The tiger has always evoked awe, fear, and fascination. 10 Days in the Tiger Fortress creates an engrossing, unforgettable portrait of this magnificent creature, featuring many images of tigers in the wild never before captured on film. The book is as much about the rich and vibrant habitat that makes Ranthambhore one of the finest places to watch wild tigers up close, as about a man who over the years has developed a special intimacy with the tiger.
Valmik Thapar, after thirty-three years of tiger-watching, finds himself in Ranthambhore once again where he confesses spending his finest ten-day stretch ever. Tigers reigning over lakes, forts, ruins, chhatris, and Ranthambhore's famous 600-700-year-old banyan tree - the more than 200 color photographs bring to life every incident that takes place as the author tracks six tigers in the course of ten days. Together, they create a visual continuity perhaps experienced only in motion pictures.
Valmik Thapar was an Indian naturalist, conservationist and writer. He was the author of 14 books and several articles, and was the producer of a range of programmes for television. He was one of India's most respected wildlife experts and conservationists, having produced and narrated documentaries on India's natural habitat for such media as the BBC, Animal Planet, Discovery and National Geographic.
This is a delightful book about the author's adventures in India's Ranthambhore national park in Rajasthan in the summer of 2008. Thapar, a noted wildlife conservationist, shares his excitement and thrill at seeing the various tigers he comes across on his 10-day stay at the park. It's pretty exciting to read about his encounters with the striped beauties and his description of the magical forest. You almost feel as if you are right there with the author, watching the many tigers with bated breath alongside him.
It's written with simplicity but evokes plenty of wonder in the reader's imagination. The book is also filled with magnificent photographs on every page, which I simply couldn't stop gaping at. Highly recommended if you are a tiger and wildlife lover.
