A Featured Selection of the Children's Book-of-the-Month!
In this new collection of international folk tales, storyteller Bob Hartman blends familiar stories with little-known tales. Each story has been chosen for its integrity and for its ability to encourage and inspire children who are learning to understand the world around them. It is a captivating anthology that reflects the storyteller’s humor and joy of life, both of which are echoed in Susie Poole’s lively watercolor illustrations.
MW 8/10/22
Brief stories and colorful illustrations provide insights into lands around the world. While the book leans European, the stories are arranged such that one doesn't feel too bogged down in one place. A delightful bedtime read that remains a cherished part of our home library, and complements Stories from Around the World.

Olen lapsele lugenud mitmeid muinasjutte.
This is a really fun collection of stories; our family especially loved the rabbit and tiger stories that occur throughout the book. The main thing that I didn't particularly like was girls being given away without any choice, like a prize, in a couple of the stories, so I very slightly modified a few endings when reading to my kids. (There are varying views on censorship, but I don't want my daughter receiving the message that she's an object rather than a being capable of making her own decisions, and she's only two so we can't have more in-depth conversations about the messaging yet. Might be nit-picking to some but it's important to me that she hears of girls being active in stories.)
But overall, it's a really imaginative and fun set of stories, and my kids loved listening to them.
These stories can be very strange, but I think it is in part the strangeness of them that holds kids attention. I have trouble getting my 4 year old to listen to stories and she is really engaged in this book. The illustrations are fun and combined with the way the story is spun together it seems to be a good fit for my oldest right now. Her 2 year old sister enjoys it too, but she lets me read more to begin with.
Wonderful! There are 40 or so folk tales in this storybook, from all over the world. It took us a long time to get through it, but it was worth it! There's wisdom to learn from each story, but they also just make fun read alouds. This was a great way to get my 2 year old used to sitting still and listening to a story for a little longer than a picture book. Very fun!
I did not expect to like this book. Surprise! The stories are charming, and most of them were new to me. The 4 and 7 year olds both enjoyed it immensely. I don’t love the illustrations and wish they listed the country the story was from on the page of the story rather than just in the table of contents.
This is a well-done collection of folktales from around the world with pleasant cartoon style pictures. There were some Aesop's fables, some Grimms, just-so stories, and other tales I'd never heard before. My personal favorite is the story of the peacock. My kids always looked forward to reading these stories, and they were good for a quick read.
The strength of this book is the breadth of the stories - from a wide variety of countries and cultures. Hartman knows how to tell stories, and although some of them seem to be less his own style of writing, all are lively and vivid.
The genre of folk tales has its own tropes, which can make endings predictable: e.g. events occurring in threes, and protagonists being unconsciously kind to a disguised powerful character.
I liked the African stories which clearly are cousins of Uncle Remus's fables. The best ones of all are the profound The Big Wave, the Christological The Generous Bird and the comical The Contented Priest
This is a great collection of tales from around the world for young children! The writing style flows very well and is easy to read and to understand. My five year old son really enjoyed this.
Definitely a favorite from this sonlight curriculum list. The illustrations are beautiful, the stories are fun and my kids went crazy over the lion and the rabbit tales. This one is a keeper.
Great book for a collection of fairy/folk tales. The illustrations are bright and enjoyable. We really enjoy the Rabbit and Tiger stories. Really nice for bedtimes or other storytimes.
