Brendan January masterfully weaves the history of President George Washington's life and the early history of the United States of America together in his book, "George Washing: America's 1st President." By telling the reader about his family background and his upbringing, he gives insight into the character traits that made him the best choice for the first President of his beloved United States of America. The author chronicles events that led young George Washington from his humble home on a tobacco plantation in Virginia near the Potomac River to President George Washington in his final home, Mt. Vernon. The journey between his birth and his death is, indeed, the early history of the United States of America.

"George Washington: America's 1st President" is an excellent resource for students fifth grade to adults. Only 94 pages long, it is written at a level that is easy to understand; contains sketches and photographs that add visual understanding; and moves through history quickly so as not to lose the interest of young readers. With "Fast Facts" insets throughout the text, a timeline of President Washington's life and a pictorial timeline of the Presidents of the United States, this book serves as a valuable reference. I highly recommend this book for all fifth grade classrooms (considering that is the grade that focuses on American History and Government), and for all school libraries.

I love this series! It is that wonderful step between the simple introduction books on getting to know a bit about our nation’s presidents, and those massively thick biographies that would intimidate most adults. These books are only about 100 pages, with lots of beautiful pictures and political cartoons, but extremely,/i> informative, containing plenty of information for students middle school level and up to use for research. Any school library would be remiss by not having this collection on their shelves.
