The dead have no respect for anyone trying to have a life.
Portia Mahaffey is the only woman in her family without a psychic “gift”—and she likes it that way. After a concussion, she discovers her latent ability to see ghosts, including a murdered girl. Corinne wants Portia to convince the police that her death was no accident; she will haunt Portia until she agrees. Reluctantly, Portia uses her new gift and some old-fashioned detection to track down clues.
Seeing the dead is just the beginning as Portia discovers hungry demons, mercenary shadow beings, vengeful poltergeists and a murderer willing to make a ghost out of her. Who knew hanging with the dead could be so hazardous to the living?
Contains mild sexual escapades, ghosts, demons, and flatulent pugs
This book was amazingly witty and engaging. I really hope there's a next in the series, because I haven't gotten enough of the Mahaffeys. If you're looking for something with excellent characterization, dialogue, an intriguing plot, and just enough ghostly encounters to make you wonder if it just got cold in here, this is definitely the book for you. One of my favorite reads of 2011.
This was my first paranormal/urban fantasy novel. Portia Mahaffey always liked that she was the only woman in her family without a psychic 'gift'. But a concussion awakens her latent ability to see ghosts. And one of those ghosts is prepared to haunt her until Portia agrees to convince the police her death was no accident.
With no choice but to help Corinne, Portia reluctantly uses her new gift and some good old-fashioned detection to track down the truth.
Seeing the dead is just the beginning. Portia's world becomes filled with hungry demons, mercenary shadow beings, vengeful poltergeists…and one very alive murderer willing rank her among the dead.
Who knew hanging with the dead could be so hazardous to the living?
Warning: contains mild sexual escapades, ghosts, demons, and flatulent pugs
Can I up the stars & give this a ten? I totally loved this book! In fact, if there isn't a part 2, I will have to hunt Marguerite down & hurt her!! I didn't know what to expect at all. I bought this for the author name I knew - not the book content. (I'm not a back cover reader) I was curious to see where the book would go when Portia began to see "dead people". You could not love this character any more!! I recommend this to everyone whether you're into paranormal or not. It was a first for me and I hope she didn't spoil me for other "ghost" reads. This was so well done I have to squee - Great Job!!!
