Re The Secret Mistress - Emma Darcy does a fast and furious second chance romance with a few speed highlights thrown in.
This one starts with the h's brother calling up the H in La Paz, Bolivia and asking him to use his many business contacts to get him a bus. We quickly learn that the H is from Argentina, but visiting La Paz for business and the h's brother is a Australian who organizes South American group tours.
The problem is that there is civil unrest in La Paz between the farmers and the military and the situation is very explosive. The people in the tour group want to leave, but all traveling has been suspended.
We also learn that two years earlier, the h and H were deeply in love and living in Argentina together. The H is seriously rich and as both his father and his older brother are dead, he is also the heir apparent to the family businesses.
The h and H were ripped apart when the h noticed that in the several months they were together, the H never took her out to socialize with his family and peers and never introduced her to his mother.
When the mother showed up at the h and H's apartment one day to invite the h to lunch, the h thought this was a welcoming gesture and went. To her horror and shock, the H's mother implied that the h was the H's seekrit mistress and then went on to introduce the h to the high society babe that the mother has slotted to be the H's wife.
The h believed the mother,(and her chosen handmaiden OW,) when she told the h that the H was already engaged. Then, when the h got home that night and thought she heard the H refusing to bring the h along to a family gathering, the h told the H she had enough of her 'Latin Lover' and went back to Australia the next day.
This threw the H in a maelstrom of fury and heartbreak for the next two years. The H was NOT engaged to anybody and only loved the h and wanted to escape the pressurizing manipulation tactics of his mother. Now the h is within his grasp again and he wants to vent some of his heartbreak on her body.
The H tells the h's brother that he needs to send the h over to his hotel to negotiate a deal for the bus. When the h arrives, the H tells her she has to spend the night with him or he won't help them out.
The h is still attracted to the H and when she finds out he is not married, she agrees. She is hoping they can rekindle their love for each other, but tho it gets very purple passiony, it is definitely not a loving reunion.
The H uses the h like a tart for hire and ED writes this extremely descriptively. Gradually the h realizes what the H is up to and as soon as she figures it out, the lurve club events are definitively over.
The H keeps his word and gets the bus, but the situation is so unstable that the H realizes he is going to have to drive it.
As they are getting ready to evacuate, the h tells the H what his mother did to break them up and the H realizes that if he wants his beloved h back, he is going to have to do a major recovery operation.
ED gives us a very thrilling escape from La Paz - they are stopped by a tank and the h has to throw herself over the H while her brother does some fast talking about all of them being Australian tourists. In a final dramatic moment before everybody escapes, the H has to jump the bus over a trench that the opposing forces dug to prevent anybody from leaving the area.
The H does this in true Sandra Bullock Style and then has to help the h's brother fix the wheel and axle that got stuck. After we are all safely on our way, the H asks the h if she wants a little justice for the heartbreak and pain that his mother has inflicted on them.
The h agrees and the H has plan, he wants to firmly remind his mother that he is tired of being forced into his older brother's shoes.
(There is a sad real world backstory where the H's older brother was caught up in the 1976-1983 Argentine military junta's 'disappearance' of 30,000 young men and women, most of them students and all of them captured, tortured and murdered on the suspicion of being dissidents.
The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo was started at that time. Mothers wearing white head coverings would gather in the Plaza and silently march two by two around the Plaza to protest the disappearance of their children, as any gatherings of more than four people were considered to be criminal actions.
To this day over 8000 people remain unaccounted for and the Mothers are still working today to keep the memory of the genocide alive and to track down the babies that were taken from the captured pregnant women -the mothers were murdered and the babies were given to military couples to raise.)
The H's brother's disappearance sent his widowed mother into hyper-controlling and dictatorial mold. She has refused to tolerate any interference with her quest to have enormous wealth and power and his mother has also decided that the H will be forced to marry the daughter of an equally wealthy family to increase her power base.
Since the H's whole life became a wasteland when the h ditched him, he sorta aimlessly went along with things, but now that he has another shot at happiness with the h, he is going to go full out madman and put the big time kibosh on his mother's plans.
His mother is hosting a big party in Buenos Aires, where the H actually lives. It is supposed to be to announce his engagement to the mother's chosen bride, but the H is furious that both his mother and his proposed fiancee manipulated and lied to the h to the extent that she felt she had no choice but to leave him to his fate.
The H asks the h to go to the big party with him and he gets her a fabulous red dress and a some fabulous jewelry. The h, who realizes that if she had just talked to the H before she left him two years earlier she might have been spared a lot of heartbreak, promises the H that she will support him no matter what.
The two of them storm the party, right as the H's mother is set to make the big engagement announcement. The H preempts his mother and gets his younger brother on his side and the malicious wanna be fiancee - whom the H has never had much to do with- is told she is a devious, manipulative cow right to her and her father's face.
Then the H proposes to the h in front on the entire upper echelon of Buenos Ares. The H deliberately gives the h the opportunity to publicly humiliate him to atone for his night of private h humiliation the night before.
The h isn't going to say 'NO' to the H tho, she still loves him madly and it has has only ever been him for her.
After a very romantic tango and a beautiful H declaration that he has never and will never want any other woman but her, the H and h make a start on forgiving the H's very tormented mother and we go to find our best feathered and flowered hats, cause ED is giving us a glorious wedding to attend.
The story ends with ED's favorite white wedding descriptions. The H's mother is really sorry that her grief led her to tyranny and happy to now welcome the h to the family. The H and h are happy and in love and declaring they will be together forever and ever for the Pink Sparkly Rosy Glowing True Love ED HEA.
This is a very fast book. The whole story takes place in two days and a three month wedding epilogue and ED does a really great job with such a compressed timeline. The whole escape from La Paz is very intense and the H's bid for redemption is truly excellent.
The H's mother's manipulations are not easily forgiven by the H either, tho the h intervenes quite nicely when she realizes how the H's mother losing her eldest son so horribly must have damaged the entire family in ways the h would have never had to think about.
The public comeuppance for the spiteful wanna be OW was well done too and the H's big declaration and their tango was truly romantic. The only really sad note was the all too real backstory behind the brother's death and for me, that was enough real world trauma to pull the overall energy of the story down.
This one is worth the read tho, even with the real world tragedy. The H and h were both nice people and their love was very believable. Give this one a go if you want an more unusual HP outing. ED packs a lot of plot and drama into a very small package that is very enjoyable to read if you run into it.

This one was an interesting read. The H and the h were separated due to treachery on the part of his family, which seemed to be supported by the fact that he'd kept her isolated from his life -- he was VERY possessive and wanted them to live in the bubble as long as possible. His possessiveness and her absolute misery result in him taking advantage of her two years later when they cross paths because she finds herself in a very dangerous situation and needs his help. He asks for one more night , and then treats her like a whore, and I mean, he really treats her like a whore. It's hard to explain why, exactly (good writing, I guess), but it's not an easy scene to read because of the h's dawning realization of what the H has done.
The H then honors his promise to help her and even risks his own life. During the course of honoring the promise, he finds out what has happened, and then becomes desperate to win her back and to destroy the people who separated them.
I absolutely cannot fault the intensity of his grovel and he definitely leaves himself open for her to destroy him if she wants revenge. I felt like things were back in balance, and I had no doubt in the HEA.
Also, and I RARELY feel like this, is that although they have been apart for two years and it is never addressed, the intensity of feeling on both of their parts leads me to conclude that both of them have been celibate since they were apart. Nobody else exists for either of these two and they have been walking around miserable for years, which is why everything has an operatic level of intensity whenever they interact.
The H then honors his promise to help her and even risks his own life. During the course of honoring the promise, he finds out what has happened, and then becomes desperate to win her back and to destroy the people who separated them.

Very good book. The hero is an Argentinian billionaire who was jilted by the heroine years ago. She told him he was her Latin lover for some fun but she wasn’t serious about them. Actually the heroine was a working girl and she was very much in love with him but since he never introduced her to his family or friends she didn’t know if he was serious about her. Then one day his mother invited her to their house and there, in a fabulous mansion, she had lunch with her and the hero’s fiancée. She was shattered when his mother told her the hero considered her his mistress so she left him and told him those cruel lies. Now the heroine is in a South American country and in danger and asks the hero to help her and a group of tourists that she and her friends are accompanying around the country. He accepts but asks her to have sex with him for one night. They have sex but the heroine after the first time is disgusted because he’s treating her as a sex toy and so refuses to be further humiliated. Anyway The hero helps her and the tourists to get out of danger, and in the same time they talk about what happened years before. He understands he still loves her and wants her back so he asks her to help him restore her pride with his mother. The hero is going to get engaged to the infamous woman who had lunch with the heroine and his mother.
So he goes to the party with the heroine as his date and asks her to marry in front of everyone.
He publicly rejects ow and tells his mother he doesn’t want to see her any more.
The heroine understands she misjudged the hero before and accepts his proposal.
This book was very cute, both characters suffered because of an evil mil and a bitchy ow. Ow with her virginal and submissive behavior was one of the worst ow ever. She was mean and awful. Mil was awful and meddling and I don’t like that the heroine was so ready to forgive her. A woman like that should be kept out of one’s life.
There was a deception but the heroine lack of trust caused their break up. The hero was hurt and suffered because he really loved her, and even if he was cruel with her when he asked her to have revenge sex with him, he stopped immediately after the first time and decided to solve their issues, which was good since he was the hurt party.
I loved this book, it was safe and with a nice amount of angst and I loved both characters. The heroine was horribly deceived but wasn’t a whiny child or a doormat, and the hero was really great when he understood they were both been deceived, he immediately tried to settle the matter and didn’t complain or sulk. He was all for the heroine and risked it all.
A real man for once.
So he goes to the party with the heroine as his date and asks her to marry in front of everyone.

This second-chance romance wasn't super emotional, but it still contained enough passion, angst, and drama to satisfy. And how about Luis' romantic marriage proposal to Shontelle? *Cue swooning.* The author avoided addressing whether they'd remained celibate while apart, but I like to think so considering their intense feelings for one another.
The happy ending occurred in about two days yet I found it believable since the reason for Shontelle dumping Luis a few years earlier was quickly revealed after they'd reunited. So after they cleared the air it was just a matter of Luis trying to amend for his callous treatment of Shontelle in the present, and for Shontelle to admit her part in their breakup. The external conflicts were addressed in rapid succession too.
The happy ending occurred in about two days yet I found it believable since the reason for Shontelle dumping Luis a few years earlier was quickly revealed after they'd reunited. So after they cleared the air it was just a matter of Luis trying to amend for his callous treatment of Shontelle in the present, and for Shontelle to admit her part in their breakup. The external conflicts were addressed in rapid succession too.

I've always had a bit of a love hate with Emma Darcy books. This one, however, is love all the way.
Shontelle left Luis two years ago when she found out via his mother and the woman he was supposedly marrying that she was just a cheap little affair while he filled in time before settling down with a woman of his own culture. She pretended he was just her Latin toyboy lover, thus humiliating him as she believed she had been humiliated. Before you call her TSTL, Luis has contributed to her feeling of being a dirty little secret by basically keeping her isolated from his family and friends.
Now Shontelle is back in South America with her brother's tour company and they are caught up in a violent altercation between the government and factions unhappy with their treatment. Their only hope is to get transport out of La Paz and the only person who can help is Luis Angel Martinez.
You can see what's coming can't you?
Vengeance is mine, sayeth Luis with an evil laugh. And a burgeoning erection. Yes gentle reader, he is going to have her back in his bed and he is going to make her pay in humiliation. He is so going to regret that decision.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel. Well you know how it goes. This time we have a heroic hero who despite despising his ex, after treating her like a cheap tart in revenge for her treating him like a Latino pool boy, he is going to personally risk his life to ensure her safety...and incidentally a whole busload of Aussi tourist. Yay Luis.
The events of this story take place over one weekend, but really, all that was needed, once they got past the evil laughter and revenge stuff, was to actually TALK about what happened with his control freak mother and his potential Latino bride of convenience. this was about a reunion story and happened over a period of 2 days. unfortunately it had no substance; no intense emotions involved. it was like the characters were more or less detached from what they were feeling! ok we were said how heartbroken or torn they felt but we did not really see it. they got separated due to a wicked mum and OW who had an eye on the main chance. it was all pretty ordinary!:S

Yet another attempt to present a stupid and stubborn heroine as independent. I truly don't know why romance authors insist on a lack of brains, a lack of communication, and a preference for the words of strangers over the actions of someone close….

Second chance story for a couple who was maliciously separated by evil mother and wanna be fiancée. Another instance where had the couple communicated even once before heroine decided to do a runner, would have resolved everything.

The horrible way the hero used the heroine sexually at the beginning of the story, ruined the rest for me. Hero agrees to provide a tour bus to the hero's brother to evacuate a group of tourists from a military coup in Bolivia - but only if heroine has sex with him. Seems she dumped him two years before and he needs "revenge."
Hero's mother had told heroine the hero was engaged and would never marry her. Heroine bought it hook line and sinker and said things she didn't mean when she dumped him. Hero has been in a bad mood ever since.
Hero is not repentant for the selfish/angry way he used the heroine's body for his revenge - even after she locks herself in the bathroom. I think the author tried to redeem him by having him risk his life to help the tourists escape. (He sped the bus over a trench and landed safely - just like the movie Speed!) But that doesn't make him romance hero material in my book.
The public showdown with his mother at his "engagement" party was also supposed to show his commitment to the heroine, but it just looked like posturing.
Not a fan of this hero and I didn't believe he had changed a bit.

I really enjoyed reading this story. Their love was beautiful and powerful. I especially loved how Shontelle's strength allowed Luis to gain his freedom and take control of his life. I really believed in their HEA.

Could be better
Started out great lots of hot passion but became way to wordy. The book could have been wrapped up in half the time. I skipped over a lot of the inner dialogue because it all seemed the same.
