Rate this book
POETThengivemebackthattimeofpleasures,WhileyetinjoyousgrowthIsang,—When,likeafount,thecrowdingmeasuresUninterruptedgushedandsprang!Thenbrightmistveiledtheworldbeforeme,Inopeningbudsamarvelwoke,AsIthethousandblossomsbroke,Whicheveryvalleyrichlyboreme!Inothinghad,andyetenoughforyouth—JoyinIllusion,ardentthirstforTruth.Give,unrestrained,theoldemotion,Theblissthattouchedthevergeofpain,ThestrengthofHate,Love'sdeepdevotion,—O,givemebackmyyouthagain!……

3,5 - I had a hard time to follow the ideas in archaic English. Although appreciating the ordeal in translation and attempt to use the same poetical approach as the original, I do not feel it was to the benefit of the reader. Languages are close enough to do so, but the overall understanding is limited. The original is already very dated, one has to have good overview of the contemporary social and historical/political context. In addition only the 1st part of the drama is translated in this particular edition. I have to say that that part is more interesting to me. The second part of this edition is instead filled with another Goethe's great works "The Sorrows of Young Werther", but I have not finished that one yet.
I will give it a try in Czech and hope i will be better than the english translation.
