Rate this book
A librarian with a secret. A prince looking for redemption. A dark discovery that will force them to confront their truths.

Astrea Sovna is destined to die. As a Lightbringer, she’s expected to serve the Helosian government as a battlefield healer; but when the court seer—Astrea’s uncle—has a vision of her being killed in the line of duty, he forbids her to reveal her powers.

Until now, Astrea has gone unnoticed as a junior librarian. But when she gets reassigned to a diplomatic project to strengthen ties between Helosia and one of its neighbors, she finds herself saddled with her past, in the form of returned war hero and her ex-best friend, Prince Varojin Auris.

Forced to work together, Astrea soon learns that although Varojin has been out of her life for years, he’s still the kind, patient friend she remembers. As they navigate old friendships and imperial politics, the pair discovers that the mysterious shadows stalking the city are leaving a trail of murder victims in their wake. And when Astrea becomes a target, a dear friend gets caught in the crossfire…

As Astrea and Varojin begin searching for answers, they realize there is much more to the emperor’s project than political niceties. If the shadows aren’t stopped, Astrea’s future—and the security of the entire continent—hangs in the balance.

So I originally DNFed UNDER DARKENED SKIES last year (around 45%) but decided to try it again this year. Unfortunately, the incredibly slow pacing and minimal action were still present until almost 80% into the book, so while I finished it, it was hard. This is a slow burn so not much really happens between our MCs in this first book in the series but I would have liked a little more attention paid to the general chemistry between Jin and Astrea. They almost didn't feel like they used to even be friends because there's so much disconnect between them. I'm not sure if that's because they haven't talked in 8 years or if it was the writing.

While the plot and world was unique, the overall writing felt a bit plain and clinical. I kept waiting for more emotion and I think this is also what affected my above statement about Astrea and Jin's chemistry. I kept waiting to see an actual shift in how Astrea (our only POV character) felt and thought about Jin; I kept waiting for more tension over the fact that a shadow person was hunting Astrea; I kept waiting for more worry over what was going on in Helosia. It wasn't until the last 15% that things really ramped up and we got a lot of emotion and action, which Unfortunately included Astrea making some really silly decisions that felt completely out of character.

Now UNDER DARKENED SKIES wasn't all bad, though my review so far makes it seem that way; on a positive note I liked Astrea and Jin as individual characters even if I wasn't sure of them as a couple. I related to Astrea's anxiety and her more cautious nature. I actually loved that we had a fantasy FMC who wasn't a badass right out of the gate, instead she had to still find her voice and her power and that was refreshing. Jin was also likable, though pretty mysterious, since we don't have his POV; he obviously had feelings for Astrea and I can tell he was secretly a soft marshmallow inside. I also really liked the side characters and the found family vibes with Astrea's friends and Jin's old teammate.

I don't plan to continue this series but I do think readers who enjoy very slow fantasies that build as the series goes might enjoy this one more.

A WONDERFUL, AMAZING DEBUT NOVEL.
I’m so grateful to have received an ARC of Under Darkened skies, I loved this magical world. I can’t wait to read how the story will continue. This is a fantasy book with 1920s vibes, (I LOVED THAT!) The world building was really good, it explained everything. In UDS we have a magic system and political issues. This is the first book of a series and I can tell all of you that I don’t want to miss a book! I’m going to love this series, I feel it!
However the story it’s a little heavy at first it’s because it’s high fantasy, but it’s really a good story. The side characters are very interesting and their powers are too! I can’t wait to read more about them! And maybe have some of their povs too! The relationship between Az and her friends are really cute, they always protect each other.
Varojin was one of my favorite characters. I want to know more about his story and the years he spent in the army.
The relationship between our main couple it’s like a rollercoaster, they haven’t seen each other in a lot of time but when they were kids they were best friends, so you have here ex friends to lovers troupe. (I would add mutual pinning but it’s a secret to themselves) they have to work together so we have fake dating, one bed, forced proximity and I’m here I will protect you troupe. They really care for each other and I like how both of them get what they wanted, the forgiveness of the other. I cannot wait to see how the relationship of my babies’ goes in the next book. Just saying that the book did not have a lot of romance, but I also think that the slowburn romance in this book between the main couple was very interesting, intense and cute. And that’s enough for me, I LOVED IT! And I think there’s a lot of potential between other characters👀…Honestly I’m both excited and scared for what H.E will have for us through next book, but in a good way, I can’t wait for book two!
If you enjoy reading fantasy with a good story plot, magic, mystery, secrets, a very promising world building you should really read UDS.

This is a slow-burning, richly woven fantasy that combines gaslamp elements with a traditional magic system. Astrea is a junior librarian who has hidden her magic following her uncle’s vision that foretold her death in battle. Mages are conscripted to the military in this world. However, her quiet life is upended when she is reassigned to a diplomatic project, forcing her to confront her past with her former best friend and returned war hero, Prince Jin.

Bauman takes her time in building the world, explaining the magic system and setting the stage for the unfolding drama. The pacing is deliberate, gradually escalating the tension and drawing readers into the complex political landscape. For those who enjoy a story that allows them to fully immerse themselves in the setting and get to know the characters, this approach is a welcome one, though it might be slower for readers seeking immediate action.

The characters are the best part. The slow-burn romance and the estranged friends-to-lovers trope are handled well. The relationship feels earned and satisfying. Bauman excels in character development, not just for the leads but also for the supporting cast. Each character feels well-rounded and integral to the plot.

The mystery aspect is equally compelling. The shadows stalking the city and the trail of murder victims add a layer of suspense. As Astrea and Jin delve into the investigation, the slowly evolving mystery made me eager for them to piece together the clues.

If you enjoy a story that gradually builds its intrigue and has a lot of emotional depth, this book is definitely worth a read. And the audiobook is beautifully done! HIGHLY recommend the audio version.

This book! Wow, just wow! I fell in love with this book when I saw the cover and the story itself didn't disappoint me.

This book held a lot of mystery that slowly got some clearer near the ending. It also held so many emotions. I almost cried when Astrea was doubting herself so much. She really felt like a real person who isn't perfect and strong from the beginning but cares so much for her friends.

Throughout the book there was a lot of tension between Astrea and Jin and honestly It made me so curious why that was, what there history between them was. Sometimes I also had the urge to shake these characters, cause sometimes they got these brilliant ideas that just asked for problems.

The story was original and I just wanted to read further, to discover this amazing world, to fall in love with these characters and to unravel the mysteries. And what a story, I just couldn't put this book down. And what an ending, I need answers! I am so excited to continue this serie and can't wait for the next book😆

Last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an earc.

the premise of this book is really interesting and overall I really like the characters, but there is such missed potential with this worldbuilding. it’s so fascinating how the setting feels like the industrial 1800s with an imperial system, but the actual culture in relation to the other nations is so rarely explored. which is sad because the war aspect and the countries conflict with neighboring kingdoms is like a key plot point. i had a hard time even telling which country is which because they are so rarely elaborated on. i also thought the prophecy which caused the main character to hide her powers was going to be explored, so imagine my surprise when it was just brushed over?? like isn’t that the whole reason for the entire plot. idk there were a lot of very interesting creative decisions taken by the author which made this reading experience less than perfect. with that being said, i really enjoyed the experience of reading this book; it was really well executed.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy captivating, slow-burn fantasy plots.

The air of mystery surrounding Astrea and Kalama kept me engaged with a steady stream of revelations and questions. Although it's not the most fast-paced book, I appreciated this, as it allowed me to truly immerse myself in the story and connect with the characters and world. It was a compelling and suspenseful reading experience; I was never bored and finished the story in less than two days.

Astrea, the main character, is a relatable 20-something who struggles with anxiety and the need to keep her healing magic a secret in an empire at war. Though she struggles and makes mistakes, Astrea also shows gradual growth and development that felt natural for her as a character. I’m excited to see how she develops in future books.

At the beginning of the book, Astrea is given a new assignment by the emperor and forced to work with Prince Varojin, her former best friend and the emperor's son. She must navigate the need to hide her magical powers while seeing Varojin for the first time in years. However, clues throughout the story suggest that something more is happening in Kalama’s shadows. Around 25% in, the storyline takes a dramatic turn away from the emperor's project when Astrea's life is threatened. Everything after that is complex and layered, but I don't want to include spoilers, so I'll leave it at that. The story ends on a mild cliffhanger, giving us a clear direction for the next book while also leaving us with some questions about the emperor, Astrea, and the conspiracy surrounding her.

The supporting cast were diverse and realistic, with a strong sense of familiarity between them and each one having a distinct personality. While Adi and Cressida were my favorites, I also liked Eliana and Nicos and hope to see more of them in the next book. A few more scenes with the Nikaphoroses and Saros may have been nice. I'm personally very curious about them, especially Astrea's uncle Saros and his enigmatic nature. He obviously deeply cares about Astrea. However, his fickleness and stubbornness left me wondering about what secrets he may be keeping and why.

The slow burn romance between Astrea and Varojin was full of palpable tension. They both clearly missed each other during the years Varojin was away from the capital. Though Astrea initially hesitates to clear the air between them, once she musters up the courage to do so, the resulting vulnerability was powerful for both of them. I hope we get to see more of this in the future.

The elemental-based magic system had a range of abilities showcased throughout the story. The handful of action sequences were gripping while also reflecting Astrea's lack of magical training. I do hope she learns new skills related to her Lightbringing in future books, as I'd love to see that branch of magic in greater action.

In short, everything about this book felt fresh and unique. Looking forward to the next installment!

Book review:
HE Bauman's post-industrial society filled with elemental magic was such a fun world to dive into. I loved getting to follow Astrea, our FMC and resident librarian, as she is tasked to not only worked a diplomatic mission for the crown, but do it with her estranged childhood friend (ouch). H.E. does a wonder job of taking this plot and taking the reader on a twisty tale of shifting politics, murder, secrets, and romance. Honestly, it checked all the boxes for me. The book is a wonderful split between H.E.'s realistic character development and twisty plot.

I love love love the developing relationship between Astrea and Jin -- childhood friends to reluctant allies (well, on Astrea's part) to maybe more. H.E. Bauman has a way of writing these delicious tension-filled and emotional couples that I just cannot help but root for. I also a huge fan of the side characters that make up their found family crew from Jin's sister to Cress to some others we meet along the way.
I also love the diversity of the characters from Astrea as a neurodiverse FMC to H.E.'s queer normative society.

This series truly kept me on my toes as I followed Astrea and Jin on their mad dash to unmask a killer -- though by the end you'll start to realize that there is much more going than a simple murder mystery. And you will happily follow these to over the steep drop that is the cliffhanger at the end. But don't worry, book 2 is already out and you can feel free to binge it.

Audio review:
I listened to the audio of this book, so I couldn't not shout out Brielle Rose, the narrator. Brielle did a wonderful job giving each of the characters distinct voices and as well as making sure the voices and accents were discernible. She really does an amazing job delivering a lively performance that keeps the reader engrossed in the story and the characters.

3.5⭐️

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I’d like to thank H.E. Bauman for her trust, and for sending me a copy of her book.

I was very excited to start this book, and the story did not disappoint me.

What really amazed me is the magical system created in here. There are different types of power, and it’s a very complex system. It took me a little while to grasp it, as did understanding the whole political system, and the situation the country is in.
The book starts a bit slow, and things really got started at about 30% of the book, the first 30% were mostly setting the story, the characters, and details that were necessary to understand everything.

I liked the characters, even though Astrea sometimes stemmed very « childish » to me, as in very naive and innocent. I would have liked her to grow a bit of a backbone and just demand answers when they were due, especially in her relationships with Jin and with her uncle. Some things were off, but she chose to just let them slip. I’m sure that she will grow stronger in the second book, and I can’t wait to see her character develop.
I liked Jin, he is sweet, nice, and I want to learn more about him. His past must be traumatic, and I want to learn how he became who he is now. Also, the way he cares for Astrea just made my heart melt. I hope she’ll see this for what it is.
I would love to see more of Cress and Adi (do I feel couple potential between those two ? Time will tell), and Nicos is just my sweet baby, this man deserves his own book. If anybody hurts him, they’ll answer directly to me.

UDS is a very nice upper-YA book, with potential to grow into something even better with the sequel. The writing is great, and I know that I will definitely read the second book, as week as Jin’s story, because I really want to know what happens next.
It ends on a mild-cliffhanger, one that will leave you wanting more, without making you throw insults at the author and dunk your kindle into the trash.

What can I say except H.E just wrote my ALL TIME favorite story! And while there was so much pain and difficulties throughout this book, i’ve found myself rooting for each character!

Az you brave little lightbringer, having to keep your secret and work for your uncle Saros at the local library in Kalama. i think it’s safe to say you triumphed beautifully by the end of the book. Protecting your friends, trying to figure out why Jin has been acting like such a weridoooo, making sure you stay alive and keep your secret. You’ve endured so much!! your character has just BEGUN!

Jin, I think you’ve had a lot of time to heal but you’ve also had a lot of time to reconnect with friends. and though you have it really rough given your father is the emperor I think you’ve bested him so far, because no amount of politics or war or evil plans can come between you and your friends and i think as a main MMC (a cinnamon roll 😍) you’re doing all you can with the cards that were given to you. and though the battle has just begun i know you’ll get through it. I believe in you.

Through this book there was so many ups, downs, sweet romance, evil and even some fun! H.e Bauman simply created a world I would love to be in. And we don’t know what’s going to happen to Helosia or Kalama, i’m really excited for the next book! and cannot wait to see where it takes ME AZ & JIN 🥹🩷😭

And emperor suckksss and fck Nazarov 😂😂 yall are gonna get yours soon enough.

I can't believe release day is tomorrow!!! I absolutely love this world, these characters and every little detail that H.E. gave us!

I have missed diving into a book where world building, explaining the magic system, and political intrigue are done right! Not too long and wordy and not too short and glossed over! While others have said the beginning started slow, I look at the series as a whole, full of novellas and more books to come! It's imperative that we understand the world and how it works early! And I thought Bauman did an excellent job giving us exciting tidbits within the buildup!

The slow burn? Immaculate. I think about Astrea and Jin daily. Their relationship is like a rollercoaster and I'm here for the freaking ride!

I felt all the emotions reading this book, and some parts even had me laughing out loud. I love that in a fantasy book! The side characters were well fleshed out and I absolutely loved them!

The best way to summarize Under Darkened Skies: fresh, colorful, moody and magical! I'm both excited and terrified for what Bauman will put us through next! 😂

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It’s been a while since I went into a book blind and enjoyed it this much. I received my ARC a while ago and honestly forgot that I had it until a couple days ago when I realized I was supposed to write the review soon. Luckily this book drew me in and kept me hooked the whole time, and I finished it in just a couple days.
To be clear, this is not elite literature. It is very much a fun fantasy novel, if a well written and intriguing one, but honestly that’s part of what I liked about it. It’s the perfect book to read if you’re looking for something new and interesting while still being light enough to be easily accessible.
The plot is interesting, the characters are distinct and likable, the romance has actual chemistry, and the world building is stable and interesting. I honestly don’t have anything negative to say, the only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is that it’s not going to change my life.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and romance!

A really enjoyable Romantasy, it wasn’t overly heavy on the Romance side which I really enjoyed because it gave a lot more time for and emphasis to the world building and fantasy plot. The slow burn for me was a little too slow and I found myself a bit frustrated with the how long it took them to admit it to themselves. Though, I am hugely looking forward to some spice in the second book 😉

I really liked the characters and the setting they were both rich and well developed, the mystery of what is going on is slowly unfurling and I can’t wait to see where the group goes from here. I will be picking up book two for sure.

The mixture of characters and the friend group was a huge part of how much I enjoyed this story, there’s variety and the relationships are really great.

This was a huge audiobook at 16.5 hours so if you enjoy a good large fantasy with lots of detail in the world and great character building like i do, then I would definitely recommend. The audio was really good and its single POV which I think works perfectly as an audiobook.

Enjoyed This Thoroughly

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great, the pacing was on point, the magic was neat, the mystery about what was going on was perfect! I think there would have been more depth to the romance subplot with a dual POV but that would've just added to the book. Definitely not a negative that it didn't have one. Clearly the MMC had it bad and the FMC still had him solidly in the friend zone. I really enjoyed this one! Can't wait to hop into book 2!!!

This was such a a wonderful read/listen! I loved learning about the world and the characters! I also totally fell for our MMC. Our FMC oozes a wonderful quiet strength especially as the plot advances. The villains are wonderfully hateable. I also loved the magic system- I'm a sucker for a magical empath. I also adored the really strong mental health representation! I can't wait to continue the series!!

3⭐️ I love the magic system, it has so much potential and I can’t wait to see how it develops.

I loved seeing the subtle neurodiverse rep in the FMC (her unique magic gives her what appears like sensory processing challenges) and mental health rep in the MMC (after returning from war).

The main reason this wasn’t a 4+ was pacing. This book is very slow, with a lot of descriptions of events and activities that ultimately felt unnecessary. The FMC is a librarian (which is what drew me to this book!) but the plot for most of the book centres around research for an event that has been commissioned by the emperor, which just gave this sense of waiting for the story to really begin. It felt almost like a slice-of-life fantasy and scenes are set up in ways that you think something is about to happen but it doesn’t, and is very restrained. For me it needed a lot of that edited out and more plot and tension added in.

0🌶️ in book 1, but I get the sense that it will heat up later in the series. Tropes include friends to lovers, one bed, one motorbike (I’m calling it as similar to one horse! 😂), forced proximity, fake dating, “quick let’s make out so we don’t get caught snooping” and fancy ball type event dress ups—whatever those tropes are called! Both very fun :)

Overall I’m invested in the characters and keen to continue with the series—where it left off has the potential to open the story up so I’m looking forward to picking up book 2 :)

First, I want to thank H.E. Bauman for the ALC (Advanced Listener Copy).

“Under Darkened Skies” by H.E. Bauman is the first book in the Darkened Skies Saga. The books follow Astrea and Varojin (Az and Jin) along with Ellie, Cress, Adi, and Nicos as they are trying to figure out why there are suddenly shadows showing up around the city, specifically on recently dead bodies. As they are working through this, they are also having to face the void of eight years of friendship while Jin was away fighting for his father, Emperor Aelius. There is magic, both hidden and well-known, romance, adventure, comedy, and so much more!

Okay, I really, really loved this book!!! I fell in love with this author’s writing when I read her newest book, “The Sundered Stars.” While this is her first book, the writing was not lacking in any way! I still enjoyed it just as much and I’m so excited the rest of this series is already out!! Bauman does such a phenomenal job at progressing the story just right and keeping you engaged throughout. Also, her slow burn romances are not excruciating and painful. They progress in a logical way. The banter in her books is perfect and provides moments of chuckles in the midst of the danger going on.

The world building is also very well done! This is a fantasy with modern technologies. However, the world it’s in is completely of her own creation. I was able to picture everything that was going on without it being overly detailed. Also, there was movement in the story. They didn’t just stay in one place. They traveled all over the city of Kalama and even traveled to a neighboring city and explored there as well!

The characters in the story were absolutely wonderful as well. Something that I look for is how an author portrays all the variations of relationships that a single character may have. No two interactions are going to be identical. I really felt this was well executed throughout the story. Each relationship between characters had its own nuances that hinted towards the type of relationship between them. Some were close like siblings, others parental, and then even distant but courteous. And the characters themselves kept their personalities through all of these interactions. Something else, all the main characters are lovable. None of them truly got on my nerves. Any of their “bad habits” were explained by some past encounter.

As this is an audiobook review, I also need to comment on the narration. Brielle Rose did a phenomenal job! My only struggle was the very beginning. She ended sentences a little breathy, however, once she got into the story that went away and I was completely swept into the story! She had different tones and voices for the different characters and her pace was excellent! I typically have to listen at 1.2x speed as I’m a fast reader, but I was able to listen at normal speed the entire time! This is the only book series on Audible that she’s listed on, so this may be her first narration. If so, then she really did such an excellent job! Her narration alone I rate at a 4.75 stars. (Again, it would be a five if the beginning had been a little more fluid).

Overall, “Under Darkened Skies” by H.E. Bauman is a well rounded, action packed, fantasy romance that everyone needs to pick up and read! As far as content, it is intended for adults. There is cursing, although not overwhelming, and, in this book, just kissing. However, I do know from the dialogue in this book and from what I’ve seen, there are going to be open door bedroom scenes in the later novels in the series. I don’t really know what else to say other than GO BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

CW: violence, referenced loss of a parent, death, some others

Thank you to the author for the gifted audiobook!

When junior librarian Astrea is summoned by the emperor, she thinks he’s discovered her hidden Lightbringer magic. Instead, she’s tasked with researching and planning an exposition for a diplomatic gathering. Required to work alongside her former best friend, Jin, Astrea never expected to end up in the middle of a conspiracy backed by dark magic.

I used to listen to audiobooks all the time. As in, I was tearing through multiple, long books in a couple of weeks. It’s been a while since that was the case, though, so this was my first foray back into the world of reading a book for the first time as an audio. I am so pleased that this was the book to bring me back into this particular reading format.

The narrator is fantastic. The main characters have voices that are distinct enough to pick up on the switch even without dialogue tags, and even the secondary and background characters have a wide variety of sounds that make it easy to understand what’s going on. If you don’t listen to audiobooks, you might not realize how important this is, but I’ve definitely encountered some audios that don’t do this, and it gets really confusing really fast. The narrator has the perfect voice for the FMC, and the rest of the sound and vibes are wonderfully peaceful without being boring or monotone.

Now, on to the actual story. Listen, everything was fine until those last couple of chapters. We were just roaming around, prepping for this party, having interpersonal character growth moments. Everything was going great. And then we escalated. And by the time we got to those last few chapters I was *stressed* and then the book ended. The audacity. Thankfully, this is a completed series and I can go right into the next one for answers, but still.

Jokes (mostly) aside, this was a really fun story. The plot is interesting and kept my attention, which is no small feat when the squirrels in my brain wanted to run away with one of the six trains of thought I have at any point in time. The characters are likable (or wholly unlikable, depending on which one you’re referring to), and the dynamics between them are wonderfully depicted. Our FMC is a little different from my more recent reads in that she’s significantly less stabby, but honestly it feels really realistic because she’s got 0 experience in that area, and she’d really just like to go back to her usual routine.

The pacing here is very much on the ‘slow and steady’ side of things. If you’re wanting tons of action at all times, this isn’t it. I do have hope that things are going to pick up more now that we’ve really gotten into things, but even if we stayed at this same pacing I don’t think I’d be mad at it. It’s a good book to just ride along with, if that makes sense. It’s giving steampunk/gas-lamp-ish fantasy, and it works.

I don’t really know how better to explain this book, but I’m excited to get into the next one and see where our characters end up.

4.5/5 (rounded up to 5)

Set in a world where magic is not only real, but an essential part of civilian and military life, Under darkened skies follows a group of early twenties magic wielders (mages) as they are confronted with and must uncover a new kind of dark and deadly magic. Told from the perspective of a reserved and studious FMC, this book is a fantastic blend of high fantasy and almost contemporary, cozy friendship/relationship dynamics. As a YA-leaning introduction (later books are much more adult) to this universe of political intrigue, war and magic, this book is a near perfect opener to a complex five book series filled with intense action, deadly betrayal and powerful romance.

Our FMC (Astrea) is a highly relatable, independent, academically-minded librarian, who is hiding her magic in an effort to avoid being drafted into the military but, in doing so, is putting her friends and family at risk. Our MMC (Jin) is a charismatic, handsome prince and Astrea childhood friend, who even after book 1 is still hiding many secrets. Alongside other members of the royal household and Astrea’s friends/family, this group must investigate and defend themselves against users of this unknown shadow magic set on murder, destruction and seemingly ASTREA. (SIDE NOTE: don’t come here for shadow daddies, these guys are bad news).

My favour thing about this book is the world-building. I found very quickly that I could picture every scene in my mind and understand the context in which it and the characters were situated. The rivalry that exists between the nation’s political players is just as enticing as the relationships between our core characters and the settings are deliciously vibrant in their descriptions.

The only thing I docked half a star for is the round the houses way they go about finding out answers. While this makes the book far more realistic, it does add to the length. In many stories the problems almost solve themselves, and that is definitely not the case with this series. They have to work for it. That is not to say that this book is slow (it is an absolute page-turner!), but there are a number of blind alleys and assumptions that the characters have to work through before you get to the end and, even then, we are left with many unanswered questions. I am very glad to have two more books in this series ready to go.

This book will appeal to a very wide audience. From those who love investigative novels and the academic process, to lovers of action and adventures. We also have mountains of slow-burn goodness to keep the romance/romantasy lovers hooked into book 2.

I was delighted to receive e-ARC copies of this series in advance of the release of Book 3. I would highly recommend this series to those who love political intrigue, characters with complex motivations and unique magic systems.

I received an ARC copy of Under Darkened Skies from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

If you take some royal political drama, elemental magic, secret magic, sloooooow burn romance, and a bit of a mystery and mix it together, you get Under Darkened Skies. UDS is an upper YA debut novel from H.E. Bauman and although I tend to stay away from YA, I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. (The author has also promised us some spice in the future!)

Although the beginning of the novel felt like it started a bit slow, the pacing of the world building, and learning about the magical and political systems was perfect timed. Although there was a lot of information to try and grasp, it never felt overwhelming or like the author info dumped it on us.

Our FMC, Astrea, is a junior librarian who is also friends with the royal family, and the niece of the Royal Seer. She has a powerful magic that she ‘s been keeping hidden her whole life. Astrea does her best to fly under the radar so to speak, because her secret being leaked to the Emperor could be the end of the life she knows.

I was intrigued by Astrea from the very beginning. I love that she sees others feelings in colors. The world and emotions were all so vivid, that I felt truly immersed into the story even while I was waiting on the action to start. Once I got to about to 40-50% mark, things really started to take off.

Jin is one of the royal siblings, and former best friend to Astrea, but after leaving for the war several years ago, without even saying goodbye, Astrea tries to avoid him at all cost when he comes to town. (she does have her childish moments, but don’t we all?) But when the emperor assigns Jin and Astrea to work together on a special project, she has no choice but to finally begin addressing her hurt feelings and issues with Jin. (It takes her awhile to get to that point, but she eventually begins to let her guard down and open up to Jin)

The magic system and the relationship between Astrea and Jin were by far my favorite parts of the book, along with Cressida’s sass.

Book 1 was very character driven, but the plot was still there. Now that we know the characters, and have fallen in love with a few of them, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series plays out for Astrea and her friends. Book 1 did end on a slight cliff hanger, but thankfully nothing that completely ripped my heart out. If you’re looking for a fantasy novel set in the 1920s, with a vivid magical system, found family, and slow burn romance, I highly suggest checking out Under Darkened Skies.

** Audiobook Review: Under Darkened Skies**
Firstly thank you R&R Tours for having me on this book tour!

*About*
Introduces readers to Astrea, a junior librarian with a hidden talent—she is a Lightbringer. Her seemingly ordinary life in the Emperor of Helosia's library takes an extraordinary turn when she is assigned a special diplomatic project. This task propels her into a whirlwind of danger and intrigue, as malevolent forces threaten her world. Alongside her friends, Astrea confronts these perils, harnessing her unique abilities to combat the shadows encroaching on her realm.

*My Review*
The novel’s pacing is a little slow, but this deliberate approach allows for rich world-building and character development. The author excels in creating vivid, immersive settings that pull the reader deeper into the story. The magic woven throughout the narrative adds an enchanting layer, making Astreas' world feel both wondrous and perilous.

The MMC Jin 😍 & friend circle are well-crafted. Astrea, in particular, stands out as a compelling fierce FMC whose growth and resilience anchor the story. Her female companions also bring depth to the tale, each contributing uniquely to the group’s dynamic and the unfolding adventure to find out who the shadows are...

While the book concludes with unresolved mysteries & a HUGE cliffhanger on Jin & Astreas' relationship.. this only heightens anticipation for the sequel. The audio narrative leaves readers eager to discover where Astrea, Jin and her friends' journey will lead them next.

*Final Thoughts*
Overall, Under Darkened Skies is a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy, with a twisty and unpredictable storyline - It offers a captivating blend of magic, danger, and camaraderie, and sets the stage for an exciting continuation in the series.

If you're looking for spice or lots of romance straight away - this isn't the book to pick up! It's a super slow burn, heavy on the fantasy (almost a tad frustrating 😅) but what it does do, is make you want to pick up book 2 and for that the author has done a fantastic job! Where will this all lead..

This was such a cozy read! The amount of detail and consistency the author put into little details like the meanings of color was incredible. I felt like I could be a fly on the wall in the cafe with the amount of details put into creating the world. Even the color green, for example, was interesting to note how/when it was used in relation to emotions and people. The main character Az is a Lightbringer and as a result can read people’s auras and feel what they’re feeling. She is forced to keep it a secret to keep her safe though as mages are often recruited to the war front, and she would be as one of her powers is healing. It felt like a book I would have loved to dissect the themes, foreshadowing and duality in AP English in high school. The book is set in 1920s vibes with high tech technology. It has the best of both worlds in terms of fantasy, a little mystery and romance. Although elemental magic isn’t a new idea, the author wrote it in such a way to make it easily achievable in the world building. The main character Astrea/Az is a relatable female lead who deals with social anxiety. She is a thoughtful friend and a hard worker despite the challenges she faces she preserves. There is a hint of romance brewing that is more of a slow burn with potential. It’s more of a forced proximity leading toward something real and tangible. In terms of trigger/darker theme warnings: there is stalking, in which the female main character has nightmares, anxiety, paranoia, guilt as well as murders and people using magic for hidden/nefarious intentions. There are strong political themes as well of rebels Vs those in power and if the rebels or those in power are good or not. The point of view in which the story is told is super interesting as well as you get snippets here and there as to characters are thinking or overthinking whether it’s their thoughts or emotions! I can’t wait to see where the story goes for our Little Lightbringer!

Okay, I just listened to the audiobook now available on Audible- I love love this book.
The narrator on Audible is great. I did speed it up just a touch.
We have a solid world building of magic in a kingdom where our main character (Az) is hiding her magic because her uncle, and caretaker after her mother's death, has foreseen her death. They happen to be very close with the royal family who don't know that she has magic.
As the story progresses, we learn more about her relationships ( strong female friends), and her life now when the emperor gives her a special assignment that throws her life into a spiral with a prince who's been missing from her life for the past 8 years.... and she is very upset with him but she's been missing him.
her feelings, her wondering, her anxiety all of it is super relatable and makes her and their relationship feel very real. I think the emotion that the author evokes is just amazing. Obviously, in some parts, I think her feelings are a little over the top, but when you're anxious, that can be normal. Gen (? I'm not sure of spelling) feels like someone who made a mistake and does want to correct it, but also, you can tell he has that soldier blocking off of self persona added into the mix. I love how they do try to talk about what happened and they don't always talk about it cuz sometimes one of them needs to push it off and that's a very real human emotion not just like oh this is on the table so let's get this out of the way like it just feels all very personal and involved. Anyways, I love it. I'm super excited to see where it's going, definitely downloading the next book on Kindle.

Side note:
I happened to read it at the same time I was reading a Brandon Sanderson novel, so this was my audiobook, and this one hits really hard with getting the emotions right, and it had solid world-building, which was a perfect foil forme to Sanderson's not strong emotions/ strong world-building Somehow worked out for me because I loved both of these dearly at the same time lol

The slow burn and the found family had me in this one!
Astrea is a junior librarian, whose uncle is a seer for the emperor. He also tutored the emperor's children, and Astrea grew up close to the royal family as a result. The mc struggles with keeping secrets forced upon her by her uncle, who foresaw her death in one of his visions. Because of her secrets, she plays things safe, ignores her desires and tries to stay unnoticeable to others.
Astrea is a lightbringer, which is a healer and an empath in this 1920s inspired world. She see's other feelings as auras.
Astrea, Cressida and the emperors' two youngest children have become a close knit little family- their banter and teasing seems natural on the page. But it's this closeness that makes her friend, Jin's ghosting of her that's even more palpable. Prince Jin was enlisted in his father's secret force, he left without saying goodbye, leaving a huge hole in Astrea's heart. He's been gone for eight years, without a single word.
How is she ever going to move past this betrayal?
The 'Why' of this kept me enthralled, I just couldn't figure out why he would do this to Az! The main plot, without giving too much away...
Astrea is assigned a task by the emperor, and guess who is supposed to lead the project? Our favorite ghost! S vex What appeared as frivolous task dropped on them by the emperor, becomes more complicated with a string of mysterious murders and lurking shadow men. For some reason, they are after the lightbringer.
The slow burn in this! ) The will they or won't they was one of the best parts of this book!
I really enjoyed the maturity of Astrea's voice. She was a real person to me. She loves pancakes, the color purple and she doesn't like to wear trousers.

4.5 out of 5 –
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Under Darkened Skies, the outstanding debut novel by H. E. Bauman. My favorite part about UDS is that the characters are completely and utterly relatable. From their anxieties and fears to the way they handle stress, doubt, friendship, and love, these characters are believable. They felt real, and I empathized with them throughout the story.

I saw another reviewer commented that UDS felt like a cross between Shadow and Bone and The Legend of Korra, and I think that really nails the aesthetic of this book. The magic system is complex but well-thought-out and well-described. I never felt confused or lost about how the magic functioned. And the moments when magic was used during fight scenes were vivid and honestly pretty epic.

The plot is intriguing, with a mystery that builds on itself and seemingly low stakes that increase as the story goes on. It’s a little slow at the start, but it didn’t feel *too* slow. The characters and the mystery were definitely enough to carry me through until things start to escalate. I very occasionally wanted to dig deeper into certain conversations or some of Astrea’s inner thoughts, and one or two of the scenes felt like they ended just a tad too early. I just really wanted to know even more.

This story has a slow burn that was truly delightful. I’m in love with the two main characters and can’t wait to see what happens to them next. Astrea’s somewhat petty reactions to Varojin at the beginning of the book are entertaining and completely believable, and the way their relationship evolves over time was a pleasure to read.

The book has a satisfying ending that sets up book 2 beautifully, which is great because I need more!

I received an ARC of Under Darkened Skies in exchange for an honest review.

The FMC, Astrea works at the library, and has an ability to see people’s emotions in various colours (their aura). And well this is a secret, except to a select few. She’s the niece of a seer employed to the royal family, and the best friend to the princess. And when the Astrea is enlisted to work on an important project with Jin, one of the princes and her ex-best friend who’s been away at war… that’s when things get complicated.

In my opinion, the beginning of the novel moves too slow. And there was little tension to keep me interested. It was a grind to get past the first 7-10 chapters, but eventually the pace, excitement and tension picked up.

The unique magic system made the grind worth while to learn as I read.

And the slow burn relationship was relatable and enticing. I wanted to know more. I needed to know more!

Now, this is completely subjective, but I found some of the character’s names to close sounding, spelling, and many starting with the same letter. This made it difficult for me to keep track of some of the side characters.

However, the characters all felt real. Including the fact, Astrea works at a library and loves to read and loves book. While, loving to read/books can seem like a trope, because many authors love to make their MCs readers, it felt relatable and true to the character. Each interaction between every character had a purpose that pushed the plot forward. There wasn’t one point where I thought “this is pointless” or “this didn’t need to be here”.

Under Darkened Skies is a refreshing story in a fantastical world with urban and historical vibes all entwined to one, with a techno feel.

I can’t wait to read book two!

this is so fkn amazing

This book was perfect in every possible way. I can’t think of a single thing to change about it. No typos. No plot holes. Amazing characters. Just ABSOLUTELY PERFECTION!

Astrea is an amazing main character. She is relatable, anxious, and strong in the ways we wouldn’t normally recognize as such. She powers through but breaks down. She is scared. She wants to avoid all things painful but ends up facing them straight on anyway because she knows that’s the right thing to do. The way H.E. portrays her neurodivergence through both how she is as a person but also her magic is phenomenal. The way her anxiety and panic attacks are written is so vivid and believable. I also really enjoyed the demisexual representation in her, since I too, am on the ace spectrum. It was a nice bonus I didn’t expect.

The post-industrial world building is vast and so unique! It’s explained in detail but never in a way that’s confusing or boring. You really feel like you’re there when reading. The characters were equally thought out and literally E A C H one of them felt like a whole real person, even small side characters. They all had their own shit going on, their own stories. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that portrayed side characters as well as this one did.

I adored the romance. It had the slowest of burns, going from ex-best friends to friends to finally lovers. No spice in this installment, but if I’ve understood correctly, future books will have some.

The second half of the book had me on high alert the whole time, expecting the worst at every corner the characters took. And I loved every page of it.

If I didn’t make it clear already—GO READ THIS BOOK!

I loved the premise of this story!! Astrea is a young woman forced to hide her magical healing abilities from the Emperor, in order to avoid being conscripted into a age-old war, where, according to her uncle’s premonition, she’ll meet a tragic ending.
While working as a librarian, her life is turned upside down, when she’s sent on a diplomatic mission with her ex-best friend, Jin. After things go awry, they realize there is more at stake than just their assignment. As the two delve deeper into bigger mysteries, their undeniable attraction begins to grow, creating some delicious, heart-pounding, romantic tension.
There are some well crafted action scenes, and just enough world building and intricate magic to keep you invested. The writing is beautiful, & I enjoyed the pacing of the dialogue, as well as the interactions with all of the side characters. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes!

🎧As for the narration, @brittneylynnvo did an amazing job navigating seamlessly through the various roles. It was a beautiful performance, and I’ll definitely be doing a deep dive into her catalog.

I went into this book with high expectations and I was not disappointed. Slow burn to perfection some slow burns tend to be way too slow but this was the right amount of slow. This book is an enthralling tale of Astrea Sovna, a young Lightbringer, destined to die serving the Helosian government as a battlefield healer. But when her uncle, the court seer, has a vision of her death, Astrea is forbidden from revealing her powers. In her quiet role as a junior librarian, she is reassigned to a diplomatic project that pairs her with her ex-best friend, Prince Varojin Auris, a returned war hero looking for redemption.

The book has an excellent pacing, with twists and turns that keep the reader engaged throughout. The author's ability to craft a compelling story with well-rounded characters is impressive. Astrea and Varojin's relationship is nuanced, and their conversations are filled with the depth of years of shared history. The secondary characters are also well-developed, with each one contributing to the story's overall intrigue.

The world-building in "The Darkened Skies" is impeccable, with a well-realized setting that draws the reader into the story's action. The themes of loyalty, friendship, and self-discovery are woven seamlessly into the plot, creating a satisfying and emotionally resonant read. The story is well-crafted, with relatable characters, and a well-realized world that leaves the reader wanting more. Fans of fantasy and adventure will enjoy this book, and I highly recommend it.
