It's solid. Most of this book will be old info for anyone who has done more than a basic installation in D6. It appears that new content was written using an _alpha_ release of D7, and most of the book is filled with screenshots that could arguably be called out for padding the book's thickness to give it a sense of depth not otherwise present, but it's a handy quick reference for those who are new to the Drupal platform.
Not great, not bad, just average. And that's fine.
Incredible difference in tone from his previous edition about Drupal 4, driven by the fact that using Drupal now only requires code if you really like that sort of thing. Even Mercer keeps the code to the closing more advanced chapters. I didn't learn much, but then I am very au fait with Drupal 7 and I'm glad I never tried to use Drupal 4. It has been fascinating reading Mercer's two editions of his Drupal guide on the same day.
