a guard at Clan Matheson. He went from living with his cruel father to living with his equally mean uncle, as his father left him there and took off with his younger brother, Steinn. But would make more of his life than his dad. And he could prove himself as he was called to go on a mission to save Scotland from the English. The only problem…women were part of their group. Isla Matheson is the daughter of Ethan Matheson and Jennet nee Ramsay. Granddaughter of Quade and Brenna. Grif got on her nerves. He dared to believe women weren’t as wise or good at fighting as men. As they go on their mission, Isla slowly begins to understand how sheltered she’s been. Realizing that not every clan allowed their women to be like the Ramsay, Grant, and Matheson women. And Grif is learning that his hateful father also put some wrong ideas in his head. Page-turning adventure of this excellent new series. **Sexual content https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
WONDERFUL 1st Book in this new series! A new generation takes over, swordsmen and lady archers, Ramsays, Grants, Mathesons and Menzies, so well trained King Robert calls them to action, fighters for Scotland all! The famous Logan Ramsay is charged with the task of putting a team together to send covertly to help King Robert. This is Isla Matheson and Geoffrey "Grif" MacGriffin's story. Grif respects women but does not believe a woman's place should be on the battlefield. Oops. Isla beats him in training and that begins their rocky start, their journey to finding their HEA and Grif learning that women can and do belong in battle and are as smart or smarter than men.
A captivating read once again by Keira Montclair, writer extraorinaire! This book has it all, action, suspense, romance, humor and steamy love scenes. Loved, loved, loved this book!!
I was given an ARC of this book and this is absolutely my honest review.
Lifes Lessons To Be Learned: A fast-paced exciting story about Geoffrey (Gif) and Isla. We follow them as their relationship blossoms and grows by leaps and bounds. Two people from very different family situations. Gif's abusive childhood and Isla's overly protective loving family. They both have obstacles to overcome before they find a happy ending. The plot of the story involves their romance and a dangerous mission against the English. He is guardsman and she is an expert archer. The story has many heart pounding and gut-wrenching moments, lessons while exploring passion were well written and enjoyable. The mission is not over and the next I'm sure will bring more thrills and will have lots of dangerous encounters: maybe another romance. I truly enjoyed the fast pace of this thrilling story along with wonderful, intriguing characters. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
This is an exciting and love story. I was completely captivated with this book. I have been with this huge Family from the beginning and have never been disappointed. As usual I love the story and especially the Hero and Heroine as well as the other characters. I jumped into story from the beginning and held there until the very end. It was full of excitement, intrigue, and romance with some classy sensuality in just the right amount. The only sad thing was the cliffhanger at the HEA ending. I wanted to know now what happened next right away. Can’t wait to read next book. I highly recommend this as I have enjoyed all of her previous books. Please as a favor to yourself, I recommend you start with the first book and read in order. This will be a journey with this exciting Family, the best in the literary Family.
I had a hard time with this book. Maybe I missed an intervening series, but no matter. The plot was OK, but ultimately it was a little too contrived. Isla and Griff were captured by the English, then both were miraculously rescued. Of course, they found their HEA. I just had a hard time following the story. How could it be so easy?
Griff’s connection (or lack thereof) to his family was simple to understand. Isla’s connection to hers was much more confusing. Yes, she has a deep love of her parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles/etc. But there was no background/buildup for this. Especially her connection to sister Charlotte, which didn’t even feel healthy. Err…what am I missing?
Anyway, I’m on to the next book. Maybe I’ll be more in tune with Reyna and Wulf.
Isla is a female, and a warrior. Grif can't believe it, his uncle and his sire taught him women were inferior. At two and twenty years, though, Grif has a lot to learn, but it doesn't take him long to realize that women can excel at a lot of things.
This book was different, in that the females fought alongside the men. A couple of progressive clans turned misogyny on its ear. I loved Grif's character arc as he fell in love with Isla and found out how amazing she was. Isla, an expert archer, shot an arrow right through his heart.
An entertaining love story, I can't wait to get my hands on Reyna's book!
If you love all things Scottish, animals, kids, battles, adventure with just the right amount of humor mixed in while following beloved characters you've met before, this is the author for you. I have read every single one of this authors books and they just get better and better. She writes strong, sassy female characters and strong, masculine male characters that will have you crying one moment, laughing the next and rooting out loud the whole time!
Well, Keira Montclair is a fantastic author and I find all of her books are just a joy to read. This book was extraordinary. I love how she brought in all of the past characters to catch readers up that have not read all of her books. I have truly never read a book as quickly as I read this one. I just could not put it down and I loved every minute. I would highly suggest that you read this book and all of the other books that she writes. I love how the Grants and the Ramseys continue and live on in their offspring. EXCELLENT!!!
Grif is a soldier in the Matheson clan. Isla is the daughter of the second son of that clan. She is also an archer. When Grif and Isla are both asked to participate in a special mission to support Robert the Bruce they are drawn together. Even though they had a rocky beginning and have completely different backgrounds, their attraction can’t be denied. This story is action packed with twists and turns. I loved Grif! There are also familiar characters from previous books. Off to the next one.
Love this author regarding Scottish books, the clan Grant and Ramsey stories are my favorite. Very enjoyable read although Grif and Isla story had suspense, kidnapping, fighting and very strong sassy female characters, Grif and Isla characters were not very strong Isla seem a bit weak and not fully grownup. Love that characters from clan Ramsey, Grant and Mathieson were part of this story. Can't wait to read Reyna's story.
Griff is a new guardsman but knows for sure that lasses shouldn't be in battle and that men are smarter. He is in for quite the shock when a lass beats him in archery and this whole clan believes lasses have brains. Isla is determined to show him the error of his ways. In doing so, she falls a bit more for him everyday. Good writing and it hits the Scottish historical romance read.
I wanted to give it 5 stars but it’s so like other stories in the family. I was a tiny bit disappointed. I loved the characters and storyline. I’m glad they survived all they went through and now to take them back to Berwick Castle to rescue Reyna. There is no way Isla and Grif would not go back. On to Shona Thompson’s brand new book. 💜💜💜💜💜
I have read all of the Books over 3 generations, however I was surprised there was no mention of the youngest brother and his wife Tara and I was disappointed that this series jumped so ahead with no explanation of the barons each brother had , and new characters were introduced without any mention of parentage or which clan they were from.
Isla and Griffee met, fell in love instantly! They were both on a mission to obey a request from King Robert. Even though they got off to a rocky start, a misunderstanding actually, they soon found an attraction that brought them together. A lot of action and romance.
Well that is quite the cliffhanger with Reyna being kidnapped by Wulfstan Gray!!! Now that is truly like a bomb waiting to explode. Isla and Grif had quite the travel experience together. I did not expect THAT end to this story for sure. Now I will await Reyna's story, which should truly be a story to read. Thank you Keira!
Isla of Black Isle is an archer as are many of her female relatives. One guards man has to be shown that women are as clever as men as well as sometimes better with weapons s Isla and the guards man, Griff, are paired together in mission to spy on British
So good to be back in Grant world! Even though this is several generations behind Alex. Love to see the families and the new characters as they continue to tell the story! Great read and great teaser for the next book! Can't wait!
I loved this continuation of the Grant and Ramsey families. Grif and Isla made a perfect couple. I have to say Keira has a great talent for always getting her characters out of a bind in the most surprising way! You won’t want to miss this one.
I loved Isla and Griff's story. Isla is confident in her abilities as an archery woman and griff is a typical man who thinks women belong anywhere except in battle. But she proves him wrong, especially when they have to work and ride on a mission together. Exceptional read. HEA.
I loved this story and the continued following of this family. I have followed from the beginning and I love the touch of checking in with the older generation. Thank you for not forgetting them.
Another winner. I love that the stories are continuing with next generations. It's great to see the children are grown and starting lives of their own. I look forward to the other books in this new series.
A very enjoyable read. A lot of substance, regarding several clans, the way they allowed women to participate in wars and some love interest. A nice reprieve from some of the books I’ve read with a lot of sex, foul language and violence.
This story did not disappoint. Another great story that Ms. Montclair has woven that catches you as soon as you start reading until you finish the book.
