Whenever I explain to someone my interest in astrology I usually tell them I use it as a self-development tool. It's not a lie and I do, but honestly I am afraid of being judged because of my interest in astrology. I take astrology very seriously and a lot of people don't. I'm sure that in my chart there is something that points to this very issue lol.
Anyway, I really liked this book. I picked it up last night after taking a break from Tracy Mark's "The Astrology of Self-Discovery". While they are similar in some ways, Mark's book has some questions in it that made me take a deeper look into my family life and I really needed to recharge, but I still wanted to continue with my astrology studies.
I liked Ms. Cunningham's writing style. It's very personable and I felt as though she was speaking directly to me. In other words, I feel like she writes as she speaks. The book was divided into two sections and the chapters were of moderate length. It didn't really have many interpretations in it and when they were there they were scatted amongst the chapters.
Ms. Cunningham really placed emphasis on analyzing your own chart and learning about yourself (The title, after all, does have Self in it lol.) I really liked this approach. I understand the need for interpretations by others, but I find it more rewarding learning how to do it myself.
I am going to try out some of her reading suggestions. I was disappointed that there was no bibliography because she mentioned a lot of different books. There were, however, footnotes, which were somewhat useful.
I love this book! I stumbled upon it at a metaphysical shop used, and I am so happy I grabbed it. This book has some fresh (circa '76)thoughts on the planets, signs, and houses that shape our lives.
I love Donna Cunningham books. She also published a lot of articles for free over the years. She could say things like Sun pushes you out of comfort zone and Moon helps you settle and be comfortable again, and she'd use analogies like a cool powerful sports car that keeps breaking (great strong Sun, troubled Moon) vs a beaten up old comphy car that is slow but keeps going with very little maintenance (weak Sun, strong harmonious Moon) - I'm paraphrasing from memory but you get the drift. In this particular book she seems to summarize her system. She'd present various views and then zero in on her approach. Very very useful and well written. She was a great astrologer! Died in 2017 on her 75th birthday. Highly recommended.
